Reveal VIPs, companies involved in 5G contract, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: The government needs to explain the actual cost of the 5G telecommunications service as the cost seems to keep going up, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the figures quoted range from RM11 billion to RM15 billion and even RM28 billion and asked for clarity as it will be the rakyat who will have to pay the bill.
“We need to know why a company is chosen. And why is the cost going up?
“The rakyat are suffering, people are without jobs, schools without facilities and there are not enough laptops but we want to spend billions (on 5G),” he said while debating the 2022 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat.
Anwar said the tender process should have been transparent and people must know “which company has been given the tender and which agent or VIP is involved”.

Suicide watch: authorities urged to ‘control access to means’ after high-rise deaths

GEORGE TOWN – This month alone saw three deaths at high-rise buildings in Penang, two involving suicides and one an accident.
Rather than sweeping these incidents under the carpet, experts are weighing in on them, prompting high-rise building management and operators of the two Penang Bridges to exhibit helpline numbers at strategic locations around their facilities.
“The numbers may prompt those suffering from depression to think twice before they attempt to end their lives,” Sneham Malaysia president Datuk Florence Sinniah said.
Florence told The Vibes that operators of such places where suicides generally occur should help the authorities “control access to the means”.
“We cannot totally prevent unfortunate deaths, but we can at least step up the efforts to remind those suffering from depression that help is always available.”

Adly the best man for CM post, says Melaka PKR chief

MELAKA: Former Bukit Katil assemblyman Adly Zahari is the best man to lead Melaka, according to state PKR chief Halim Bachik, who cited the former chief minister’s performance during his 22 months leading the state.
In an interview with FMT, Halim said Adly performed very well during his short-lived tenure, adding that the Amanah vice-president was well-supported both in his Pakatan Harapan administration and at the grassroots level.
“In essence, we do feel that Adly is the best man for the job,” he said, though he maintained that PH’s choice of chief minister would be finalised later by the coalition’s top leaders.
“We need to take over the state government first at the state polls before we make a decision, and the decision will be made by the central leadership, not at the state level.”

Tengku Zafrul’s missed ‘golden opportunity’ for changes

PETALING JAYA: The 2022 budget was a missed “golden opportunity” to make real changes, noted economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram told a public forum today, while an MP said budget proposals should come under greater parliamentary scrutiny.
Jomo, a noted economist and former government adviser, said the missed opportunity was “something quite sad”.
The 2022 budget, being a pre-election budget, was the perfect time for finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who is not an MP, to reduce the political elements in government budgets, he said.

Taliban supreme leader makes first public appearance

KABUL – Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada has made his first ever public appearance, officials announced today, after he addressed supporters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar.
Akhundzada has been the spiritual chief of the Islamist movement since 2016 but has remained a reclusive figure, even after his group seized power in Afghanistan in August.
His low profile has fed speculation about his role in the new Taliban government – and even rumours of his death.
Yesterday, he visited the Darul Uloom Hakimah madrassa to “speak to his brave soldiers and disciples”, according to Taliban officials.
There was tight security at the event and no photographs or video have emerged, but a ten-minute audio recording was shared by Taliban social media accounts.
Akhundzada – referred to as “Amirul Momineen” or commander of the faithful – gives a religious message.
The speech did not touch on politics, but sought God’s blessing for the Taliban leadership.
He prays for the Taliban martyrs, wounded fighters and the success of the Islamic Emirate’s officials in this “big test”.
Akhundzada was appointed leader of the Taliban in a swift transition of power after a 2016 US drone strike killed his predecessor, Mullah Akhtar Mansour. – AFP, October 31, 2021

How did a non-issue become so controversial, asks Ramkarpal

PETALING JAYA: The government should educate those who are misinformed instead of further contributing to the “Timah” controversy, says DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh.
In a statement, Ramkarpal said this controversy ought not to have happened in the first place as it indicated sheer ignorance on the part of the government, adding that a non-issue had been turned into an issue for some reason.
“It is most unfortunate that the issue has escalated into what it is with the whisky manufacturer now considering changing the name of its product after pressure to do so from various quarters, including the relevant ministry,” he said.
Ramkarpal added that he failed to see how the Malaysian-made whisky could cause confusion or touch on religious sensitivities as it was clearly related to the tin mining industry in Perak and the person depicted on the brand was a British officer during British colonial rule in Malaya.
“With so much spotlight on Timah recently and the numerous explanations that have surfaced to explain that it has no connection with any religion, it is difficult to understand how anyone can be confused as to what it means.

Being disadvantaged is familiar territory: Pakatan hopeful of capturing Melaka

KUALA LUMPUR – A ban on physical activities related to the Melaka election does not seem to bother Umno and Bersatu one bit, as top party leaders make their way down to the tourist-magnet coastal state a full week ahead of nomination.
Pakatan Harapan (PH), on the other hand, intends to continue playing it by the book, and appears unperturbed by the inroads made by its political rivals.
But will the “law-abiding” coalition find itself at the losing end come polling day on November 20?
This will not necessarily be the case, going by the assessment of PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, who said the component parties within PH are already accustomed to contesting at a handicap.
“Will it be unfair to PH? Yes. But in all our experience going into a competitive election, whether under Barisan Alternatif, Pakatan Rakyat, or now PH, we have always operated in spaces where we are at a disadvantage.
