KUALA LUMPUR – After losing its prime minister, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the new administration led by Umno is still a Perikatan Nasional government.
Speaking to the press outside the PN headquarters in Publika, Faizal said this is because the majority of MPs who support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob are from PN while Umno’s Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition has 41 MPs.
“This is still a PN government. Our friend (BN) only has the support of 41 MPs,” he said after PN’s supreme council meeting here today. – The Vibes, August 22, 2021

Breaking Down the Issues: vernacular schools invaluable, potential game changers |

THE Education Ministry, in its Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, has said that it is committed to developing and implementing a transparent and equitable set of principles for the allocation of financial aid and other support for all school types.
All evidence to date – within Asean and internationally – shows that multiple language fluency in whichever country in the world is an asset not only to the individual, but to the business organisation as well as the nation that encourages it.
We are fortunate in that not only do we have a multilingual population. We also have the building blocks for a bilingual and even trilingual population in our national schooling system.
Our national education objective should be to ensure every Malaysian child receives the right educational resources and a fair share of opportunities from cradle to career. This is especially necessary if we are to cope with international competition in an increasingly globalised world.
Diversity and mastering more languages should be a key policy priority. Our government should view vernacular schools using different languages as a socio-economic resource for national development.
The government should also not be pressured to view a different medium of instruction to Bahasa Melayu as a hindrance to national unity.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob must avoid establishing a large Cabinet with too much “deadwood” from the previous government, say political analysts.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and Ahmad Fauzi Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) said a smaller Cabinet would be vital in inspiring confidence in the government.
The previous Cabinet under the Muhyiddin Yassin administration comprised 32 ministers and 38 deputy ministers. Ismail, who took office as prime minister yesterday, is expected to announce his Cabinet soon.
Oh said he hoped new ministers would be appointed for the health, home affairs, and international trade and industry portfolios.
“The previous ministers were seen by many as being either incompetent, ineffective or not neutral,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin has pointed out the irony of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s rise and fall from power because of betrayal.
“He came to power by betraying the people who voted for him and the Pakatan Harapan coalition in the last general election,” the former Bersatu Supreme Council member said.
But 17 months down the road, the very people Muhyiddin plotted with, the “hungry wolves of Umno” as Kadir describes them, turned their backs on Muhyiddin and withdrew their support for him, ultimately leading to his downfall.
Muhyiddin’s tenure as the country’s 8th prime minister ended last Monday when he resigned after losing majority support among MPs.
Subsequently, Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed prime minister with the support of MPs from Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN), GPS, PBS and several independents.

KUALA LUMPUR – Another Umno leader has dismissed the Perikatan Nasional government label, saying the current government should rather be called a mixed one.
Umno secretary-general and Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan posted on Twitter last night that the new government, led by Umno’s DAtuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, is not the previous PN administration.
“For me, this is not a Perikatan Nasional government but a mixed one comprising Barisan Nasional, PNl, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Parti Bersatu Sarawak (PBS).
“PN only has Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, Sabah Star – and not BN, GPS and PBS.”
He is not the only one fighting the PN label.

Hudud in M’sia? Look at my country now, warns Afghan refugee |

KUALA LUMPUR – Salim (not his real name) fled Kabul to Malaysia after Taliban-linked criminals threatened his family’s life and safety.
But now, he warns Malaysia not to adopt ideologies similar to those held by the Afghan militant group, which just took over the country after the United States’ abrupt exit following 20 years of war.
When told about the existence of a Malaysian-based Islamic political party that has pushed for the implementation of a strict hudud code of law, Salim advised the country to look no further than Afghanistan.
“I’m a refugee who loves Malaysia and has a deep connection with the country ever since my son was born here. I urge Malaysians to learn from the Afghan experience. Whatever happened there can happen anywhere.
“If there are those here that support similar ideologies with the Taliban, it is possible that Malaysia may face the same fate as Afghanistan,” Salim told The Vibes.

Not so bad for Bersatu to be out of Cabinet, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: With Bersatu no longer the dominant force in Putrajaya, an analyst believes it may not be a bad idea for the party to stay out of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government.
Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said Bersatu could be more vocal in providing a check and balance on the new government if party MPs were not part of the Cabinet.
“If they are part of the Cabinet, and we know decisions are made by consensus, it would be harder for them to be critical of the government and Umno if the new administration underperforms,” he said.
Yesterday, Bersatu denied an online portal’s report that said Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had proposed rejecting appointments to the new Cabinet.
The party’s information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the report which cited sources was ill-intended and aimed at creating divisions within the party.

Now, more than ever, we need Tunku Abdul Rahman |

PETALING JAYA: The nation’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, embodied deep-seated humility in an era of boundless Malaysian optimism.
The story of the man called Bapa Merdeka and Bapa Malaysia, as the architect of Malayan independence and the formation of Malaysia, teaches us many things about the type of people we wish to see in public office at times of deep challenge.
Perhaps, most of all, it shows us the importance of being humble: humility breeds empathy; arrogance yields division and failure.
In a series to mark the 64th anniversary of Merdeka, FMT has collected timeless photographs of the Tunku, who served as prime minister from 1957 to 1970, to give a taste of a man who was a symbol of unity, interracial peace and harmony.
