Don’t blame Anwar, find out what went wrong instead, says DAP leader |

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader says Anwar Ibrahim should not be shunned just because he could not get the numbers to become the prime minister.
Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said there must be critical appraisal by the opposition instead to ascertain what really went wrong and why the numbers were not there.
“Simply blaming Anwar for the political defeat might not be the wise thing to do. Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties must address the question of future leadership with a view to face the next general election (GE15),” he said in a statement today.
Ramasamy added that Anwar might have his detractors but he urged the people not to forget that without him, the opposition would not even be in a position to consider forming an alternative government.
“This is not the time for witch-hunting or putting the blame on one or two leaders. As far as I am concerned, Anwar is still the leader of the opposition. There is little difference between the number of MPs supporting Anwar and Ismail Sabri Yaakob,” he said.
Yesterday, the King announced that Umno’s Ismail Sabri got the support of 114 MPs in the race for the post of prime minister. He will be sworn in this afternoon.
Anwar could only muster the support of about 105 MPs.
Ramasamy said the opposition leader is not perfect and must be held responsible for some of the strategic and tactical errors in the recent past, adding that he should not have “counted the chickens before they were hatched”.
“Even at the present moment, it does not make sense why he trusted some of the Umno leaders for support, especially the court cluster.”
He said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad might think that Anwar lost because he has lost support but it is easy to say this now, especially coming from a person who refused to hand over the post to Anwar as promised under the former Pakatan Harapan government.
“Yes, Mahathir’s Pejuang might have supported Anwar, but it is a bit too late. Rather than cry over spilled milk, the opposition must seriously discuss its future plans.
“More importantly, it must strategise how to win the next general election. This includes who can be trusted and what kind of alliances need to be forged. No leader is indispensable,” he said.
As for Ismail Sabri, Ramasamy said one cannot expect wonders especially with the cabinet he is going to inherit.
“He was one of the persons who must be held responsible for not addressing the pandemic matter seriously.
“Let us wait and see whether Ismail Sabri is capable of providing the leadership to address both the health and economic problems.”

PETALING JAYA: Analysts see it as unlikely that any of the 114 MPs backing PM-designate Ismail Sabri Yaakob will change their stand in the vote of confidence that will be taken in the Dewan Rakyat.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and National Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir said Malaysia could thus be assured of a stable government for some time.
Speaking to FMT, they noted that the King had personally confirmed with the MPs their choice of Ismail.
Oh said Istana Negara’s explicit mention that 114 MPs were backing Ismail was a subtle warning to them to stay true to their word.
He said he did not believe they would dare cross the King.

UNASSUMING, uninspiring and lacking in charisma. These were some of the words used to describe Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he took over the premiership from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2003.
However, when Abdullah was finally given his chance in the spotlight, he stepped up and surprised everyone.
Dr Mahathir was a tough act to follow but Abdullah, in his own unassuming way, inspired hope, starting with his “saya kuli nombor satu” of the people pledge.
He put in place reforms in a lethargic and bureaucratic civil service including bringing in corporate leaders to improve the delivery service; he promoted national schools to enhance unity among the races; promoting Islam Hadari – a progressive brand of Islam that prioritises knowledgeseeking and moderation; allowing space for debate by loosening controls on the media and freedom of expression; defied political pressure to interfere in the sodomy case of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim where the latter was later found innocent and freed; established economic corridors and encouraged clean government by, among others, mooting the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
He stepped up to the plate and brought a breath of fresh air and the people resoundingly gave him their vote when Barisan Nasional (BN) won its most successful elections ever by over 90% – winning 198 of 220 seats.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 ― Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged for the coalition’s leaders, members and supporters to accept the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decision to appoint Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister.
In a statement yesterday, Anwar said the Opposition acknowledged that the decision conformed to the Constitution, and the concepts of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
“For the Opposition, this is our challenge to work harder to face the 15th general election (GE15). Let us together pray and put an effort so the Covid-19 pandemic crisis and economy will swiftly be rectified and tackled for the sake of the people,” the PKR president said.

