MP SPEAKS | On 'stupid' policies and SOPs |

MP SPEAKS | In his public address yesterday on television and through social media, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that it was okay for the public to scold “stupid prime minister”.
I’m not sure if the PM was trying to score sympathy points with the public but I don’t think this is an appropriate public response to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia. Please don’t blame the public for being frustrated if the policies or standard operating procedures (SOPs) announced by certain ministers are seen as “stupid”.
For example, in the latest tightening of the movement control order (MCO) 3.0, the following three policies do not make sense to me and probably to the larger public as well.

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian-American mechanical engineer, Guruthisvaran Ramu, has offered to give a breathing support device free of charge to countries affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The device, named EcoFlo, is a low-cost continuous positive airway pressure device intended for Covid-19 patients to cope with breathing difficulty at home, in transit to hospital, and while awaiting treatment in the triage room.
He said EcoFlo will help avoid the need for full ventilation, is non-invasive and would free up ventilators in intensive care units for the critically ill. “An ICU ventilator usually requires the patient to be intubated, while EcoFlo can be used to keep airways open using air pressure,” said Guru.
“I would like to hand out the units to hospitals and medical staff at no cost to them,” Guruthisvaran (Guru), 34, said in an email interview.

Shocking description of Malaysia in CIA website |

While doing some fact-checking for a recent story on Malaysian terror suspects in Guantanamo, I checked out the US Central Intelligence Agency website’s country profiles.
I was keen to see how Malaysia is viewed by arguably the world’s foremost spy agency and by extension, the US government itself.
Governments around the world do not take the CIA findings lightly. Foreign investors doing due diligence on whether to invest in a certain country will take into account the CIA’s “pronouncements” of that country, and Malaysia is no exception to this mode of assessment.
I was in for a rude shock after reading how the CIA’s World Factbook rated the country in its Transnational Issues section. It was a damning report, albeit a blatant generalisation of the nation.
However, the report also carried some harsh truths.
Under the “current situation” of Malaysia’s status which was last updated on April 30 this year, it said:
“Malaysia is a destination and, to a lesser extent, a source and transit country for men, women and children subjected to forced labour, and women and children subjected to sex trafficking; Malaysia is mainly a destination country for foreign workers who migrate willingly from countries, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Nepal, Burma, and other Southeast Asian countries, but subsequently encounter forced labour or debt bondage in agriculture, construction, factories and domestic service at the hands of employers, employment agents and labour recruiters; women from Southeast Asia and, to a much lesser extent, Africa, are recruited for legal work in restaurants, hotels and salons but are forced into prostitution; refugees, including Rohingya adults and children, are not legally permitted to work and are vulnerable to trafficking; a small number of Malaysians are trafficked internally and subjected to sex trafficking abroad.”

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin defended the government’s decision of not implementing a full-scale lockdown as the first movement control order (MCO) implemented on March 18 last year almost led to a total economic collapse.
“At the time we had no prior experience (in dealing with a pandemic) so we closed down, even as the cases were not yet widespread. But the economic impact was considerable, verging on the point of collapse,” Muhyiddin said during a special talk interview session on RTM.
Speaking to moderators Terrence Dass and Wan Syahrina Wan Ab Rahman, he said the economy almost collapsed as it cost approximately RM2.4 billion a day during MCO 1.0.
“It is not just a matter of losing ringgit but of jobs as well, the inability to conduct business properly. The Health Ministry said this was the best move to prevent Covid-19 from spreading, but its effects on the country are another thing.

Report: Medical personnel must now show recipients syringe filled with Covid-19 vaccine before jab
KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — Medical personnel, who are assisting the Covid-19 vaccination effort under ProtectHealth Malaysia, are now required to show recipients the syringe filled with their Covid-19 vaccine prior to inoculation.
The directive was issued following allegations that some medical personnel had drawn less than the standard required amount of the vaccine during the AstraZeneca voluntary opt-in programme, leading to fears of underdosing.
News portal Malaysiakini stated that it had sighted a message informing all those tasked with administering the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to show the filled syringe to the recipient before vaccination as well as the emptied syringe afterwards.

PETALING JAYA: The government’s announcement of stricter measures to curb Covid-19 infections has led to social media users picking up and using the mocking hashtag #KerajaanBodoh.
The new hashtag comes in the wake of the earlier tag “#KerajaanGagal” which accompanied the views of those who felt the government had failed with the pandemic and in managing the country’s affairs.
Some 12,800 tweets have been posted under the new hashtag at press time, as social media users took to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with new rules under the movement control order.
