PM’s first task – getting right people for right job, say analysts

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet line-up must have competent people who know their portfolios and are also able to include all communities in Malaysia, political analyst Bridget Welsh said today.

She added that it was especially critical to have competent candidates in key ministries such as finance, health and social welfare.

“The people appointed must know what they are doing but need not necessarily be experienced in that position. The issue is rebranding and creating a much more coordinated government.

“Therefore, in this regard, the Cabinet needs fewer people but with the right individuals in the right job,” she said on Bernama TV’s Midday Update programme, here, today.

The 30-minute discussion, which highlighted the appointment of Ismail as the country’s ninth prime minister and the National Day celebration, was hosted by Jessy Chahal.

Welsh said the Cabinet formation would be the first major test for Ismail as he has to manage the dynamic relationship with Bersatu, the different factions within Umno, GPS and also offer some concrete measures to the opposition.

China reports no new local Covid-19 cases for first time since July, as Delta outbreak wanes

[Image: 210823023343-shanghai-neighborhood-lockd...ge-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN)China reported no new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases on Monday for the first time since July, according to its National Health Commission (NHC), as authorities double down on the country's stringent zero-Covid approach.

China has been grappling with the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant since July 20, when a cluster of Covid-19 infections were detected among airport cleaning staff in the eastern city of Nanjing.

Since then, it has spiraled into the worst outbreak China has seen since 2020, spreading to more than half of the country's 31 provinces and infecting more than 1,200 people. The surging cases driven by Delta were seen as the biggest challenge yet to China's uncompromising zero tolerance virus policy.

Local authorities responded by placing tens of millions of residents under strict lockdown, rolling out massive testing and tracing campaigns and restricting domestic travels.

The strict measures appeared to be working. Daily infections have fallen steadily over the past week into single digits, down from more than 100 from its peak two weeks ago.

From 'air-pocalypse' to blue skies. Beijing's fight for cleaner air is a rare victory

From 'air-pocalypse' to blue skies. Beijing's fight for cleaner air is a rare victory for public dissent

[Image: 210822234117-beijing-downtown-file-0730-exlarge-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN)Beijing was once known as one of the world's most polluted cities, with dense smog and acrid air a daily reality for residents.

Now, its skies are mostly blue — a sign the Chinese capital is entering a new era of clean air, the country's Minister of Ecology and Environment claimed last Wednesday.

"The 'Beijing blue' has gradually become our new normal," said Huang Runqiu, the minister, according to state-run tabloid Global Times, as the city recorded its best monthly air quality since records began in 2013.

Though Chinese cities have long topped global rankings of the world's worst air quality, they have shown steady improvement over the years. Beijing only recorded 10 days of heavy air pollution last year, Huang said — a drop of nearly 80% since 2015. Recent photos from Beijing show clear blue skies and summer sun, once a rarity in the city of approximately 21 million.

Bersatu in ‘big trouble’ with Ismail as PM, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 08-23-2021, 06:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu is in “big trouble” now following Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s appointment as the nation’s ninth prime minister, an analyst predicts.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said this was because Bersatu no longer controlled the office of the prime minister.

“I suspect that once the government is stabilised, Umno will likely spend energy and resources to either absorb Bersatu or destroy it in the next general election,” he said in an interview with Astro Awani tonight.

Chin also said the next general election could be held in the second half of next year.

“So, he (Ismail) will have a few months of a ‘honeymoon’ where no one will disturb him.”

Umno Youth chief proposes Tok Mat as new finance minister
Posted by: superadmin - 08-23-2021, 06:16 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 — Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki today proposed that his party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan be made finance minister, to aid the government’s welfare efforts for the people.

Taking to Facebook, Asyraf said that the candidate for finance minister should be picked from among those who understand the pulse of the people and their struggles.

“In order to realise the #TuntutanRAKYAT related to the moratorium, i-Citra, adding value to the people’s aid packages who are currently in a very difficult situation, anxious and stressful, requires a finance minister to be chosen from among those who are used to working with the people and understanding their pulse.

