Tian Chua must prove he’s truly Azmin-less, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 03-29-2022, 10:22 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Tian Chua still has a future in PKR, as long as he can prove to the party leadership and members that he has cut all ties with former deputy president Azmin Ali, says an analyst.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said the party’s rank and file should be willing to accept him back into the fold if he showed enough remorse. The onus was on Tian Chua, said Fauzi.

Royal address for first meeting, fifth session of 14th Perak assembly – Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah

[Image: 20201210-sultan-nazrin-shah-bernama.jpg]

HONOURABLE speaker of the House, praise be to Allah, and by the grace of Allah, may He be praised and exalted, we are able to hold this First Meeting in the Fifth Year of the Fourteenth Perak State Assembly.

The Covid-19 pandemic shall go down in history as the most devastating global disaster, affecting not just the world economic performances, disrupting lives, managing healthcare, and food supplies, rather leaving a trail of trauma that still tugs at the emotions of many, poets lament of omnipresent barbs of panic, tourists without destinations, wanderers without directions, explorers without borders, ships docked at ports, airplanes grounded in hangars, trains stranded at stations, flowers withered, farms unattended and livestock forsaken. More heartbreaking is the sight of millions in their death throes. More than 185 nations struggled to rein in the numbers, yet infection levels climbed, unrelenting. Besieged, man is herded into a complicated war with an unseen enemy.

Bung-Musa meeting sets tongues wagging in Sabah
Posted by: superadmin - 03-29-2022, 09:08 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: sabah-bn-Bung-Moktar-Radin-Musa-Aman-fb.jpg]

KOTA KINABALU: A recent meeting between former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman and state Barisan Nasional chief Bung Moktar Radin and his Umno team has set tongues wagging in the state.

Speculation that the Sabah Umno strongman is coming back to the forefront of Sabah politics is being widely talked about among political circles and in social media.

A photo of the meeting posted on Bung’s Facebook account last Friday has already garnered more than 3,000 likes, over 300 comments and 135 shares.

Besides Bung, others in the photo were Sabah Umno deputy chief Yakub Khan, state Umno secretary Jafry Ariffin and Usukan assemblyman Salleh Said Keruak.

This has led to speculation over whether a new political game may be in the offing in the state ahead of the 15th general election.

Taliban ban Afghan women from flying without male relative
Posted by: superadmin - 03-28-2022, 03:51 PM - Forum: Stop Gender Inequality - No Replies

KABUL – The Taliban have ordered airlines in Afghanistan to stop women from boarding flights unless accompanied by a male relative, aviation officials said.

The latest restriction on women follows Wednesday’s shutdown of all girls’ secondary schools just hours after they were allowed to reopen for the first time since the hardline Islamists seized power in August.

Two officials from Afghanistan’s Ariana Afghan airline and Kam Air said late yesterday that the Taliban had ordered them to stop boarding women if they were travelling alone.

The decision was taken after a meeting on Thursday between representatives of the Taliban, the two airlines, and airport immigration authorities, the officials said, asking not to be named.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, many curbs on women’s freedoms have been reintroduced – often implemented locally at the whim of regional officials from the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice Ministry.

The ministry said it had not issued any directive banning women from taking flights alone.

‘Cold war’ possible, but not break-up: Fahmi on PKR polls
Posted by: superadmin - 03-28-2022, 09:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 04052021_-_KUL_-_YB_Fahmi_Fadzil_making_...a_-_17.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The coming PKR election in May will not lead to a split in the party as the contest will be a democratic process guided by party discipline, information chief Fahmi Fadzil has said.

The party polls, scheduled for May 13 to 18, are expected to be hotly contested, with former party strategist Rafizi Ramli returning to the fold by declaring that he would stand for deputy president.

Fahmi said the contest may lead to a “cold war” between the competing camps, but stressed that the party will make sure to enforce discipline to clamp down on any disturbances.

Subsidy rationalisation ‘necessary evil’ for efficient economy, says professor
Posted by: superadmin - 03-28-2022, 09:36 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 24112020-KUL-Fuel_petrol_-_vibes_pic.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The removal of certain key subsidies may put a dent in the pockets of the majority of Malaysians, but is necessary to help the country’s economy prosper, according to an economist.

Sunway University economics professor Yeah Kim Leng argued that general subsidies granted by the government today are inefficient and could be better utilised on more productive uses with greater multiplier effects.

This includes building public infrastructure, spending on skills upgrading, ensuring technological improvement of industries, building affordable housing, and offering grants to smaller businesses.

More importantly, he said the rationalisation of subsidies will help improve Malaysia’s current precarious fiscal and debt positions.

But rather than removing subsidies at one go, Yeah suggested that this be done on a gradual basis to reduce its impact on consumers, and to offer targeted subsidies to the poor and underprivileged.

DAP may lose 5 of its 42 parliamentary seats in GE15, says Guan Eng
Posted by: superadmin - 03-28-2022, 09:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The DAP expects to lose up to five seats from its present 42 parliamentary seats based on the voting patterns in the recent Johor state elections, party chairman Lim Guan Eng said today.

He said the results in Johor had also shown that DAP should retain four of the current five parliamentary seats in the state, adding that the Labis constituency may pose some difficulties.

“Johor Umno deputy chairman Nur Jazlan Mohamed recently said he would not recontest his Pulai parliamentary seat because based on the Johor state election results, he would lose.

Watch the video here.

“Nur Jazlan said that despite the party winning 40 out of the 56 state seats, Barisan Nasional (BN) is not the majority party in Johor as it won only 43% of the popular vote.

China industrial profit up but mired in single-digit growth
Posted by: superadmin - 03-27-2022, 07:47 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: China-factory_20220327180504_reutersuk.j...x1NrQVOaj1]

BEIJING (March 27): Profit growth at China's industrial firms accelerated in the first two months of the year, in line with other signs of momentum in the economy, although the outlook is clouded by domestic Covid-19 outbreaks and the war in Ukraine.

Profits rose 5.0% in from a year earlier, up from a 4.2% gain in December, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Sunday.

The growth in January-February was driven by surging profits in the energy and raw materials sectors, thanks to higher prices of commodities such as crude oil and coal. January and February data are typically combined to smooth out distortions from the Lunar New Year holiday, which can fall in either month.
