KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia maintained its impressive trade performance in January 2023 with trade, exports, and imports registering the highest monthly value for the month of January.
The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) said in a statement today that trade expanded by 1.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM207.51 billion, with exports rising by 1.6% to RM112.84 billion and 2.3% higher imports to RM94.67 billion.
Miti noted that the trade surplus amounted to RM18.16 billion, a decrease of 2.1%, which marked the 33rd consecutive month of trade surplus since May 2020.
“The export expansion was bolstered by strong exports of petroleum products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as electrical and electronic (E&E) products.
“Exports to major trading partners, notably Asean and Japan, recorded double-digit growth. Compared with December 2022, trade, exports, imports, and trade surplus contracted by 11.8%, 14.4%, 8.6% and 35.5% respectively, due to shorter working days and long festive holidays,” it shared.

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil has defended the media’s right to do source stories and protect their sources’ identities.
Fahmi, who was asked by Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) if the government had any plans to ban media outlets from publishing stories based on sources, said there were no such restrictions on the media as long as their reports are not defamatory.
“We also take note that journalists have the right to protect their sources’ identity, but this has to be weighed against the issue of defamation,” he said.
“As an example, television channel Awesome TV reported that based on a source or suggestion, the government plans to dismiss 800,000 civil servants. This is clearly defamatory.”
He added that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be meeting with the channel’s officials today.

PETALING JAYA: Sarawakians should master English and Mandarin to help the state become a global player in various fields, says Abang Johari Openg.
The Sarawak premier said English was important in the pursuit of knowledge and development, Borneo Post reported.
“That is the reason why we use English alongside Bahasa Malaysia as an official language in Sarawak. We understand the importance of English,” he was quoted as saying at an event in Kuching last night.
He added that Mandarin was equally important as it was one of the world’s major languages.
“We need to have more Sarawakians who are proficient in Mandarin. It will be a loss for Sarawak if we don’t realise the importance of that language,” he said.

Three reasons why it’s honourable for Tengku Zafrul to resign as minister |

Letter to editor
THE title of this letter has nothing to do with the fact that Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz was re-admitted into the Cabinet of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government via backdoor despite having lost in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Such shamelessness has become the norm in Malaysian politics.
Neither has it anything to do with his dismal performance as finance minister – a portfolio he held under two prime ministers (PMs) – before being made the International Trade and Industry Minister by Anwar under the current government.

PETALING JAYA: The warlike posturing displayed by members of Terengganu PAS Youth in their Himpunan Pemuda Islam Terengganu (Himpit) parade could send a wrong image of Islam and the country, says religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar.
Na’im said it would be better if the parade organiser showcased the Islamic values of peace, unity and well-being.
“I was informed about a youth assembly programme that involved a parade where the Islamic religious symbols were displayed. The parade created various perceptions and frustrations in society,” he said in a statement.
“In my opinion, parading in such a way is unnecessary and could send a wrong image of Islam and the country.
“All parties have obligations to ensure peace and harmony in the society (and) any action that could create public unrest should be avoided at all costs.”
