Socialism a viable option for Malaysia, says academic
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 09:36 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is seeing many social problems – rising food prices, a widening income gap, home ownership issues and the lack of basic minimum wages.

And the answer to all these problems could be socialism, says an academic.

Universiti Malaya’s Shaharuddin Maaruf says the many problems have made socialism a relevant and viable alternative political and economic system for the country.

Speaking at a forum titled “Islam, Capitalism and Socialism” today, Shaharuddin, a senior research fellow at UM’s sociocultural department, said socialism emphasised the public, or shared ownership of resources and means of production.

A socialist system, he said, would not allow a hike in food prices as public ownership of food production and distribution would not be as affected by inflation as privately-owned businesses.

“Socialism believes in the intervention in society’s issues, in contrast to a capitalist system,” he said.

“Contrary to capitalism, socialism does believe in a certain amount of intervention. It does not leave everything to market forces but advocates for planning amongst all related parties,” he added.

Why is PAS silent about the recent floods?
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 07:16 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

In 2014, when Kelantan experienced one of its worst floods in living memory, the MP for Pasir Mas, PAS’ Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz said, “The floods remind Muslims to return to Allah and to avoid His wrath. It justifies the Kelantan government’s steadfastness in implementing the hudud.”

When Penang and Kedah were hit by the tail end of tropical storm Damrey and the island experienced its heaviest rainfall since records began, many areas were flooded and seven people died.

The erstwhile deputy prime minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said: “What happened is a sign from God that this is the best time for us to retake the Penang government.”

A few months ago, mudslides and flash floods wreaked havoc in Gunung Jerai, Kedah. Energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan told Parliament that the disaster was an act of God. He denied allegations of illegal logging in the area.

The seemingly religious do like to blame God for a lot of things.

Chinese city of Xian sees Covid cases rise as it enters third day of lockdown
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 06:07 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 3500.jpg?width=620&quality=45&auto=forma...1a3aadfca2]

The Chinese city of Xian has reported an increase in daily Covid-19 infections and local companies have curtailed activity as the country’s latest hotspot entered its third day of lockdown.

Xian, home to 13 million people, detected 75 domestically transmitted cases with confirmed symptoms on Friday, its highest daily count of the year and reversing the previous day’s decline, official data showed on Saturday.

China as a whole reported 140 new confirmed coronavirus cases for Friday, an increase of 62% from 87 cases the day before, its health authority said on Saturday. Of the new infections, 87 were locally transmitted, compared with 55 a day earlier.

Most of the new local cases were in the north-western province of Shaanxi, where Xian is the main city.

Xian’s locally transmitted symptomatic cases, at 330 for the period between 9 December and 24 December, are few compared with outbreaks in many other countries, but the city has imposed heavy-handed measures in line with Beijing’s policy to contain local transmission as quickly as possible.

Residents are banned from leaving the city, home to the world-famous Terracotta Army archaeological find, without clearance from employers or local authorities and households can send only one person to shop for necessities every two days. Other family members may not leave home unless they have essential jobs or urgent matters approved by employers or communities.

Past, present and future: The evolution of China's incredible high-speed rail network
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 05:43 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam...-train.jpg]

(CNN) — At the beginning of the 21st century China had no high-speed railways.

Slow and often uncomfortable trains plodded across this vast country, with low average speeds making journeys such as Shanghai-Beijing a test of travel endurance.

Today, it's a completely different picture. The world's most populous nation has -- by some distance -- the world's largest network of high-speed railways.

No fewer than 37,900 kilometers (about 23,500 miles) of lines crisscross the country, linking all of its major mega-city clusters, and all have been completed since 2008.

Half of that total has been completed in the last five years alone, with a further 3,700 kilometers due to open in the coming months of 2021.

The network is expected to double in length again, to 70,000 kilometers, by 2035.

With maximum speeds of 350 kph (217 mph) on many lines, intercity travel has been transformed and the dominance of airlines has been broken on the busiest routes.

By 2020, 75% of Chinese cities with a population of 500,000 or more had a high-speed rail ink.

Spain, which has Europe's most extensive high-speed network and occupies second place in the global league table, is a minnow in comparison with just over 2,000 miles of dedicated lines built for operation at over 250 kph.

In contrast, the UK currently has just 107 kilometers while the United States has only one rail route that (just about) qualifies for high-speed status -- Amtrak's North East Corridor, where Acela trains currently top out at 240 kph on expensively rebuilt sections of existing line shared with commuter and freight trains.

‘Mind your own forced labor problem’: Xinjiang regional govt refutes US Uygur bill
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 05:32 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 9b53d740-a40d-45ba-b3f8-4d7628ef1990.jpeg]

China's Xinjiang regional government on Saturday called the US signing of the so-called Uygur forced labor prevention act as an open interference in China's internal affairs with a purpose to contain China. The regional government also said it shows the US bullying logic and revival of a Cold War mentality.

