Fix weaknesses in handling disasters, not delete critical tweets: govt told
Posted by: superadmin - 12-24-2021, 12:41 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Prominent lawyer Syahredzan Johan has panned the government for forcing netizens to delete Twitter posts which are critical of the government’s handling in one of the country’s worst flood disasters in living memory.

Instead, Syahredzan said Putrajaya should reflect and fix its weaknesses in disaster preparedness to prevent the same incident from recurring.

“It is obvious that the government is not pleased with the people’s criticism of the way they dealt with the floods, so much so that they acted to delete those tweets.

“Although Twitter has rejected the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (remove) request, MCMC’s act (of asking for the tweets to be taken down) must be condemned.

“MCMC is still using the same playbook as the previous Barisan Nasional government, that is, suppressing government critics,” the activist said.

Nicol David eyes showcasing Penang globally as state’s new tourism ambassador
Posted by: superadmin - 12-24-2021, 12:37 PM - Forum: Travels - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN – Retired squash queen Datuk Nicol David has decided to emulate her Penang hometown luminary Datuk Lee Chong Wei by becoming a tourism ambassador.

While Chong Wei, who grew up in Bukit Mertajam, decided to help Sabah, Nicol has returned to Penang to become the state’s tourism ambassador for 2022.

The duo’s presence is expected to further boost tourism, especially with the key economic sector having just emerged from months of lockdowns due to Covid-19.

Nicol, 37, told journalists here that she was grateful to be appointed as the Penang Tourism Ambassador, as it would enable her to showcase her hometown globally.

“This is such a huge honour for me because Penang is home to me. This is where I belong and where I grew up.

“Penang has so much to offer; the food (of course), the heritage and the beautiful nature. It has been a dream of mine to contribute back to my state in some way,” she said at a ceremony to mark her appointment yesterday.

Accept gurdwara food with gratitude, Muslims told
Posted by: superadmin - 12-24-2021, 12:29 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A sociologist has denounced Muslims who question the halal status of vegetarian food offered by the Sikh community to flood victims.

“Malaysians must reject and condemn such ingratitude and insolence,” said Syed Farid Alatas of the National University of Singapore.

He also said such an attitude was “irreligious and cruel”.

“It may cause confusion among some flood victims who are inclined to accept food aid prepared or given by Sikhs,” he told FMT.

Some gurdwaras in Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya have been providing free vegetarian food to those affected by floods over the weekend.

Shafie slams bungling leaders jostling for posts and projects

KOTA KINABALU: Warisan president Shafie Apdal has slammed the disappointing relief efforts by the government in the wake of the massive floods in the Peninsula, saying this was because it lacked leadership and misplaced its priorities.

The former chief minister said the people had to help each other because of the late response and lack of coordination by government agencies, for instance in Selangor.

“Why did this happen? Because of the (lack of) leadership and lack of focus,” he said, during the Unity Show programme aired live on Facebook last night.

Three new studies suggest omicron has lower hospitalization risk
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 11:24 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Three new studies suggest omicron has lower hospitalization risk and is milder than other variants
  • “The current studies indicate something really good,” Ralf Reintjes, professor of epidemiology at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, told CNBC Thursday.
  • Research from South Africa suggests that people infected with omicron are 80% less likely to be admitted to hospital than if they contract other strains.
  • The authors of the study cautioned that this may be in part due to higher immunity among the population, either as a result of previous infection and/or vaccination.

The omicron Covid variant is less likely to result in hospitalization than earlier strains and appears to be milder in comparison, according to early data released this week.

Data from South Africa, England and Scotland indicate that people infected with omicron are significantly less likely to be admitted to hospital than if they contract other strains, and the latter study further emphasized the importance of getting a booster shot .

On Tuesday, a new study from South Africa showed that people infected with omicron are 80% less likely to be admitted to hospital when compared to other strains. The authors of the study, which has not been peer reviewed, cautioned that this may be in part due to higher immunity among the population, either as a result of previous infection and/or vaccination.

