China, Iran and Saudi Arabia released a joint statement on Friday saying Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to re-establish ties and reopen embassies within two months after a negotiation meeting in Beijing.

The news came Friday night attracting worldwide attention, and is seen as a breakthrough in bilateral relations for longtime regional foes Iran and Saudi Arabia. Some analysts praised the efforts made by the two countries and China in seeking peaceful settlements of disputes amid global growing uncertainties.

On Friday, Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held the meeting between the Iran delegation headed by Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and the Saudi Arabia delegation headed by Musaad bin Mohammed Al-Aliban, Minister of State, Member of the Council of Ministers, and National Security Advisor of Saudi Arabia. The joint statement was released after the meeting.

Will the pro-Muhyiddin’s protest ‘reformasi’ style succeed?
Posted by: superadmin - 03-11-2023, 11:20 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

SOME Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders are claiming that they will launch a bigger movement—bigger than the reformasi movement that backed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was sent to jail—to back ex-PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin against the corruption charges.

Muhyiddin is now part of the ‘court cluster’ since he has been arraigned and charged with money laundering offenses.

The PN supporters and leaders are calling their movement to ‘free’ Muhyiddin the ‘Gelombang Abah’. They say it will be a massive movement that will show its impact during the upcoming state elections.

For the PN, the accusation against Muhyiddin is a form of political tyranny, and its leaders are saying we should expect it to be greater than the reform movement that took place some 25 years ago.

PN Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said he expected the people to rise up against all the damage done by the government today through the ‘Abah Wave’.

Silicon Valley investors and founders express shock over SVB’s collapse

Silicon Valley investors and founders express shock over SVB’s collapse, describe struggles to get money out

  • As Silicon Valley Bank was shuttered by the FDIC on Friday, investors and companies with money locked up expressed dismay at how it went down.
  • Many venture capitalists likened the collapse to a Twitter-led bank run, based more on unjustified fear than reality.
  • Investors were urging their portfolio companies to allocate money to other banks so they could pay their employees on time.

Venture capitalists and technology executives are scrambling to make sense of and account for the potential repercussions of the sudden implosion of Silicon Valley Bank on Friday.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, said Friday that U.S. federal regulators shut down Silicon Valley Bank

, the premier financial institution for Silicon Valley tech startups for the past 40 years. The collapse of SVB represents the biggest banking failure since the 2008 global economic crisis.

Malay support vital for survival of unity govt, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 03-11-2023, 09:19 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An analyst has warned of the imminence of the government’s ouster following an indication that PAS is planning to gather opposition forces against it.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania said the unity government’s lack of Malay support made it “highly likely” that it will fall before its term is up.

However, he also said this could change if Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Umno managed to “pull some Malay support” during the upcoming state polls.

Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Selangor, Kedah, Terengganu and Penang must hold state elections within the next four months.

Chin said Anwar’s Pakatan Harapan and Umno would have to win three of the six states and Anwar would have to expand his base in Kelantan and Terengganu for the government to achieve some stability.

  • Bitcoin fell below $20,000 on Friday hitting a near-two month low after a stock market sell-off in the U.S.
  • Another factor weighing on crypto prices is the collapse of Silvergate Capital, a major lender to the crytpo industry. Silvergate said Wednesday it is winding down operations and liquidating its bank.
  • Investors are also on edge after tech-focused Silicon Valley Bank said it sold off $21 billion worth of its holdings at a $1.8 billion loss.

Bitcoin fell below $20,000 on Friday, hitting a near-two-month low, after a stock market sell-off in the U.S. and the collapse of a crypto-focused lender.

The cryptocurrency market saw more than $70 billion wiped off its value over the course of the 24 hours to 5:12 a.m. ET.
