PM must end silence over claims against MACC chief, says Kit Siang
Posted by: superadmin - 12-28-2021, 09:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said the prime minister must end his two-month “conspiracy of silence” surrounding the allegations against MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki and his alleged extensive ownership of corporate stock.

This came following the resignation of economist Edmund Terence Gomez as a member of a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission panel after it failed to discuss reports implicating the top leaders at the anti-graft agency.

Lim, the Iskandar Puteri MP, also called for a parliamentary select committee on corruption and abuses/wastage of public funds to conduct an investigation into the allegations against Azam.

Lesson of Soviet Union’s collapse ‘helps China develop socialism successfully’
Posted by: superadmin - 12-27-2021, 07:04 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

 [Image: 19ad7ba0-a97e-423d-b6e3-c9efbbeda378.jpeg]

The former socialist superpower the Soviet Union (USSR) collapsed on December 25, 1991, while China, a major power which chose the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics different from that of the USSR, has become the biggest economy on a purchasing power parity basis. It is also the most powerful and successful socialist country en route to realize modernization and industrialization without choosing the Western capitalist model, as well as "the most important strategic competitor" in the eyes of the US.

Chinese people hold mixed feelings over the collapse 30 years ago, as they hold sympathy toward Russian people who consequently suffered a series of tragedies, but they also find that the collapse of the red giant is a significantly valuable lesson for China to keep developing and improving socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Just as discussions are rife among observers and scholars worldwide, there has been much debate appraising the legacy of the collapse of the USSR from Chinese experts, commentators and ordinary people on Chinese media and social media platforms in recent days, but their voices are quite different from the Western ones.

Portraying the US as the "victor" of the Cold War, many media and scholars from the US and other Western countries are at pains to attribute the collapse of the USSR to its socialist path, claiming that its choice caused mistakes like military expansion, Great-Power chauvinism and failed economic reform.

Inclusive action necessary for effective disaster relief and recovery efforts – William Leong

I SUPPORT the approach by the Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari not to debate the role and functions of the state National Security Council (NSC) chairman. There are no better answers to his critics than effective action and tangible results.

Now is not the time for pointing fingers as to who is at fault for the poor response to rescue and relief efforts during the floods. The focus for now must be to ensure disaster relief and recovery efforts save lives, livelihoods, properties and businesses.

I commend the menteri besar for including in the Selangor Disaster Management Committee representatives from the Civil Defence Force, the NSC, the Royal Malaysian Police, the Social Welfare Department, the Selangor Health Department, the Irrigation and Drainage Department, the Meteorological Department, and other agencies.

It is salutary that the menteri besar has also included state opposition leader Datuk Rizam Ismail in the committee.

These are positive decisions. To further improve the disaster relief and disaster recovery framework, I urge the menteri besar to consider the following additional measures.

Inclusive relief and recovery process
Successful recovery includes the ability of individuals and families to rebound from their losses in a manner that sustains their physical, emotional, social and economic well-being. Therefore, care must be taken by all agencies to assure that all actions do not exclude groups of people based on race, gender, religion or disability.

PH fears another defeat if Johor holds polls, says Umno man
Posted by: superadmin - 12-27-2021, 06:32 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan does not agree to holding state elections in Johor because it fears another defeat, said Umno Supreme Council member Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

In a Facebook post, he said PH lost both the Melaka and Sarawak elections held recently and “they are now worried about losing in Johor, too”.

Barisan Nasional holds a one-seat majority in the Johor state assembly after the death of Kempas assemblyman Osman Sapian on Dec 21.

Shamsul, who is also the Lenggong MP, said whatever the situation, his party would focus on resolving the current flood crisis affecting the people.

In a joint statement yesterday, Johor PH leaders Aminolhuda Hassan (Amanah), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PKR) and Liew Chin Tong (DAP) said they were opposed to any power struggle, and were committed to easing the burden of the people affected by the floods.

They said all efforts and funds should be channelled towards helping the people.

Chinese summit founder denies links to forum featuring Najib
Posted by: superadmin - 12-27-2021, 05:45 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: FMT-lee-kim-yew-wake-up-malaysia-golden-...2019-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The founder of the Global Chinese Economic & Technology Summit (GCET) says he is not the organiser of the 11th World Chinese Economic Forum (WCEF) today which had former prime minister Najib Razak as its keynote speaker.

