PH partners’ dilemma: hot young thing or old faithful?
Posted by: superadmin - 03-22-2022, 08:42 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: After a disastrous outing at the Johor elections, Pakatan Harapan allies Amanah and DAP have a choice of forming a new relationship or sticking by their old partner PKR.

Political analyst Azmi Hassan says Amanah and DAP should join forces with Muda, the new youth-based party formed by Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

However, fellow analyst Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid says the pair should not form alliances with any new party but should carry on with their old partner.

Azmi, a senior fellow with Akademi Nusantara, said Muda had potential, going by the party’s showing in the Johor election. The party won one seat and garnered 48,072 votes or 3.46% of all ballots cast.

Don’t delay tabling anti-hopping bill, says Umno veep
Posted by: superadmin - 03-22-2022, 08:33 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (2)

PETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has urged the government to no longer delay the tabling of an anti-hopping bill.

Calling the bill a “progressive move”, Khaled said the bill was part of Umno’s commitment to eradicate all forms of mandate abuse by elected representatives.

The bill was also an important part of political reforms supported by both Umno and the opposition.

“If the tabling of the bill is delayed for too long, it will raise doubts about Umno’s commitment in championing political and institutional reforms as promised. Therefore, it should not be delayed any longer and must be given priority by the government,” he said in a statement today.

  ‘Something wrong with the EC’
Posted by: superadmin - 03-22-2022, 08:29 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – The Election Commission (EC) is experiencing a trust deficit that needs to be addressed immediately.

This is the reaction of several politicians to Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah’s remarks yesterday on enhancing the effectiveness and trustworthiness of the EC, with one of them simply saying that there’s “something wrong” with the institution.

The sultan had asked the Conference of Rulers and Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to pay special attention to the selection of EC members and ensure that they command the public trust.

The deputy Agong made the proposal during a book launch yesterday as he noted that the commission’s members cannot simply be dismissed, barring grounds to do so, similar to the position of a Federal Court judge.

No need for threats to push for anti-party hopping law, Shafie tells DAP
Posted by: superadmin - 03-21-2022, 04:42 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 19032022-SBH-shafie_apdal_warisan-warisan_pic.jpeg]

KOTA KINABALU – There is no need for DAP to threaten the federal government with an end to the current political ceasefire in a bid to expedite the anti-party hopping law, as there is already wide support for the proposed legislation, Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said today.

Yesterday, outgoing DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Pakatan Harapan (PH) pact and the Umno-led federal administration would be “finished and ended” if there was no progress in the anti-party hopping bill.

Shafie said many political parties and MPs have already voiced support for the government to push ahead with the proposed bill, as the nation’s democratic system has been tainted by political turncoats.

“There was no need to issue any threats. There must be consensus,” he told reporters during a press conference here today.

EC must be free of executive, party influence, says Perak ruler
Posted by: superadmin - 03-21-2022, 02:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: sultan-nazrin-Pilihan-Raya-Demokrasi-Malaysia-FMT-4.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has called for a “free and fair” election process.

He said while voting is the responsibility of the public, they must be assisted by the Election Commission (EC).

“The EC must maintain its impartiality and transparency whenever an election is conducted.

“It must remain an independent body free of executive or party influence to ensure a free and fair election,” he said when launching a book, ‘Pilihan Raya Demokrasi Malaysia: Tanding, Pilih, Menang, Tadbir’, co-authored by former EC chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman.

Sultan Nazrin said it is important the EC instils public belief to ensure voters are confident in casting their ballots.

To encourage voting, he said, the public must be confident that the process is free from interference and tampering and have a complete understanding of politics.

Gobind Singh tallies most votes at DAP committee polls
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 08:49 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (7)

SHAH ALAM – Gobind Singh Deo garnered the highest number of votes during the DAP central executive committee elections (CEC) here this evening.

Despite gaining 1,782 votes out of 2,179 ballots, the Puchong MP is not guaranteed the secretary-general post as it is likely to go to Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who ranked third with 1,625 votes.

This is due to an understanding between party leaders that the reigns of the party will be helmed by the former transport minister.

While Gobind topped the list, outgoing secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had placed eighth among the top 30 CEC members with 1,311 votes.

Lim was behind Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, among others.