WSJ’s naïve smear won’t make China surrender to virus as US does
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 10:41 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 2f8354a5-a220-4768-9f2e-f19b91b73b5a.jpeg]

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published an article on Wednesday entitled "The Olympics Are Coming to China. So Is Omicron." It seemingly portrays a scenario where the Omicron variant is wreaking havoc in China. Throughout the article lies an ignoble wish that China surrender to the Omicron variant. However, China's effective measures won't turn ineffective under such a naïve smear. Neither will the US' ugly COVID-19 fight become lauded when China sees only a small scale of new infections.

When the Delta variant raged around the world, China managed to put it under control in a short time. It will be a similar story for Omicron within China's borders. But how has the US performed? Even US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's anti-China trip was cut short because of US' inability to fight the virus effectively.

The idea that China will successfully host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, despite the Omicron virus, gnaws at the heart of some American elites. But the US, with "the most resilience" against the COVID-19, had better think about how to survive this most recent wave.

US govt. imposes 'political persecution' on scientists in the name of 'China Initiati
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 10:38 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The US government has persecuted scientists who have cooperated or conducted exchanges with China in the name of the "China Initiative" since the term of former President Donald Trump, with a Harvard University professor being the latest to be convicted on Wednesday for "making false statements to authorities," but not "espionage or theft of intellectual property."

Washington is weakening its own soft power and hard power by spreading fear and a sinophobic atmosphere in the field of science and academic research, and now the situation is even worse than the Cold War era of McCarthyism, said experts.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that a federal court in Boston found Charles Lieber, a renowned nanoscientist and former chairman of Harvard's chemistry department, guilty of "making false statements to authorities, filing false tax returns and failing to report a Chinese bank account."

5G industry disruptor exposes ugly side of telcos – Zainul Arifin
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 10:20 PM - Forum: Telco Service Discussions - Replies (1)

[Image: 29102021-KUL-Digital_Nasional-Alif_Omar-01_dnb.jpg]

WHY are some politicians siding with rich telecommunication companies (telcos) over the interest of the people in the national 5G debate?

Has the telcos lobby gotten hold of them, or are they using the 5G plan as another political ammo to get at the government by painting a spectre of an impending scandal? I believe it is true on both counts.

The previous government set up government company Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) to build a nationwide 5G infrastructure, instead of having telcos do it. The major telcos are not too happy and are withholding support – and reports suggest they are lobbying for an alternative network.

They are said to be waging war against DNB and their lobby seems strong, concerted, and has convinced some big guns – politicians, non-governmental organisations, the media, etc – to be on board.

DNB is to be a single wholesale network (SWN) that will sell 5G access to telcos, or whomever that wants it. The idea is that the SWN will free telcos from having to invest and duplicate resources, and instead concentrate on services to be offered to customers.

The 5G is meant to provide almost quantum leap-like technological development – for instance, 2G wowed us with the novelty of sending text messages or SMS over the phone, while the 8-year-old 4G (yawn) allows extensive internet functionalities, including streaming.

Shahidan may face disciplinary action over party breach
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 10:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Shahidan Kassim has been hauled up by the Umno disciplinary board following allegations of him violating party discipline and etiquette.

Shahidan, who is Arau Umno division chief, arrived at the party headquarters, Menara Datuk Onn, in Kuala Lumpur at about 2.45pm today to meet with the board, according to Sinar Harian.

Trouble had been brewing for Shahidan, who is Arau MP and federal territories minister, when he called for Umno to form an alliance with other Malay-based parties.

Arau Umno Youth had earlier called for action to be taken against Shahidan, claiming that the stance he took was against the party’s decision to not work with Bersatu. Its chief, Syed Atif Syed Abu Bakar, had sent a complaint letter to party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan over the alleged breach of party discipline.

According to Sinar Harian, Shahidan had allowed the display of the Bersatu flag along with the Umno flag at the launch of the division meeting.
