ONION, a crucial ingredient in Malaysian staple dishes, is now selling for a record high price in the local market, worrying the Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP).
N. V. Subbarow, the coordinator of the NGO’s natural farming programmes, has revealed that onions, particularly those imported from India due to insufficient supply from local growers, have fetched an average price of RM8.50 per kg over the past week.
The item was pegged at RM6.20 per kg during the festive Christmas period due to intervention from the enforcement division of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
However, the price shot up again in the open market after the festive season was over, at a feverish RM8.50 per kg, Subbarow claimed.
He said that the authorities need to find diverse sources for onions, especially with reports that India will curb exports to meet the country’s own local demand.

“Opposition’s debates one-dimensional, lack substance,” says former MP |

A FORMER MP has panned the quality of debates among opposition MPs in Parliament, calling the topics and issues single-dimensional and lacking substance.
Speaking on the Are We OK?” podcast hosted by fellow DAP colleague Dr Ong Kian Ming, former Damansara MP Tony Pua said one of the most obvious things in Parliamentary debates these days is the “near absolute lack of substance” among opposition MPs when debating.
“The topics and issues are always single-dimensional about race, religion, alcohol, and dressing,” he remarked.
“Running a country involves so many other things and all you can talk about is race, language use, religious issues, alcohol, and dressing. That’s all you can talk about?”
Pua noted that there needs to be more understanding of the basics of public policy, adding that the issues raised in Parliament were better during Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) time as the opposition.

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar should lead the party in the 16th general election to reclaim parliamentary seats lost in the last nationwide polls, an MP said, comparing her to Benazir Bhutto and Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Hassan Karim said Nurul Izzah, the daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, was both “capable and experienced”.
“She is charismatic and is ‘prime minister material’ like former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto and former Indonesian president Megawati Soekarnoputri,” the Pasir Gudang MP from PKR said in a Facebook post.
Hassan said PKR’s outing at the nationwide polls last year was unsatisfactory after losing 18 seats, including Permatang Pauh, a stronghold where Nurul Izzah served as the MP for a single term.

Netizens want DAP to weed out irrelevant leaders for putting party in precarious position
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook could be enduring sleepless night after Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ticked off four-term Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham by reminding non-Muslims to show respect and refrain from interfering in matters related to Islamic affairs in the country.
Such reminder cannot be timelier as fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamrudin (RPK) has cheekily mooted a counter-proposal that “perhaps it makes valid sense for the Islamic Centre to have representatives in the Council of Churches so that the non-Muslim representatives can sit in the Syariah Committee” in response to the Perak DAP chairman.

THE Prime Minister's Senior Political Secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin stressed that nobody is above the law and urged the authorities to investigate former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"Investigate all those with the title "Tun" starting with Dr Mahathir and his family.
"Dr Mahathir's sarcastic statement that all those with the title "Tun" should be remanded until they reveal the source of their money shows just how arrogant he is," he said in a statement on X.
Yesterday, Dr Mahathir said all “Tuns” should be investigated and if they cannot explain where or how they got the money, their property should be seized.
Commenting with sarcasm, he said obtaining documentary evidence of their misdeeds was unnecessary and that suspicions alone should be enough.
“Tuns should not only be investigated. They should also be remanded until they reveal the source of their money. If they don’t, it must be because they are hiding,” he had said in a post on X.

PETALING JAYA: While political and economic challenges may have dominated the headlines over the past year, there were also many stories of hope and joy that pointed to the good in the world around us.
As Malaysia welcomes the new year, FMT revisits some of the most heartwarming tales from a hectic 2023.
Sleepy Bukit Rotan shines the light on religious harmony
Located between Ijok and Kuala Selangor, Bukit Rotan stood out as a locality with strong communal bonds where diverse religious communities live side by side in peace.
The small town’s local leaders – a Hindu priest, a mosque administrator and an imam – emphasised mutual respect and shared celebrations while condemning attempts to sow racial or religious discord.
Bukit Rotan’s story of harmony came in April against a backdrop of widespread controversy over the “Jom Ziarah Gereja” programme organised by an NGO under the youth and sports ministry.