In a statement released yesterday, Lee Kim Yew, who founded WCEF 12 years ago, said the forum that took place today had nothing to do with him.

“It is true that the initial WCEF was founded by me in 2009 and this forum was first hosted in the Palace of the Golden Horses supported by Michael Yeoh, after a few years.

“The name of the forum has since been changed to the World Chinese Economic Summit (WCES) and this year to GCET.

“‘I have come to know that the organisers of the Dec 27 event has been using the WCEF name and some of our photos in China from two years ago and calling it the 11th WCEF. This will surely cause confusion,” he said.

Lim also said the organisers of today’s summit should not have named the event the 11th WCEF, and criticised the organisers for inviting Najib to speak at the event.

'Spider-Man: No Way Home' is first film to make $1 billion since 2019
Posted by: superadmin - 12-27-2021, 04:11 PM - Forum: English Movies - No Replies

[Image: 211218113613-02-spider-man-no-way-home-m...us-169.jpg]

New York (CNN Business)"Spider-Man: No Way Home" — the latest movie in the Marvel franchise — crossed $1 billion at the global box office, the film's studio Sony (SNE) said on Sunday.

The film reached the milestone just 12 days after it was released. Only 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" and "Avengers: Infinity War" reached that mark in less time, at 5 days and 11 days, respectively.

The film has made $1.05 billion worldwide so far.

"No Way Home" — which stars Tom Holland and Zendaya as Peter Parker and MJ as they battle villains from across the Marvel multiverse — is also the only film of the pandemic era to make $1 billion worldwide.

It is the first film to reach $1 billion since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," which was released in December 2019. Sony also said that "No Way Home" is now the top grossing film of the year worldwide.

The film — which was made by Sony and Disney's Marvel Studios — has had an amazing run at the box office, especially since the world is still in the midst of a pandemic.

BN man files petition to nullify Sungai Udang polls’ results, alleges bribery
Posted by: superadmin - 12-27-2021, 03:29 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Mohamad-Ali-Mohamad-and-Dr-Mohd-Aleef-Yusof.jpg]

PUTRAJAYA: Barisan Nasional candidate Mohamad Ali Mohamad, who lost the Sungai Udang seat in last month’s Melaka elections, has filed an election petition to nullify the victory of Perikatan Nasional’s Dr Mohd Aleef Yusof, claiming that there were elements of bribery.

Ali, who lost the seat by a 530-vote majority in a four-cornered fight, filed the petition on Dec 14 and wants the election court to declare that Aleef was not properly elected in the polls held on Nov 20.

He wants the result to be nullified and the court to make orders it deems fit, including costs.

Ali named Aleef, the Sungai Udang seat returning officer and the Election Commission as respondents to his petition.

Case management will be held in Melaka on Dec 30 for a court deputy registrar to give direction to all parties.

  Kelantan ready for change

From Zaid Ibrahim

Our family home in Pasir Hor, Kota Bharu, is not for sale. Someone posted on Facebook that the house was for sale, but that is not so anymore. I did instruct an agent to look for buyers but that was six months ago.

Since then, the political scene in our country has become so chaotic that I may have to reconsider my retirement plans. Politics aside, I might even run a food stall business, something along the lines of “kedai pati” where the customers will sit on square wooden benches, and roti canai and nasi bungkus will be served from the centre of the square wooden planks.

We have a situation where so many new political parties mushroom all over. The latest is Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM). A few weeks ago, we heard that Warisan from Sabah is coming to take over peninsular politics. That move is being embraced enthusiastically by some DAP and Muda members.

I doubt if these parties stand for anything substantial. Warisan, for example, will not dare to open up Sabah and Sarawak for Peninsular Malaysians to go and work there.

Now we from the peninsula can even be barred from entering these places if they so wish. Yet, Shafie Apdal declares that he will be a prime minister for all Malaysians.

As for PBM, I seriously doubt they can offer anything significant for Malaysians and for the country to progress in the 21st century. I am impressed with their sound bites, but there is nothing beyond that. I don’t think I am out of line if I ask if that party is Azmin Ali’s party.
