Probe urged into claim of cops eating food ordered by hungry flood victim

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have come under pressure online to investigate a netizen’s claim that food paid for and ordered by a flood victim for her family was consumed by officers at a cop tent instead.

The account of the alleged incident has gone viral after Twitter user @AndreaReetika shared screengrabs of her cousin Vaishnavi’s Instagram story detailing the cops’ actions at Taman Sri Muda, one of the worst-hit flood areas in Shah Alam.

The post has since garnered nearly 21,000 retweets and 11,100 likes at press time.

Rafidah slams ‘clueless’ government which triggers, not manages, crises
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 07:18 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The current “clueless” government has proven to be more adept at triggering crises than addressing them, Rafidah Aziz said today.

The former international trade and industry minister said the government had shown its inability to properly address the needs of people affected by the floods.

“As usual, there is no coherence here in addressing national issues, as reflected in the inability and impotence of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to grasp the seriousness of this national disaster, emphasising costs at a time when lives and livelihoods are at stake.

“All that the government seems to understand is to fall back on cash handouts, when people have lost their clothes and wouldn’t even be able to shop for things, with roads and vehicles badly damaged.”

After the torrent of rain over the weekend that flooded numerous areas of the country, the government has come under fire over its weak and slow response. Days after the rain stopped on Saturday evening, many people are still trapped in their homes and waiting for help to arrive.

“Clearly, this is not a government that can be depended upon as the supposed head of the ‘Malaysian Family’,” Rafidah said in a statement.

“It clearly cannot effectively manage crises. The government itself has proven to be the trigger for crises even during its short tenure.”

When the common man took over from the govt
Posted by: superadmin - 12-23-2021, 07:08 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

From Daniel Victor

The past weekend has been the most tiring, most emotional roller coaster ride in my life. The stakes were high and so was the water level at Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam.

I received the distress message on Saturday evening from “a brother” that water had entered their house. After a few moments, it was already at knee level and the flooded roads were impassable.

After a few hours, all the cars on the road were completely submerged.

As I was occupied in the morning, I was only able to travel to Sri Muda in the afternoon after our pastor, Pastor Noah called me.

The trip to Sri Muda was tough as many roads were closed. When I reached Sri Muda, the situation was very tense and emotions were running high.

The line was so bad and there was no internet connection at all. I tried to reach my brother but couldn’t do so. The only way I could communicate with him was through SMS.

Court of Appeal rejects Putrajaya’s stay of execution against Family Frontiers
Posted by: superadmin - 12-22-2021, 06:38 PM - Forum: Stop Gender Inequality - Replies (5)

KUALA LUMPUR – The Court of Appeal has denied Putrajaya’s stay of execution application against a high court decision that confirmed Malaysian mothers’ equal rights to automatically confer citizenship to their overseas-born children.

A three-quorum panel featuring Datuk Seri Kamaludin Md Said, Datuk S Nantha Balan and Datuk See Mee Chun chaired the hearing today.

They agreed with senior lawyer Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar who told the court the current matter is about people, not property or money.

He emphasised that the children should be allowed to enjoy the fruits of the successful high court judgement immediately.

NGO Family Frontiers said in a statement that this ruling is in line with Putrajaya’s commitment made on September 24 to amend the federal constitution to give recognition to the previous high court decision.

“The Court of Appeal’s decision would mean that Malaysian mothers can now obtain identity documents for their overseas-born children, consequently putting an end to these children’s struggles with regard to access to fundamental rights – this includes affordable healthcare and education, and the ability to live with their family without the fear of separation.

“Malaysian mothers are ecstatic by the decision,” said the NGO.

China fines 'live-streaming queen' Viya $210 million for tax evasion
Posted by: superadmin - 12-22-2021, 11:57 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

New Delhi/Beijing (CNN Business)Chinese live-stream shopping influencer Huang Wei, known as Viya, has been hit with a whopping $210 million penalty for tax evasion and kicked off social media.

Viya — also known in China as the "live-streaming queen" — was ordered to pay 1.34 billion yuan in back taxes, late fees and fines, the State Taxation Administration said Monday on its website.

It's the largest penalty ever imposed on a live-streamer, according to the Chinese state tabloid Global Times, and a sign that President Xi Jinping's government won't be letting up pressure on internet celebrities anytime soon.

From 2019 to 2020, Huang evaded more than 640 million yuan ($100 million) in taxes "by falsely reporting the commission income she earned from live-streaming platforms," a tax official in Hangzhou said on Monday.

"If she can pay the tax, late fee and fine within the prescribed time limit, she will not be investigated for criminal accountability," the official added. "If she fails ... the tax authority will transfer it to the police department for processing according to law."

Just 10 minutes of jogging could be enough to boost your mood and your brain
Posted by: superadmin - 12-22-2021, 09:52 AM - Forum: Health News - No Replies

A wealth of scientific studies highlight the positive effects of physical activity on our mood and cognitive abilities. Indeed, exercise can help improve our learning capacity and memory, while helping to reduce anxiety and depression. Now, a recent Japanese study suggests that just 10 minutes of running can boost our mood and brain function.

Physical activity is good for our health, well-being and brain, as a multitude of scientific studies have shown for many years. But a recent study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, suggests that a single 10-minute run may have effects on our mood and brain function.

According to researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, 10 minutes of jogging could have more impact than cycling, the exercise form often used in scientific studies. Here, the researchers specifically measured the impact of jogging on the brain.

"Running, compared to pedaling, is a whole-body locomotive movement that may confer more mental health via strongly stimulating brains," the study explains. "Although running impacts on mental health but their underlying brain mechanisms have yet to be determined," the authors continue, since many studies have been carried out based on cycling.

Bigger challenges for moderates: PKR must push reform for GE15, says party man

GEORGE TOWN – PKR should continue to pursue its own reform agenda to prepare for the 15th general election, as moderate-standing parties will be facing bigger challenges according to most accounts, said PKR legal bureau head Mohd Yusmadi Yusoff.

Yusmadi said that contrary to current perceptions, the multiracial party is not done and dusted yet, despite suffering consecutive losses in Melaka and Sarawak.

“It is only when PKR is pushed to the corner that it fights back with vigour.

“We are a party born from reformists. The party comprises people who do not accept the status quo easily, especially when the country suffers as a result of it,” he said during an interview with The Vibes recently.

Yusmadi, who is plotting his own comeback trail, suggested that the party has an internal reform agenda that includes reaching out to the young, asking those who have lost faith to politely leave, and to consolidate its strength as a moderate and reform-oriented party.

“Reform agendas around the world have taken decades. Look at Nelson Mandela’s struggle.

Mobile network trade body backs plan for second 5G wholesaler
Posted by: superadmin - 12-21-2021, 12:26 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A European mobile network trade body has backed the idea of a second 5G wholesale network for Malaysia in competition with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), the government agency for the rollout of the new technology.

Julian Gorman, head of Asia-Pacific for UK-based Global System for Mobile Communications Association, said competition would bring significant benefits to telecommunication companies and customers.

He told FMT the mobile telecommunications companies need to find new sources of revenue growth as well as optimise their cost structure to meet the increase in investment required to bring 5G to life.

“Multiple wholesale networks increase competition in network technology and deployment and promote investment in innovation to sustain leadership in market share,” he said.

According to a Reuters report, Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile have recommended that the government allow two wholesale 5G networks, each to be built and operated by a consortium of carriers.