PETALING JAYA: Newly-appointed Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will need someone new to lead the health portfolio and it should not be Dr Adham Baba, says a former deputy health minister.
Dr Lee Boon Chye said there are plenty of qualified individuals who can fit the role.
“He can appoint a professional outside of the political circle. This is a matter of public health,” Lee told FMT, adding that the public healthcare system must remain apolitical.
He also said the new government should look into further speeding up the vaccination rate and target the remaining 4.5 million people who remain unregistered.
There should also be a stronger contact tracing team to handle Covid-19 outbreaks, he added.

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been appointed Malaysia’s ninth prime minister – and the country’s third in as many years.
Istana Negara in a statement today said the appointment of the Bera MP was made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in accordance with Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the federal constitution.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 2.30pm tomorrow at the palace.
The appointment follows the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin from the top post on Monday, making for Malaysia’s shortest prime minister stint at 17 months.
Ismail Sabri’s appointment comes after a special meeting between the Agong and Malay rulers this afternoon.
The incoming prime minister will now look to focus his efforts on combating Covid-19, which has surged amid the political instability during the previous Perikatan Nasional administration.

Europe left exposed as Biden walks America away from the world stage |

London (CNN)When US President Joe Biden finally broke his silence on the chaos unfolding in Afghanistan, European allies who'd had high hopes for a reset in the transatlantic alliance were left dismayed.
Their disappointment was not at the contents of Biden's address, but the America First optics of the leader of the free world washing his hands of a global problem. The unilateral decision to withdraw seemed to somewhat contradict Biden's claim upon entering the White House that "America is back."
A crisis like the one unfolding in Afghanistan has, for some, hammered home the bleak reality that, without America, Europe's immediate ability to control its own destiny is limited.
From London to Paris, Brussels to Berlin, the sudden fall of Kabul shone a light on Europe's limited diplomatic heft, military capacity, and political stability.
Diplomats and officials all over the continent have privately expressed their sorrow that this is where we are: If the US says it's over, it's over.

Don’t suppress peaceful gatherings, says Amnesty after vigil arrests |

PETALING JAYA: A rights group has urged authorities to end the suppression of peaceful gatherings, saying Malaysians must not be silenced.
Amnesty International Malaysia executive director Katrina Maliamauv called for the revocation of the RM2,000 compound issued to each participant of last night’s candlelight vigil for Covid-19 victims at Dataran Merdeka.
She also called for the police to drop further investigations into the vigil under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and other laws.
“The heavy-handed arrests of participants in last night’s vigil are the latest in a series of abuses of power by the authorities,” she said in a statement.
“It is disingenuous of the police to claim the vigil participants were not arrested but merely brought in for ‘documentation’ when videos of them being forcibly dragged onto waiting police trucks clearly show otherwise.”

Court of Appeal maintains Malaysian mums’ lawsuit seeking citizenship for kids born abroad
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 ― The Malaysian government has failed for the second time in its attempt to quash a lawsuit by several Malaysian mothers seeking for their children born abroad to automatically become Malaysian citizens.
This follows a Court of Appeal virtual hearing held today on the government’s appeal to strike out an earlier judgment by the High Court to hear the merits of the case.
The unanimous decision was delivered by a three-member bench chaired by Datuk Hajjah Azizah Nawawi alongside Court of Appeal judges Datuk Abu Bakar Jais and Datuk Seri Mariana Yahya.
In welcoming the decision, the Association of Family Support and Welfare Selangor & KL (Family Frontiers) said this will allow the struggles of Malaysian mothers in their children’s citizenship rights to be heard at the KL High Court on August 24.

Graft a cancer that weakens democracy, rule of law, says judge in Isa Samad’s case |

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court judge who convicted former Felda chairman Isa Samad for corruption said graft is a serious crime as it has consequences to the people and the nation.
“Corruption disrupts economic growth and denies the right of the people to obtain efficient services. It is akin to cancer and weakens democracy and the rule of law,” Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who convicted Isa in February, said in his 400-page written judgment.
Nazlan said the court had taken judicial notice that corruption was getting worse and rampant compared to the past era.
He said public interest was the overriding factor in determining the measure of punishment and the sentence must reflect the seriousness of the charges.
In this case, he said, the amount was high and the crime was planned by the accused who held high public office.
