Vijay47: I have no problem at all if PAS and its youth wing consider themselves as the driving force behind efforts to advance social wellbeing and piety among the rakyat. After all, a cat may look at the queen and a hound may bay at the moon.
And being a non-Muslim, I should not be bothered if Islam prohibits gambling. Yet, I find it confusing and offensive that each time PAS embarks on some crusade to heal the world, it focuses only on matters that do not concern it at all.
If it is not gambling, it is the consumption of alcoholic beverages, if it is not crosses, it is Chinese lanterns. The things that these men can conjure up! You don’t like these facets of life, tough luck to you.
If you want to do good, why don’t you tend to the lost sheep in your own flock? Perhaps your efforts need to be directed to areas which should be more of a concern. For a start, you could try reducing the incidences of substance abuse and sexual crimes.
While you’re at it, perhaps you can also strive to bring down the level of rampant corruption.
Oops, corruption did I say? Mea culpa, a learned man has informed that corruption is not sinful.

After 18 months of frequent closures, Penang’s boutique hotels hang their hopes on interstate travel being allowed soon
GEORGE TOWN, Sept 26 — Over the past 13 years — coinciding with the city’s inscription as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2008 — the city of George Town has become known for much more than its excellent street food.
Boutique hotels, especially those located in the heritage zone, were particularly popular with out-of-state visitors as well as international tourists as they were uniquely adapted and retained the building’s original heritage features.
Now — together with most other businesses — many of these are struggling to stay afloat after 18 months of frequent closures.

Should Malaysia consider special driving licence rules for seniors? Here’s a look at some countries’ requirements
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — On Friday, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Azisman Alias called for Malaysian regulations to be changed so that senior citizens have to undergo some form of screening before getting their driving licence renewed.
A number of groups have since objected to this idea, including the Sarawak Gerontology and Geriatrics Society (SGGS), which countered by saying that there are no statistics showing that the elderly are among the highest contributors to road accidents in the country.
SGGS president Dennis Tan suggested instead that more road accidents are caused by young people driving recklessly, and the police should instead go after the mentally ill, substance abusers and repeat traffic offenders instead of the elderly.

PETALING JAYA: Civil society should push Putrajaya to look into having the Election Commission be responsible for the registration of political parties, says an opposition MP.
Describing the issue as a “low hanging fruit” that could be attained by reform-minded societies, Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming said many political parties would want to push for the change.
At present, political parties are registered with the Registrar of Societies.
Ong said Umno would be among those parties which he said had been victimised of late by the Registrar of Societies; another is Muda, which is trying to get itself registered as a political party.
He said shifting the responsibility from the RoS to the EC would also help address issues such as whether Warisan, a Sabah-based party, could contest in West Malaysian seats.
“It’s more doable in the short term as you could find broader consensus,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: It is fine to preach to the world about the usefulness of the family concept but Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob must ensure it is implemented in the country first, says a DAP leader.
Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said there are just too many divisive policies and practices in Malaysia that need to be rectified before Ismail brings the concept to the world stage.
“It is perfectly alright for Ismail to preach about the family concept, but he must ensure that it must first be implemented in the country.
“Only then can Ismail preach to the world through the United Nations. Until then, he should focus on bringing about reforms that were promised to the opposition in the Memorandum of Understanding with Pakatan Harapan,” he said in a statement.
In his inaugural speech at the UN General Assembly yesterday, Ismail said that the necessity of togetherness or family is paramount in resolving the problems of the world.
He said that the concept of one global family has its utility in stemming the tide of the Covid-19 pandemic or the problems that are rooted in the glaring economic differences between the wealthy, the middle-income and poor countries.

PETALING JAYA: Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak has confirmed that he will be contesting a parliamentary and state seat in the next general election (GE15) in the state.
He said besides the Tambun parliamentary seat held by youth and sports minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu, the Kuala Kangsar seat held by Barisan Nasional’s Mastura Mohd Yazid, who is also a deputy minister in the prime minister’s department, is an option.
“There were suggestions for me to contest against Faizal but the party has to make the final decision.
“I will challenge any political heavyweight, except the Bagan Datuk incumbent Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is Umno president, as he is considered too strong,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Bar has passed a motion calling for MPs and assemblymen to step down after switching to other political parties.
Bar president AG Kalidas said lawyers voted in favour of the motion during their extraordinary general meeting (EGM) today.
“We also call on the government to enact laws that give people the right to remove the assemblymen or MP due to loss of confidence in them,” he said.
Kalidas said the EGM also approved two other motions to increase the composition of Bar Council members from 12 to 16 as well as calling on the country to recognise and respect children’s rights.
“Children should not be discriminated against just because he or she was not conceived or born from a legally registered marriage,” he said.
