KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition MPs’ attempt to march from Dataran Merdeka to Parliament was short-lived, as Federal Reserve Unit personnel armed with riot shields blocked them from going further.
The MPs had earlier gathered at Dataran Merdeka to begin their march to Parliament at about 10.20am to protest against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his Cabinet, calling for their resignation.
Shouts of “Hidup Rakyat” and “Daulat Tuanku” rang from the group of MPs, who on a number of occasions had to speak to the police to allow the march to proceed.
But they did not manage to enter the Parliament grounds as FRU personnel blocked the entrance to Jalan Parlimen from Dataran Merdeka.
The MPs and their supporters eventually dispersed at about 10.40am, with some returning to Dataran Merdeka, as the FRU officers urged all those gathered to leave.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Kelantan has taken a firm stand in asking Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign, further expressing unhappiness over the government’s move not to seek consent from the King before revoking the emergency ordinances (EOs).
State Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said they will defend the King in accordance with the principles and goals as specified under the party’s constitution.
He said the failure to follow the King’s decree is tantamount to a form of rebellion, which has even led to the King issuing a statement to explain the chronology of events to “justify his position to the prime minister”.
Ahmad Jazlan was referring to the July 26 Palace statement that the government did not seek consent to revoke the emergency ordinances.
On July 29, the Prime Minister’s Office insisted that the ordinances were revoked according to the Federal Constitution.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — Opposition federal lawmakers gathered at the Merdeka Square this morning in a symbolic protest against the authorities’ move to shut and adjourn the special Parliament sitting amid mounting pressure for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign.
Today’s protest, attended by all Opposition MPs, including those not from the major political bloc Pakatan Harapan, comes as top leaders of the Perikatan Nasional administration face growing calls to step down.
Muhyididin’s government was admonished by the palace last Thursday in a rare royal rebuke that took aim at de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, who was accused of lying and revoking six ordinances enacted under the Emergency without the Agong’s assent.
At the time of writing, the MPs are planning to march towards the Parliament gates.

The head of the august House of Representatives in Parliament is the Speaker. Of course, the institution was something handed down to us by the British. Boy, based on the behaviour of the ones who once were or are Speakers, I believe the name is a misnomer.
Sometimes, I wonder if the translators of our Federal Constitution and early laws did the right thing in calling the Speaker the “Yang di-Pertua”. Translated, this normally is referred to as “President” in English when it comes to the Malaysian context.
This may be a coincidence but from the time Barisan Nasional has been calling the shots, the Speakers of our Dewan Rakyat have been behaving more like presidents of bodies and organisations, calling the shots according to the wishes of those who appointed them.
They never spoke up for the underdogs, resulting in a couple of them being questioned if they were the government’s lapdogs.

PETALING JAYA: The director-general of health must answer for recommending the suspension of parliamentary meetings for two weeks, an MP said today, especially as the “CT value” cited had never been used as an indicator for public health measures.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the indicator used by director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah was not logical, and there is no reason that Parliament cannot continue to function, four days after Covid-19 cases were detected.
“Please show us hard data and not just give general statements and justify,” he urged the health DG.
Noor Hisham said earlier today that the health ministry had recommended that all parliamentary meetings be suspended for two weeks, citing high infectivity rates after a Covid-19 outbreak was detected on Thursday.
He said the “CT value” or the cycle threshold (a measure of how soon after an RT-PCR test that the virus is detected in a sample) of the samples taken during screenings at the Parliament was low, indicating higher viral load and higher risks of spread.

Parliament reconvened last week and as rumours spread about tensions between the Palace and the prime minister, Malaysians were left wondering if anything will change.
A return to the trappings of democracy with or without a state of emergency, or the formation of a unity government, is not the need of the moment. Malaysia simply needs a revolution that ushers in competence and integrity in leadership and public institutions.
Malaysia does not need a unity government to tackle the multifaceted crisis it now faces – it needs saving by apolitical and competent professionals with the highest standard of integrity.
A unity government is typically formed when all political parties decide that in the interest of the country they should join forces during a national emergency, regardless of their differences, in order to restore normality.

Many Malays were euphoric when Muhyiddin Yassin gained power. We were told to be patient and give him a chance to prove himself.
Almost 18 months later, he has failed Malaysia.
Instead of surrounding himself with competent Cabinet ministers, he retained many of the deadwood from previous administrations. He enlisted men and women who lacked integrity, who had no dedication to hard work, who lacked attention to detail and were incompetent.
The previous Pakatan Harapan administration was riddled with infighting and was slow to institute reforms. Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) is no better. Its leaders are busy clashing with each other, and holding secret meetings to plot their political futures.

PETALING JAYA: It is only fair that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong invite opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to form a new government, former minister Zaid Ibrahim said.
“This is what most democracies ala Westminster style will do,” the former de facto law minister said in a statement today.
Citing his sources, he said 12 Umno MPs had already given their support to Anwar.
This was despite deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob insisting that 40 BN MPs were supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
He added that the King could appoint almost anyone to be the next prime minister so long as he was satisfied that he had the support of the majority of the MPs.

'Let Parliament Vote On The SOE, That's An Order'! What The King Has Told Moo - EXCLUSIVE!
According to a leaked letter apparently sent from the Istana Negara yesterday to Malaysia’s embattled prime minister the Agong has responded with a furious challenge to his Prime Minister, following Mahiaddin’s defiant statement yesterday afternoon insisting the King must follow the Cabinet advice and accept its decision to revoke the State of Emergency without a vote in Parliament.
The emergence of the private letter from the King to his Prime Minister just hours after it was sent represents a dramatic further escalation of the Constitutional Crisis in Malaysia and has pitched the King now squarely behind the rights of Parliament to decide on the future of the PN government.
Mahiaddin had been responding to a public statement made earlier in the day by the King, in which the monarch revealed his ‘sadness’ that Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan had “misled Parliament” on 26th July with his surprise announcement that the State of Emergency had been revoked the previous week (backdated to 21st July).
The King pointed out that he had not signed off on this decision and that had to the contrary told Takiyuddin and Muhyiddin that he expected the matter to be tabled, debated and voted on by MPs.
The PN government responded to the publishing of that statement by immediately suspending Parliament half way through its sitting (on the usual excuse of Covid) and ministers had then retired to Mahiaddin’s own house before issuing their public rebuttal telling the King he must comply with their Cabinet decision.

PETALING JAYA: Ahmad Faizal Azumu should advise his party president Muhyiddin Yassin to have his support tested in Parliament, just as the former Perak menteri besar had done in November, says an MP.
Ipoh Barat MP Wong Kah Woh was responding to reports of the Bersatu deputy president denying that Parliament was postponed due to fears of the government’s stability, saying he “cannot be more wrong”.
“It is clear that Covid-19 was only used as an excuse for the prime minister to hide from having a parliamentary sitting on Monday, despite the fact that the government had already arranged for a five-day sitting well designed not to have any session for voting,” he said in a statement.
According to him, Faizal was “definitely a better man” compared to Muhyiddin as the former menteri besar had not blocked a motion of confidence against him in the Perak state assembly last year.
“He may have lost that confidence vote and resigned, but he has marked himself as the first Perak menteri besar who was daring enough to face a confidence vote in the state assembly.”
