Is the government just playing monopoly?
Posted by: superadmin - 04-28-2023, 07:26 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

With the government currently pushing for more competition and hence, fewer monopolies in Malaysia, (Puspakom and Touch & Go are recent examples), it is natural to ask why so many monopolies were created in the first place.

Monopolies emerge for many reasons. For example the TNB monopoly in power distribution is a “natural monopoly” because it is too expensive to build two competitive electricity distribution systems. This justifies one provider.

Some, such as the Bernas rice monopoly, are created by policy. There is no real economic reason why many companies could not supply rice.

PAS will always win when ‘mufti’ and professors of Islam are silent
Posted by: superadmin - 04-26-2023, 06:54 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

IN ALL the socio-political issues framed in religion brought up by PAS – the Bon Odori festival, the Oktoberfest celebration, the alcohol-mall issue, the stewardess tudung issue and now the Sarawak casino issue – my reading is that PAS has won the “moral ground” in each and every one of them.

Even though Malaysians may heave a sigh of relief when good Muslims like the Sarawak tourism minister or the Sultan of Selangor put the matters at rest with their wise statements of nation-building and multi-racial and multi-faith inclusiveness that defines Malaysia, I know the PAS leadership is smiling broadly.

The main reason why I say PAS has won the “moral ground” with its Malay ground base supporters is that their issues were laced with Quranic verses and religious justification presented eloquently by ustaz (religious teacher) or clerics of Islam who are also politicians.

On the contrary, those who are countering them are non-Muslim politicians, Muslim politicians who are not ustaz, NGO (non-governmental organisation) like Sisters in Islam (SIS) who do not wear the tudung and are not ustazah and even Sultans who are themselves not ustaz.

Netizens defend TikTok influencer accused of ‘messing with Islam’

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Muslims have defended popular food vlogger Ceddy Ang against accusations he was “messing around” with Islam when he fasted during Ramadan.

His followers were quick to show their support for the influencer, after one netizen identified as “mjthd” asked why Ang was messing around by fasting the entire day and taking part in “sahur” even though the latter knew that Ramadan was a ritual exclusive to Muslims.

One netizen identified as Shazrie apologised on behalf of every Muslim for “our holier than thou brother”.

RM1.5 tril national debt: Shouldn’t unity government be trimming spending, bonuses, f

WOULD any company continue to be generous with bonuses (ie year-end bonus in addition to a separate Raya bonus) or throw Raya open houses across three opposition states (Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) regardless of how lavish they are when they are in RM1.5 tril debt?

Likewise, human rights advocate Charles Hector is also baffled by the fact that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim further dished out a total of four toll-free days to make this year’s Raya – the first under his unity government – a truly memorable one.

“If Anwar and the government managed to convince Malaysia’s toll operators to not collect toll for the Raya period, that would have been great,” Hector penned in his latest blog. “But now it seems that the government has to bear about RM93 mil to implement the four-day ‘Rahmah’ toll initiative.”