“I suggest for the prime minister to consider appointing Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan as the finance minister in the new Cabinet. Agree with this view?” he wrote.

Mohamad is the former Negri Sembilan mentri besar during Barisan Nasional’s (BN) reign and is currently his party’s election director. The Rantau state assemblyman is seen as a more moderate and progressive leader in Umno.

At the height of Umno’s leadership crisis in 2018 following its current president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s court charges, Mohamad led the party while Ahmad Zahid took leave to face court trials.

Conservative talk show host Phil Valentine dies after battle with Covid-19
Posted by: superadmin - 08-22-2021, 08:36 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 210723153007-phil-valentine-2019-file-me...us-169.jpg]

(CNN)Phil Valentine, a Nashville-based conservative radio talk show host who had questioned whether it was necessary for all people to get Covid-19 vaccines, died on Saturday, his employer, WWTN Radio, announced on Twitter. Valentine was 61 years old.

"Please keep the Valentine family in your thoughts and prayers," the station said in the tweet.

His death comes more than a month after the host first announced he had been diagnosed with Covid-19. On his program, Valentine had repeatedly downplayed the importance of getting a vaccine against the virus, saying last December that he believed his personal odds of dying from Covid-19 were "probably way less than one percent."

But his message changed in late July when his family announced that Valentine had been hospitalized in "very serious condition" and was suffering from "Covid Pneumonia and the attendant side effects."

"Phil would like for his listeners to know that while he has never been an 'anti-vaxer' he regrets not being more vehemently 'Pro-Vaccine', and looks forward to being able to more vigorously advocate that position as soon as he is back on the air, which we all hope will be soon," his brother Mark Valentine wrote on July 22.

Mark Valentine told CNN's Alisyn Camerota in a July 26 interview his brother was doing better but was "still very deep in the woods" and breathing with assistance.

"He recognizes now that him not getting the vaccination has probably caused a bunch of other people not to get vaccinated," he said in the interview. "And that he regrets."

I told you so, says Zahid as Umno seals return to power
Posted by: superadmin - 08-22-2021, 08:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ahmad-zahid-hamidi-ismail-sabri-yaakob-BERNAMA.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has pointed to a speech he made on Umno’s return to power three years ago, as he celebrated the party now holding the top position in government.

In a Facebook post, today Zahid reflected on the address he made during Umno’s general assembly in 2018, after the Barisan Nasional lost in the 14th general election (GE14) due to “slander”.

“We are always ready to lead the government if anything happens to the present administration,” the Bagan Datuk MP said.

“This was part of my speech during the Umno general assembly three years ago. What was said by the Umno president on that day has now become a reality today.”

Umno marked its return to leading the country following the removal of Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister last Monday, following weeks of a political impasse brought by the withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin by 15 Umno MPs.

Yesterday, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was sworn into office, securing his party’s reign over Putrajaya.

Zahid thanked Umno’s leadership, members, and supporters who had confidence in the speech he made during the assembly.

Cabinet needs shrinking, must comprise experts to manage crises: political analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 08-22-2021, 05:21 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 21082021_KUL-ismail-sabri-oath-istana-BERNAMA.jpeg]

GEORGE TOWN – Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob must prove his commitment to handling the health and economic crises by forming a small cabinet, said political analysts.

This comes as pundits have also taken note of the positive attitude displayed by Malaysia’s ninth prime minister, who wasted no time in immediately engaging the federal opposition after being appointed into office by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Too many chefs spoil the broth
Sivamurugan Pandian, a professor of political sociology at Universiti Sains Malaysia, told The Vibes that the cabinet has to shrink, as bloated as it was in the previous government.

“The first thing they must do is revisit the previous cabinet’s whole structure. It should be small and comprise quality members, and the rakyat will appreciate that because what matters most is quality, not quantity.

“Before, there were too many portfolios and ministries. Now I think the cabinet should be set up to manage the crisis,” he said.

Though the government needs a reputable, credible, and small cabinet comprising those with expertise, experience and who are also beyond political interests, Sivamurugan said he does not think a unity cabinet is currently possible.
