PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh says he believes that DAP’s participation in the unity government could prove that the party is not the anti-Malay monster as it has been made out to be
Akmal said the sentiment of DAP being anti-Malay was the result of the people being brainwashed from an early stage with such beliefs about the party.
“Since we became the unity government, we need to prove to the people that what they believed (about DAP being anti-Malay) is wrong and distorted,” Akmal said in a Sinar Harian interview.
Umno and DAP are coalition partners in the government of Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim.

PETALING JAYA: Charles Santiago has labelled Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin a “hypocrite” for criticising an Umno leader’s call for party members to vote for DAP candidates in the upcoming state elections.
Santiago, who is DAP’s former Klang MP, said Muhyiddin was possibly “experiencing a lapse in memory” when he described Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan’s call for party members to support DAP as “strange”.

BEIJING: China’s cyberspace regulator said on Sunday that products made by US memory chipmaker Micron Technology had failed its network security review and it would bar operators of key infrastructure from buying from the company.
The decision, announced amid a dispute over chip technology between Washington and Beijing, could include sectors ranging from transport to finance, according to China’s broad definition of critical information infrastructure.

An international team of researchers led by Chinese scholars has made another groundbreaking discovery on the surface of Mars. By analyzing data obtained from the multi-spectral camera onboard the Zhurong rover, they have found evidence of marine sedimentary deposits, providing the first geological proof of the existence of an ancient ocean in the northern region of the Red Planet.
The discovery has opened up new possibilities for unraveling the planet's past and its potential for hosting life.
The research, titled "Evidence of Oceanic Sedimentary Rocks in Utopia Planitia: Observations from the Zhurong Rover," led by Long Xiao, professor from the School of Earth Sciences at China University of Geosciences, was published on Thursday in the prestigious scientific journal, National Science Review.

KUALA LUMPUR – Netizens have panned Kelantan PAS Youth chief Mohamad Kamal Mohamed over his open letter condemning Kelantanese influencer Khairul Aming for buying tickets to the upcoming Coldplay concert in Malaysia.
Kamal earned the brickbats after accusing Khairul of supporting a band that “outwardly promotes LGBT” rights.
However, Kamal’s attempt to chastise the event immediately backfired as netizens called him out for apparently having double standards.
Many pointed out that various concerts by international artists received the green light during PAS’ tenure as the government, such as Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish.

‘Friendly advice’ or veiled threats on Malaysia’s 5G rollout? |

I read with amusement a recent Financial Times article with the headline “EU and US warn Malaysia of ‘national security’ risk in Huawei’s bid for 5G role”.
The highly regarded UK financial newspaper was referring to the US and European Union (EU) ambassadors to Malaysia writing letters to the Malaysian government last month “warning Malaysia” over risks to national security and foreign investment as it finalises a review of its 5G rollout.
The envoys alleged that Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications equipment maker blacklisted by Washington, had “lobbied heavily” for another chance at a role in building Malaysia’s 5G network.
The two envoys were referring to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s order to review the RM11 billion 5G network contract awarded by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) – a special purpose vehicle under the finance ministry – to Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson under the previous administration.

Can we trust unity govt’s politicians? |

I once had a dodgy business partner from Europe. He eventually absconded, leaving behind a mess that I had to clean up. It was a huge loss for me, and it took me almost two years to bounce back.
The signs were ominous. He regularly started every sentence with the prefix: “…believe me, Shankar.” And, I should have known better as I was always uncomfortable with him.
I felt similar after the Unity Government National Convention 2023. I could not help but feel uneasy watching Anwar Ibrahim squirm a little in his seat while his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi waxed lyrical about the prime minister being the “real deal”.
Then we had the Loke Siew Fook poem about becoming friends with his enemies for the sake of unity. For Malaysians who follow our political landscape closely, it was a rather surreal convention.

Rumours rife of split in PAS; tide may turn in PH’s favour for looming state polls |

A RIFT in PAS between its president Tan Sri Hadi Awang and his deputy Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has sparked a discord within the Islamist party, a development that the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) alliance should capitalise fully to tame the so-called green tsunami effect in the run-up to the upcoming state polls.
With rumours rife of the split between the two prominent leaders, Hadi is said to have resorted to seek election funding from former two-time premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad instead of relying solely on funding from its Perikatan Nasional (PN) ally Bersatu whose bank accounts have been frozen by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
In an earlier report, UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has also hinted that PAS is about to split but he did not reveal the possible source of the split.
“Interestingly, Hadi’s collaboration with Dr Mahathir by endorsing the latter’s Malay Proclamation agenda has placed the cleric at odds with descendants of the 1985 Memali incident,” a source familiar with PAS told FocusM on condition of anonymity.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has taken a swipe at PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for saying PAS is not a “halfway house” that can be used by others to further their political interest.
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said PAS’ history showed that it often rode on other parties’ coattails for its own interests.
Puad also claimed that PAS was willing to sacrifice key principles of its struggle for the sake of sharing power in government.

PETALING JAYA: Calls for Bank Negara Malaysia to face questioning in Parliament must be balanced with the need to keep the central bank free from political pressure, says a government MP.
Subang MP Wong Chen said the independence of the central bank must be maintained, to safeguard the interests of the people, economy and investors from the populist pressure exerted by politicians.
He said central bank officials could be called up by the parliamentary special select committee on finance and the economy to explain its decisions, such as the recent rise in the overnight policy rate, which had caused fears that commercial loan interest rates would also go up.
