I had 114 MPs, too, but didn’t get same chance as Ismail Sabri: Dr Mahathir

LANGKAWI – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is perplexed as to why he was not allowed to show proof that he had the necessary parliamentary numbers last year when the Sheraton Move was executed by Bersatu leaders to take over the government.

He said he was not even invited to show the MPs’ support he had garnered as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was quickly appointed prime minister.

“That was a decision made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. I don’t know why,” said the 96-year-old Langkawi MP.

“I had the support of 114 MPs and I should have been allowed to form the government.

“I should have led the government, but Muhyiddin was appointed and I wasn’t given a chance to make a presentation. So, he became the prime minister.”

Dr Mahathir, who is now Pejuang chairman, said this yesterday during a constituency visit to padi farmers at Kg Telok Ulu Melaka here.

Report: Muhyiddin to decide Bersatu nominees for PM Ismail’s Cabinet
Posted by: superadmin - 08-24-2021, 12:43 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) appears to be confident that it will have representation in the new Cabinet led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who is from Umno.

Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Razali Idris said the party held a meeting recently and gave its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin full mandate to decide who among its members to nominate for a Cabinet position, Sinar Harian reported today.

“I think Muhyiddin’s relationship with Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is really close.

“We leave it to Muhyiddin to decide whether to change the old minister or to replace the new one, we give him a mandate,” Razali was quoted as saying.

He related that Ismail visited Muhyiddin at his house and had a discussion with his predecessor on the same day he was appointed prime minister.

US car makers hit by Malaysian chip shortage
Posted by: superadmin - 08-24-2021, 12:35 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Covid-19 infections in Malaysia is threatening to aggravate shortages of semiconductors and other components that have hammered automakers for months.

Malaysia has not historically had the kind of importance to technology supply chains that Taiwan, South Korea or Japan do. But in recent years, it emerged as a major centre for chip testing and packaging, with Infineon Technologies AG, NXP Semiconductors NV and STMicroelectronics NV among the key suppliers operating plants there.

Now Covid-19 infections are soaring in the country, jeopardising plans to lift lockdowns and restore full production capacity. The seven-day average for reported daily infections has pushed past 20,000, up from just over 5,000 in late June, although the number of reported infections dropped to 17,672 on Aug 23.

New govt, same disregard for SOPs, claims Kula
Posted by: superadmin - 08-24-2021, 12:31 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has come under fire barely a few days in the hot seat after a picture surfaced online of him allegedly flouting SOPs in a meeting with Umno leaders.

The picture, which is speculated to have been taken in Kedah during his trip yesterday, showed Ismail chairing a meeting with Umno leaders, with little physical distancing among those seated at the table.

Among those present were Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid and Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, both pictured not wearing masks.

Posting the photo on Twitter, user @La_FarEast asked if it was now allowed to hold meetings like this, tagging the health ministry in his post.

PM’s first task – getting right people for right job, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 08-23-2021, 09:48 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: banjir-yan-ismail-sabri-bernama-230821-1.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet line-up must have competent people who know their portfolios and are also able to include all communities in Malaysia, political analyst Bridget Welsh said today.

She added that it was especially critical to have competent candidates in key ministries such as finance, health and social welfare.

“The people appointed must know what they are doing but need not necessarily be experienced in that position. The issue is rebranding and creating a much more coordinated government.

“Therefore, in this regard, the Cabinet needs fewer people but with the right individuals in the right job,” she said on Bernama TV’s Midday Update programme, here, today.

The 30-minute discussion, which highlighted the appointment of Ismail as the country’s ninth prime minister and the National Day celebration, was hosted by Jessy Chahal.

Welsh said the Cabinet formation would be the first major test for Ismail as he has to manage the dynamic relationship with Bersatu, the different factions within Umno, GPS and also offer some concrete measures to the opposition.

China reports no new local Covid-19 cases for first time since July, as Delta outbreak wanes

[Image: 210823023343-shanghai-neighborhood-lockd...ge-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN)China reported no new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases on Monday for the first time since July, according to its National Health Commission (NHC), as authorities double down on the country's stringent zero-Covid approach.

China has been grappling with the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant since July 20, when a cluster of Covid-19 infections were detected among airport cleaning staff in the eastern city of Nanjing.

Since then, it has spiraled into the worst outbreak China has seen since 2020, spreading to more than half of the country's 31 provinces and infecting more than 1,200 people. The surging cases driven by Delta were seen as the biggest challenge yet to China's uncompromising zero tolerance virus policy.

Local authorities responded by placing tens of millions of residents under strict lockdown, rolling out massive testing and tracing campaigns and restricting domestic travels.

The strict measures appeared to be working. Daily infections have fallen steadily over the past week into single digits, down from more than 100 from its peak two weeks ago.

From 'air-pocalypse' to blue skies. Beijing's fight for cleaner air is a rare victory for public dissent

[Image: 210822234117-beijing-downtown-file-0730-exlarge-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN)Beijing was once known as one of the world's most polluted cities, with dense smog and acrid air a daily reality for residents.

Now, its skies are mostly blue — a sign the Chinese capital is entering a new era of clean air, the country's Minister of Ecology and Environment claimed last Wednesday.

"The 'Beijing blue' has gradually become our new normal," said Huang Runqiu, the minister, according to state-run tabloid Global Times, as the city recorded its best monthly air quality since records began in 2013.

Though Chinese cities have long topped global rankings of the world's worst air quality, they have shown steady improvement over the years. Beijing only recorded 10 days of heavy air pollution last year, Huang said — a drop of nearly 80% since 2015. Recent photos from Beijing show clear blue skies and summer sun, once a rarity in the city of approximately 21 million.

Bersatu in ‘big trouble’ with Ismail as PM, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 08-23-2021, 06:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: GPS-Gabungan-Parti-Sarawak-Bernama_1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu is in “big trouble” now following Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s appointment as the nation’s ninth prime minister, an analyst predicts.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said this was because Bersatu no longer controlled the office of the prime minister.

“I suspect that once the government is stabilised, Umno will likely spend energy and resources to either absorb Bersatu or destroy it in the next general election,” he said in an interview with Astro Awani tonight.

Chin also said the next general election could be held in the second half of next year.

“So, he (Ismail) will have a few months of a ‘honeymoon’ where no one will disturb him.”
