Patriot joins calls for action over ‘damaging’ Merdeka video
Posted by: superadmin - 08-25-2021, 09:36 AM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The National Patriots Association (Patriot) has joined the call for strict and immediate action to be taken against a Muslim NGO over a controversial Merdeka-themed video, which it branded as “racist”.

Patriot president Brig-Gen (Rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji said even though the video has since been removed, it had already gone viral.

“Such racist Merdeka videos destroy the past achievements by the government and the heads of states in building integrated communities of Malaysians.

“Immediate and strict action must also be taken by the relevant ministries,” he said in a statement.

Arshad also demanded for authorities to explain what action it would take against the producers to deter others from “damaging the fragile social landscape”.

Azmin’s aide slams media reports on ‘threats’ over DPM post
Posted by: superadmin - 08-25-2021, 09:28 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An aide to Azmin Ali has refuted reports suggesting that the former senior minister may retract his support for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob if he is not named deputy prime minister.

Muhammad Hilman Idham said news reports by Free Malaysia Today and Malaysiakini were an attempt to split the coalition that was backing Ismail and to destabilise Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Earlier today, in an article titled “Fears over confidence vote may swing DPM post to Azmin”, FMT reported that Bersatu and Umno leaders feared that Azmin might not back Ismail during a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if he was not appointed the country’s number two.

According to a source, if “Azmin does not get his way, he and his gang will most probably become independent candidates”.

Ismail Sabri’s Cabinet: Umno, Bersatu insiders disclose who’s being nominated for which posts

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is not keen on having a deputy, let alone one from political rival Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, party insiders divulged.

However, sources from both Umno and Bersatu told Malay Mail that Ismail may have little choice but to appoint one as it was among the conditions laid down by Bersatu in return for its support to his prime ministership last week.

And the Bersatu nominee for the DPM post is Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who has also been suggested to be put in charge of the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

“Azmin was suggested as DPM and MoF,” a Bersatu insider said on condition of anonymity.

Malaysian badminton fixer yet to be revealed in 15-year-old match involving Lee Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR – The latest bribery revelation by Indonesian ace player, Taufik Hidayat, in an interview few days ago has shocked the badminton world.

It was understood from a recent report by Go Sports that Taufik Hidayat had claimed that in 2006, a Malaysian badminton official had attempted to bribe him to lose the Doha Asian Games semi-final match against Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

This disclosure also shocked Chong Wei as he was not aware of the incident and the identity of the alleged culprit but after seeking clarification from Taufik Hidayat, he now knows who this person is.

The Indonesian star went on to beat Chong Wei and subsequently defeated China’s Lin Dan to secure the gold medal, which meant that it was a failed attempt by the alleged culprit.

Azmin as DPM? Mediocrity breeds mediocrity, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 08-24-2021, 08:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: mohamed-azmin-ali-ismail-sabri-bernama-030621-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Azmin Ali does not have the calibre to be a good deputy prime minister despite being said to be a frontrunner for the post – but his appointment would not be very surprising, says an analyst.

Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid said Azmin’s stint as international trade and industry minister left much to be desired, and cited reports of a clash between him and Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was senior minister for security then.

“Remember when Ismail left an enigmatic social media note of having done his best, only to be overtaken by later decisions?

“Having said that, mediocrity breeds mediocrity. When you get a mediocre leader like Ismail as prime minister, do you expect him to want someone of a higher calibre than him to become his deputy?

“Doing that would undermine his premiership,” he told FMT.

New Zealand records another 41 Covid cases as it braces for biggest outbreak of pandemic

[Image: 3786.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...e8c5f2762c]

New Zealand is bracing for its biggest coronavirus outbreak yet as cases rise, the locations of interest balloon to more than 400 sites, and the number of close contacts swells to more than 15,700 people.

On Tuesday, the country recorded 41 new positive cases, bringing the total number in its outbreak to 148 – the majority of whom are Samoan, and linked to a sub-cluster who assembled at the Assembly of God church in Mangere, Auckland before the lockdown.

A nationwide, level 4 lockdown – the highest setting – has been extended until at least the end of the week, as the country battles to contain the outbreak of the Delta variant.

Auckland – the country’s largest city, where the majority of cases have been detected – will remain in lockdown until the end of the month.

Of the 41 new cases, 38 are in Auckland, and 3 are in Wellington. Of the total 148 cases, 89 are epidemiologically linked to the Auckland cluster, with the remaining still under investigation, but likely to be linked because they are either household contacts or have been at a location of interest.

Eight people are in hospital with the virus, but no one is in intensive care.

Genome sequencing has linked the cluster to a returnee from Australia. It is not yet known how the virus was transmitted from the traveller, who was in quarantine, to the community, but a walkway and an atrium in the facility is being investigated.

Surprise us with a wiser cabinet, Mr Prime Minister – Vasanthi Ramachandran
Posted by: superadmin - 08-24-2021, 03:23 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210707_ismail_sabri_dpm_2_bernama.jpg]

LET us try to look at an old government with a new perspective. Let us forget about the process, especially the theatrical spins and how we got here. There is no point in being emotionally charged about our powerlessness in choosing our leader, especially now.

Who knows, there might be some unexpected pleasant surprises for us.

In the 2018 elections, we were yearning for goodness. We were patriotically charged, ready for a new beginning, and change for the better. Since then, we have witnessed the changing hands of three governments at great speed.

Not only are we back to square one, we have also inherited a new host of problems. Although this is not a crisis of our making, we are ones to nurse our wounds and move on.

Today, marginalised people are sliding down a slippery terrain – socially, economically and politically – and have raised the white flag.

It was against this backdrop that the ninth prime minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, was sworn in. It is no easy task for him. He already knows what he is up against. He knows the weaknesses of the previous government, as well as some good aspects of the accomplishments of his predecessor, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Malaysia, Philippines may see 46% fall in GDP due to climate change: report
Posted by: superadmin - 08-24-2021, 03:19 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

[Image: climate_change_twitter_pic_27012021.PNG]

GENEVA – “Climate change is here, we need to act now,” said the chief economist of Swiss Reinsurance Company (SwissRe), warning of sharp global economic losses.

The world’s economy, especially poorer countries, will pay the “highest price” if no action is taken on a global level, said Jerome Haegeli, also managing editor of a report published recently, in an interview with the Xinhua news agency yesterday.

Haegeli said his team concluded that the global economy might lose 10% of its global GDP by 2048 if temperatures rise at the current speed, with countries in the Global South more affected than in the North.

Countries in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and the Philippines, are “extremely vulnerable” to climate change, and could lose up to 46% of their GDP by the end of the century if temperatures increase by 3°C compared with the 1800s, said Haegeli.
