PETALING JAYA: Rumours abound that Amirudin Shari will not be appointed as the menteri besar of Selangor for a second term after Pakatan Harapan failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the recent state polls.

A PKR leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said while Selangor PH chairman Amirudin, who retained his Sungai Tua seat, had performed well as menteri besar, he had failed to get the support of Malay voters.

The source said the name of Fahmi Ngah, who was elected as Seri Setia assemblyman on Saturday, was being bandied about to succeed Amirudin.

“Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar went missing when floods struck the state, but he was still backed by the electorate,” the source said, referring to Samsuri’s trip to New Zealand when floods struck the east coast in December. Samsuri later apologised for his absence.

Amirudin should remain Selangor MB, say analysts
[Image: pc-mb-selangor009.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Amirudin Shari should be retained as the Selangor menteri besar for a second term, analysts said amid speculation that he may be replaced by another Pakatan Harapan leader.

Rumours of a leadership change emerged after PH failed to secure a two-thirds majority in Saturday’s Selangor state elections, where PH won 32 seats and Perikatan Nasional claimed 22. PH ally Barisan Nasional won the other two seats in the 56-seat state assembly.

However, two analysts FMT spoke to said PH should not replace Selangor PH chief Amirudin as he was not to blame for PN’s strong showing in Selangor.

PN component parties Bersatu and PAS only won seven seats in the last state elections in 2018.

Selangor BN backs Amirudin for MB post
[Image: d99b69c7-amirudin-shari-n-megat-zulkarna...180823.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Selangor Barisan Nasional is backing Amirudin Shari to be reappointed menteri besar, following the unity coalition’s victory in the recent state polls.

According to Berita Harian, Selangor BN chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin said the coalition’s decision to support Amirudin for the post was made after a meeting this afternoon.

“We will support him (Amirudin),” Megat was quoted as saying.

He also said he hoped Amirudin would continue leading with excellence.

Previously, Amirudin said the Selangor palace would announce the appointment of the next menteri besar soon. The Sungai Tua assemblyman was appointed Selangor menteri besar in 2018.

During campaigning for the Selangor polls, Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim announced that Amirudin would remain menteri besar if PH-BN won the state.

However, speculation has been rife that another PKR assemblyman may be appointed menteri besar instead of Amirudin.

Green Party: Excessive deforestation during his first term main reason not to re-appoint Amirudin as MB
[Image: Strategies-to-reduce-deforestation-1.jpg]

ALTHOUGH the Green Party appears to be the only political entity that opposes the re-appointment of caretaker Selangor menteri besar (MB) Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for a second term, many Selangorians have similarly expressed their unhappiness the latter’s performance.

While most Selangorians welcome development in the state, they are particularly concerned about over-development of their township, clearance of tropical rainforests which were meant to be forest reserves, and mega projects that they fear will become another white elephant in the state.

There have been numerous instances whereby the state government under Amirudin’s leadership has neglected grouses on the ground with regard to public amenities, prompting even his nemesis Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to call the state ‘Selangor Darul Sampah’ during his political campaign in the Gombak parliamentary election in the last general election.

The Sungai Tua assemblyman took his oath of office before Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at Istana Alam Shah in Klang this morning.

His reappointment puts an end to speculation over the menteri besar’s post after the Aug 12 state election, which was won by Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional.

PH and BN will form the state government after securing 34 of the 56 state seats.