Xu Guixiang, the Xinjiang regional government spokesperson, made the remarks at a press conference held on Saturday in Beijing, which came closely after US President Joe Biden signed a legislation which bans products made in China's Xinjiang, citing "oppression" of the Uygurs and other minorities.

On Friday, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress also said that China will take firm and strong countermeasures if the US insists on acting arbitrarily.

Xu told the media that the US bill seriously distorted the actual situation in Xinjiang. The region has been earnestly implementing relevant laws in the region and strictly forbid any forced labor.

Devastating floods reveal multiple systemic failures – Malaysian Bar
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 04:17 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20122021_-_ATM_rescue_mission_Banjir_Flo...F_-_66.jpg]

THE Malaysian Bar extends its deepest sympathy to those who have been affected by the floods that have occurred over the past week.

At the time of writing this press release, 37 individuals have perished, with 10 still missing and tens of thousands have been displaced following the recent floods, which have been described as the worst floods our country has experienced since 1971.

There have been numerous reported incidents of motorists stranded in their cars and flood victims being left without any assistance.

Many were left to fend for themselves just to survive the floods, while in many other instances, the Malaysian public themselves had to step in to help one another. These reports are distressing and disheartening, and immediate action must be taken to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.

The Malaysian Bar urgently calls for the strengthening and democratisation of legal accountability as a long-term solution to the myriad of weaknesses and gaps in our systems of governance.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had admitted to shortcomings in our country’s flood management. The government of Malaysia has long been aware of, and ostensibly preparing for, the risks of extreme weather and floods posed by climate change and unsustainable development.

Warisan denies working with Umno to topple GRS as Sabah govt
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 04:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Awang_Ahmad_Sah_Awang_Sahari-warisan-BERNAMA.jpg]

KOTA KINABALU – Warisan has rubbished claims that it is plotting with Umno to remove the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition as Sabah’s government.

Party information chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Awang Sahari stressed in a statement today that Warisan has never negotiated or discussed collaborating with any party, including Umno.

“Warisan is an opposition party focused on fighting for the interests of the people in Sabah and Malaysia. We put the government’s function on the right track, ensure that Malaysia Agreement 1963’s claims are fulfilled, and eradicate corruption.

“Warisan is committed to these fights and will work hard so that the people understand and support us,” he said.

Awang said that there have been recent claims by bloggers and political analysts that the party is planning to work with Umno to oust the current GRS Sabah government.

GRS, which comprises Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional, and Parti Bersatu Sabah, now seems to have a fragile relationship, after Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said that the party is likely to go against Bersatu for federal seats in the next general election.

Bung said he will follow the decision of central Umno, which went against Bersatu in the Melaka election in November. – The Vibes, December 25, 2021.

Three reasons the IMF is worried about cryptocurrencies
Posted by: superadmin - 12-25-2021, 02:21 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • One of the problems that the IMF highlighted was that many of the entities trading these assets “lack strong operational, governance, and risk practices.”
  • The Fund has said that consumers are at risk.
  • Furthermore, crypto assets “can open unwanted doors for money laundering, as well as terrorist financing,” the Fund said.
[Image: 106962967-1634709558798-gettyimages-1235...=740&h=416]

The International Monetary Fund is concerned about cryptocurrencies, particularly because the nascent market is growing at such a significant pace and regulation is not following suit.

The total market value of all crypto assets surpassed $2 trillion in September this year — representing a 10-fold jump from levels seen at the start of 2020, data collected by the IMF shows.

Evan Papageorgiou, a deputy division chief at the IMF, told CNBC in October that “the crypto ecosystem has grown significantly … The process shows remarkable resilience but there have also been some interesting stress tests.”

One of the problems that the IMF has highlighted is that many of the people and financial institutions trading these assets “lack strong operational, governance, and risk practices.”

Govt’s incompetency takes its toll on citizens – Universiti Malaya Students’ Union
Posted by: superadmin - 12-24-2021, 12:43 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 21122021_-_KUL_-_Taman_Seri_Muda_flood_-_Sairien-05.JPG]

THE student bodies which have endorsed this statement are extremely upset and disappointed with the fact that students and the general Malaysian populace have been left behind by the government with little to no aid when affected by one of Malaysia’s worst floods in years.

We duly note that on December 19, the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) had “activated the Flood Operations Room to assist IPT students and staff” via coordination of the distribution of assistance to those affected. However, reality seems to suggest that such initiatives were slow to be mobilised as there seems to be a lack of material aid from the said initiative.

What further agitated the students was that the MoHE failed to take prompt measures beforehand to announce a cooldown period for the IPTs in light of this grave situation. This cooldown period is crucial for those affected to recover their electricity, WiFi connection, emotional well-being as well as returning to a conducive study environment before resuming their studies so that they will not be left behind in their academic (endeavours) in the already challenging online distance learning environment.
