I AGREE with concerns that the Madani government may move to the right to appeal to the conservative Malay vote as expressed by PKR MP for Pasir Gudang Hassan Abdul Karim, DAP MP for Bukit Bendera Syerleena Abdul Rashid and Amanah secretary-general Datuk Mohd Hatta Ramli.
However, there is no need to panic as there are silver linings in the black clouds of the six state polls.
What the Madani government should do for the next four years is to spell out and implement the Madani vision beneficial to both Malays and non-Malays.
Make this a great national effort to make Malaysia rise up again to become a great world-class nation and forestall Malaysia from becoming a divided, failed and corrupt state like Sri Lanka when Malaysia celebrates its Centennial in 2057.
If DAP is anti-Malay, anti-Islam, anti-royalty, is the cause of the May 13 riots in Kuala Lumpur and is even a communist, DAP should not be getting a single Malay vote in the six state polls on Aug 12.
Yet DAP was able to obtain substantial Malay votes in Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Penang as illustrated by three victories in Selangor – Ng Suee Lin in Sekinchan, Lee Kee Hiong in Kuala Kubu Baharu and Lwi Kian Keong in Sungei Pelek.

PETALING JAYA: Rumours abound that Amirudin Shari will not be appointed as the menteri besar of Selangor for a second term after Pakatan Harapan failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the recent state polls.
A PKR leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said while Selangor PH chairman Amirudin, who retained his Sungai Tua seat, had performed well as menteri besar, he had failed to get the support of Malay voters.
The source said the name of Fahmi Ngah, who was elected as Seri Setia assemblyman on Saturday, was being bandied about to succeed Amirudin.
“Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar went missing when floods struck the state, but he was still backed by the electorate,” the source said, referring to Samsuri’s trip to New Zealand when floods struck the east coast in December. Samsuri later apologised for his absence.

GEORGE TOWN – Facing a resurgent opposition, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow now contends with an uphill task in selecting the best names as two deputy chief ministers and eight state executive councillors
Chow, 65, who is fresh into his second term after receiving a two-third mandate over the weekend, had just punched in on his first day on the job when reports emerged of flash floods and unusual storms in the Batu Ferringhi tourism belt.
This time, there was no senior state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh to explain climate change’s ill-effects on Penang.
All eyes are now on Chow as he is expected to unveil the state government line-up within the next several days.

There were not many surprises in the results of the much-hyped elections in six Malaysian states, given that the outcome had been expected. Most significantly, no state government changed hands, so it’s political status quo for now.
However, the voting was a clear confirmation on the rise of political Islam, and carries huge implications for our nation’s future. Are the implications good or bad? That depends on how you define “good” or “bad”.
And how do you even define “country”?
Many countries are becoming more conservative, even while also becoming more liberal: the vocal, motivated and active religious minority wields power, while the larger liberal majority who aren’t as politically active doesn’t.

SHAH ALAM: A police report has been filed over an alleged dubious vote count in the Sungai Kandis constituency at the state assembly elections on Saturday.
Pakatan Harapan representative Shaari Abdul Malik said he lodged the report on behalf of the PH candidate, Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, who was defeated by 167 votes. An election petition would be filed later, he said.
Shaari said there were doubts about the tallying process including a discrepancy over the number of unreturned ballot papers. “All the votes that were stated were not put in the ballot box,” he said.

WITH Perikatan Nasional (PN) now having wrestled 22 seats in Selangor thus denying the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) alliance of its two-thirds majority, it is high time for the coalition to play the checks-and-balance role effectively if indeed it wants to be a formidable alterative bloc.
PH has been having a good time pushing through its own agenda rather than listening to the voices of the people. With the exception of former DAP veteran, Ronnie Liu, backbenchers and the Opposition members were relatively silent over a number of issues.
Among them are issues pertaining to the PJD-Link, logging in forest reserve lands, mega projects which benefit only certain quarters, stray animals and poor governance.
The bulk of the issues which are local government-related such as potholes, illegal carwash and hawkers, poor street lighting, flash floods, illegal dumps, poor maintenance of public amenities are major sore points for the people on a daily basis.
