In the 15 years Chitra Bhan Khatri has been keeping bees in west Nepal, he has never had trouble providing food for his insects, until 2021 when unseasonally heavy rain left his honeybees hungry.

Five days of torrential rainfall in Dang district in October sent temperatures plummeting, killing the bright yellow blooms of the mustard plants Khatri grows to provide nectar and pollen for his 300 colonies of European honeybees.

Then, when he took his bees to graze on nectar from chiuri (butter) trees in a nearby forest, he discovered that the rains had knocked all the flowers off their branches, he said.

As he walked through his apiary inspecting his hives with their empty honeycombs, the 44-year-old beekeeper said he used to extract more than 40 kilograms of honey per hive each year. But in 2021, his insects produced less than half of that.

Previously, Khatri had always been able to move his hives to another part of the region to feed, but in 2021 there was almost no pollen or nectar to be found anywhere.

"My 500,000 rupee [$4,220] investment has all gone in vain," he said. "Honey is my sole source of income. I don't know how I can cover my household expenses."

China has been playing an indispensable role across the globe in battling the COVID-19 pandemic by providing medical supplies and vaccines to the international community, with the country supplying the most vaccines to the world, a senior official of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Monday.

China had provided about 372 billion face masks, more than 4.2 billion pieces of protective clothing, and 8.4 billion test reagents to the international community as of the end of 2021, Ning Jizhe, director of the NBS, said during a press briefing in Beijing.

In addition, China has supplied more than 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to more than 120 countries and international organizations, becoming the country that has supplied the most vaccines to the world as of the end of last year, Ning noted.

Omicron cases in Beijing, Shenzhen suspected of links to packages from North America
Posted by: superadmin - 01-18-2022, 10:43 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

China's postal administration on Monday vowed to "build a barrier" against COVID-19 cases imported through international express mail, after at least two Omicron cases, one in Beijing and another one in Shenzhen, were suspected of tracking back to packages from North America.

Virologists warned of the high risk of packages from overseas causing domestic COVID-19 flare-ups, when the epidemic overseas is running high, as contaminated packages from epidemic-rampant countries may spread the virus to people with weak immunity through viral particles floating in the air, or people without proper protective gear.

A patient from Shenzhen, who was confirmed to be infected with Omicron on Sunday, is likely to have contracted it after being exposed to contaminated goods from overseas, Shenzhen's health authorities said at Monday's press conference.

Ancient life may be just one possible explanation for Mars rover's latest discovery
Posted by: superadmin - 01-18-2022, 10:36 AM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

[Image: 220117145008-03-curiosity-rover-mars-car...ge-169.jpg]

(CNN)In the search for life beyond Earth, NASA's Curiosity rover has been on a nearly decade-long mission to determine if Mars was ever habitable for living organisms.

A new analysis of sediment samples collected by the rover revealed the presence of carbon -- and the possible existence of ancient life on the red planet is just one potential explanation for why it may be there.

Carbon is the foundation for all of life on Earth, and the carbon cycle is the natural process of recycling carbon atoms. On our home planet, carbon atoms go through a cycle as they travel from the atmosphere to the ground and back to the atmosphere. Most of our carbon is in rocks and sediment and the rest is in the global ocean, atmosphere and organisms, according to NOAA, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

That's why carbon atoms -- with their cycle of recycling -- are tracers of biological activity on Earth. So they could be used to help researchers determine if life existed on ancient Mars.

When these atoms are measured inside another substance, like Martian sediment, they can shed light on a planet's carbon cycle, no matter when it occurred.

Learning more about the origin of this newly detected Martian carbon could also reveal the process of carbon cycling on Mars.

A study detailing these findings published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Washington (CNN Business)Executives from the nation's largest airlines asked the Biden administration for "immediate intervention" in the planned rollout of 5G technology near major airports on Wednesday, warning of dire transportation and economic consequences.

