Malaysia gripped in wave of denials, accusations over alleged ‘Dubai Move’ plot to topple Anwar govt
SINGAPORE: In the days leading up to the new year, Malaysian social media was awash with not just celebratory posts but also a thick air of political intrigue fuelled by speculation that the government could soon fall.
Specifically on TikTok, a tool commonly used to spread political propaganda in Malaysia, content creators had bandied about the same phrase: Dubai Move.
Powerful political figures holidaying in United Arab Emirates’ most populous city were said to have met in December to discuss how they could topple the unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the videos said.
Then on Dec 29, these rumours grew louder when a government official took to social media to confirm the existence of the “Dubai Move”, allegedly involving opposition leaders from Perikatan Nasional (PN) and other party leaders who were not satisfied with the unity government and Mr Anwar’s leadership style.

SYDNEY: Asian shares extended a global sell-off on Wednesday while the dollar held gains as market optimism about early and aggressive US interest rate cuts ebbed ahead of the release of Fed minutes and jobs data.
MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.1% after a 1.0% drop the previous day in a sluggish start of the new year. Japan markets remain shut for a holiday.
South Korean shares slid 1.8%, Australia’s resources heavy stocks declined 1.1%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 1%, driven by a 1.5% plunge in technology shares.
“Risk assets struggled a tad yesterday, and that makes a degree of sense given the complicated back story, and the remarkable rally seen into year end,” said Padhraic Garvey, regional head of research, Americas, at ING.
“While a one-day move cannot be simply extrapolated, there are reasons to be a tad concerned on the risk front at this early phase of 2024. Geo-political concerns have not abated, and in fact if anything are elevating.”

Netizens still remember and laughing aloud at Dr Siti Mastura’s expense |

NETIZENS are still poking fun at Kepala Batas MP Dr Siti Mastura Mohamad who had suggested that certain DAP leaders were related to communist insurgent Chin Peng and former Singapore premier Lee Kuan Yew.
What tickled many people’s collective funny bone initially was the Penang PAS sole female MP’s apparent lack of understanding over Chinese surnames as she feebly tried to link “Lims” with “Lees”. She also seemed to suggest that Chinese individuals with the same surname were automatically related.
Having been ridiculed, the 34-year-old PhD holder has since been hauled to court by DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng, his father Kit Siang and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok over those statements which she made at a PAS by-election shindig in Kemaman, Terengganu on Nov 4 last year.
Interestingly, a recent post on cleric Ustaz Harun Jail’s Facebook page has featured a meme suggesting that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmaker would claim that coffee shop staple teh peng (iced tea) was formulated by Chin Peng.
The post warned netizens to not fall for a secret ploy by secret organisations to get people to inadvertently support Israel.

NEW YORK: US car maker Tesla has lost its crown as the top maker of all-electric vehicles to Chinese firm BYD, according to sales figures released today.
The US-based car manufacturer run by billionaire Elon Musk delivered 484,507 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2023, said a company filing — up more than 11% from the previous quarter.
But this increase was not enough to maintain Tesla’s crown as the world’s top battery electric vehicle producer and seller, as Chinese rival BYD reported sales yesterday of 526,409 for the same period.
