  • Analysis will allow the ‘government, business and scientific community to understand modern China better’, says head of institute overseeing the lab
  • Move reflects the changing views within Russian academia on the West and China, especially in the past two years, according to Chinese observer

Russia has opened a state-funded research centre on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ideology “to understand modern China better”.

The Modern Ideology of China Research Laboratory was launched in June by the Russian Academy of Sciences at its Institute of China and Contemporary Asia (ICCA) in Moscow.

It is the first such research centre on the Chinese leader’s political doctrine – known as Xi Jinping Thought – outside China, according to state news agency Xinhua.

  The return of the warlords

The turmoil in Russia unleashed by Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner Group has drawn rapt attention in capitals throughout the world, but probably nowhere more so than in Beijing.

The reason is not only that Russia is a trusted partner for China, but also that there are clear historical parallels between Russia this insurrectionary weekend and events a century ago that weakened China and left it vulnerable to invasion.

Today, Russia runs the risk of being split between four or five factions, each with its own army. Aside from the Russian army and the Wagner Group, there are smaller forces under the control of the mayor of Moscow, the local militarist Ramzan Kadyrov in Chechnya, and a National Guard officially under President Vladimir Putin’s command but outside the chain of command of the Russian army. Various other armed forces protect the private business interests of a select group of Russian oligarchs.

A hundred years ago, it was China that was split between “warlords”. The collective memory of that period is one reason why China’s leaders are determined to keep military force firmly under the ruling Communist Party’s control.

Many Malaysian WhatsApp groups from Africa to New Zealand have been discussing the case of the lady who was issued a summons for wearing shorts in her own shop in Kelantan recently.

There was an uproar on social media, with hundreds of comments everywhere, many on the lines of “am not surprised”, “typical Malaysia”.

But many don’t realise that you cannot change the attitude of government servants overnight. They think just because Anwar Ibrahim is prime minister, he can do something and bring changes tomorrow.

Anwar brushes off ‘green wave’ in coming state polls
Posted by: superadmin - 06-30-2023, 07:33 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (10)

BUKIT MERTAJAM – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has brushed aside the notion of a political “green wave” in the upcoming six state elections.

He said the issue is more to do with failure to counter fallacious propaganda and racial rhetoric by certain quarters.

“It is about the failure to address some of the concerns. Failure to fight off the incessant propaganda. (These are) nonsensical issues brought up by some PAS leaders.”

Anwar said this after attending Qurban Perdana at the futsal court in Arowana, Permatang Pauh.

Anwar, who is on a half-day visit to mainland Penang, has three programmes here before he heads back to Kuala Lumpur later today.

Questioned about his strategy for the six state elections, the Pakatan Harapan chairman indicated that it would be revealed some time after the Hari Raya Aidiladha season.

He commented that there were “good vibes” at the festive event he was present at, with the crowd also including PAS people.

PETALING JAYA: Tiong King Sing said his visit to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) had exposed the alleged corrupt activities at the country’s main gateway.

The tourism, arts and culture minister had also admitted that he was at the centre of the commotion recently.

“My presence uncovered a culture of corruption by a few officials and chronic abuse of power,” he said in a statement.

He added that he will be providing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission with details.

Remarks by US officials send out mixed signals; Republicans’ interference stumbling block to high-level exchanges: experts

Shortly after the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his visit to China that helped relaunch the high-level exchanges between the two countries, the US top diplomat came up with some remarks addressing the US-China relations, which according to some experts, unleashed mixed signals, putting the sincerity of Washington to repair the soured ties into question.

Experts pointed out that the Biden administration appears to lack the ability to manage domestic politics regarding stabilizing China ties, as recent negative moves of Republicans on the Taiwan question and other China-related issues are seen as a major stumbling block to high-level exchanges despite that more US officials expressed the hope to reengage with China, experts said.

Blinken said in a conversation at the Council on Foreign Relations on Wednesday that the US and China need to find a way to "coexist peacefully" amid heightened competition, claiming that the US relationship with China is a "long-term competition" without a "clear finish line," according to US media reports.