The representatives of 10 carriers asked the administration in a letter obtained by CNN to further delay the rollout near airports where Federal Aviation Administration flight restrictions take effect once the technology kicks in. The aviation world is concerned 5G signals will interfere with aviation technology including the radar altimeter onboard planes.

Fourth jab 'partially' effective against Omicron: Israeli study
Posted by: superadmin - 01-18-2022, 10:20 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

JERUSALEM – Fourth doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines against Covid-19 are only 'partially' effective for the Omicron variant of the virus, the authors of an Israeli trial said Monday.

A team from Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv began conducting a trial in December on fourth doses of coronavirus vaccines, inoculating 154 hospital personnel with Pfizer jabs and 120 other volunteers with Moderna doses.

Preliminary results of the trial "have shown that the vaccines are safe and have shown to produce substantial antibodies, but are only partially effective in defending against the Omicron variant," the hospital said in a statement.

Professor Gili Regev-Yochay, who leads the study, said that while there was an increase in antibodies after administering a fourth dose, it nonetheless "only offers a partial defenser against the virus" for those infected with the Omicron variant.

The vaccines were "extremely effective against the earlier variants," Regev-Yochay noted.

Israel was among the first countries to launch mass immunisation campaigns for its population.

It then began offering booster shots last summer, and has since greenlighted fourth shots for elderly and vulnerable populations.

More than 537,000 Israelis have received a fourth dose of vaccine, according to the health ministry's latest figures.

More than 80% of Israel's adult residents have received two coronavirus vaccine shots and more than half have also been given a booster. – AFP, January 18, 2022

Be gentlemanly, don’t hold snap polls, Johor PKR tells state BN govt
Posted by: superadmin - 01-18-2022, 10:15 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – It would be selfish and irresponsible of the Johor government to hold a snap state election while Malaysians are still reeling and recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh.

Responding to speculation on possible state polls in the coming months, the state PKR chief said the Barisan Nasional (BN)-led government should put off any plans for an early election in favour of holding it concurrently with the general election.

The 15th general election (GE) must be held no later than the middle of next year.

Syed Ibrahim said holding federal and state elections together would also allow all parties to make better and more informed preparations to face the polls.

“If it (state election) is held in the coming months, it will be too close before the GE. Why don’t we just wait for the GE then?” he told The Vibes today.

Azam Baki acting in contempt of Parliament, opposition MPs say
Posted by: superadmin - 01-18-2022, 10:13 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition lawmakers are up in arms, accusing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki of acting in contempt of Parliament by apparently disregarding its calls for meetings.

In a statement, Sepanggar MP Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman, Chan Foong Hin (Kota Kinabalu), Khoo Poay Tiong (Kota Melaka), and William Leong (Selayang) said the anti-graft chief should have attended a meeting with the parliamentary select committee (PSC) that was previously scheduled for Wednesday.

The four representatives are members of the PSC for Agencies.

The quartet said Parliament has the powers to call upon any witness to testify in line with the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952.

“We would like to emphasise that Azam Baki should have attended the PSC meeting to address issues he raised, instead of disregarding the letter of summons from Parliament.

“The jurisdiction of the PSC is to determine whether there is an effective mechanism for conducting investigations and disciplinary action into the matter.

PAC chairman must apologise to Dewan Rakyat speaker, public over Standing Order

PAC chairman must apologise to Dewan Rakyat speaker, public over Standing Order misreading – Willie Mongin

[Image: 20210722-parliament-dewan_rakyat-bernama.jpg]

I read with sheer amazement how an MP from the opposition is able to misread a Standing Order, or pretend to misread the Standing Order in order to mislead the public.

Public Accounts Committee chairman YB Wong Kah Woh says Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Seri Azhar Azizan Harun has the discretion to suspend Parliament’s Standing Orders to make the inquiry into Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Tan Sri Azam Baki’s shareholding public.

Wong was referring to Standing Order 90(2) and said: “The speaker is not right. He has the power to initiate the suspension of the Standing Orders by referring the same to the House for a decision pursuant to Standing Order 90(2).”
