KUALA LUMPUR – The security advisory issued by Japan on potential attacks in Southeast Asia is most likely the result of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan that has led to a volatile situation among terror groups in the region.
Counterterrorism experts warned Putrajaya not to brush off potential threats to Malaysia, which has been identified by Japan as among the nations at risk.
Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies security studies Prof Rohan Gunaratna said the return of the Taliban to helm war-torn Afghanistan has galvanised militant groups al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
The analyst, who specialises in international terrorism, said it is vital that governments in the region nip the problem in the bud, before potential strikes take place.
Speaking to The Vibes, he said the Taliban’s swift return to power last month was celebrated by nearly 40 al-Qaeda-centric extremist groups globally.
The renewed alliance between the Taliban and al-Qaeda has created a highly charged environment as they compete with IS to conduct strikes, he said.
“Terrorist groups in Southeast Asia with ideological and operational links to al-Qaeda and IS pose a threat to the region’s governments and communities.

Tony Pua: Bipartisan cooperation MoU a way for PM to prevent kleptocrats’ return to power
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — The memorandum of understanding (MoU) affirming the bipartisan cooperation between the government and the Opposition gives Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob the freedom to ignore Umno members who are seeking to bring back to power those from the party who are currently on trial.
The DAP MP for Damansara Tony Pua said Ismail Sabri was under pressure to reinstate former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and current Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“By strengthening his position as the prime minister via the MoU, Ismail Sabri is now in a stronger position to push back any threats and demands by the Umno court cluster and kleptocrats, led by Najib Razak and Zahid Hamidi, who is also Umno president.
“On the other hand, had the MoU not been signed, Ismail’s hand would have been weakened and he would have had to give in to the demands of the kleptocrats.

PETALING JAYA: The government has gone to the Court of Appeal to set aside last week’s High Court decision that children born overseas to Malaysian mothers are entitled to citizenship by operation of law.
Attorney-General Idrus Harun in a text message to FMT said the notice of appeal was filed this morning.
Once the written judgment is made available, the government will file a memorandum of appeal to outline where the trial judge has erred in law and facts.
The High Court ruling last week came after six Malaysian women and the family support group Family Frontiers filed suit in December against certain provisions of the Federal Constitution which they said were discriminatory.
The provisions in the Constitution allow only the father to pass on his citizenship to his children born outside the federation.

People with long Covid feared to be at risk of developing dementia |

SINGAPORE - Weeks or months after they recover from Covid-19, some people continue to report poor concentration, memory difficulties and other cognitive issues, which experts fear may put them at risk of dementia years later.
There is also growing concern that some of these "long-haulers" may get the dementia-related changes earlier than expected.
The United Kingdom's National Institute of Clinical Excellence defines long Covid as having more than four weeks of symptoms after having Covid-19.
The Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), a federation of Alzheimer's associations around the globe, recently said that it had formed a working group of global experts to study the magnitude of the problem and make recommendations on how to deal with it.
It warned that the current pandemic could lead to a surge in dementia cases, and called for urgent research to be done on the link between long Covid and dementia.
Anything that diminishes a person's cognitive reserve and resilience is going to allow neurodegenerative processes to accelerate, said United States-based cognitive disorder neurologist Alireza Atri, who chairs ADI's 75-member Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel that is leading the research on this link. This can then cause symptoms of neurological disorders, such as dementia, to show earlier.

KUALA LUMPUR – The Yang di-Pertuan Agong today disclosed to Parliament that he received hundreds of letters from the rakyat sharing with him how their lives have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this regard, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah decreed that all MPs must put aside their agendas in the best interest of the people.
“Too many have been affected by the pandemic, and too many have lost their sources of income,” he said in his royal address at the opening of the fourth session of the parliamentary term in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The ceremony was also attended by members of the upper House.
“I received hundreds of letters from the rakyat, sharing their grief with a thousand hopes that they can achieve change to continue their normal lives.
“My advice to all members of the House: don’t ever gamble the country and rakyat’s future to achieve your own agendas.”
While the Agong did not mention names, the message appears to be in reference to the recent power struggle among politicians, which led to the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
This was following the withdrawal of support from more than a dozen Umno MPs.

PETALING JAYA: A leading pharmaceutical company which supplies the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine has called on the government to clear the air over the drug following claims linking it to breakthrough deaths.
Pharmaniaga Bhd said it was important for the authorities to provide a “solid explanation” as soon as possible to allay public fears as well as on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.
“(Otherwise) it could disrupt the government’s upcoming mission to vaccinate children aged between 12 and 17,” its group managing director Zulkarnain Md Eusope said in a statement today.
Earlier today, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country would be vaccinating teenagers in mid-September, involving those aged 12 to 15 who have comorbidities and those aged 16 to 17 with or without health conditions.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan will continue to hold the government accountable despite the two blocs set to sign a memorandum of understanding later today.
“This memorandum of understanding does not mean that Pakatan Harapan has joined the government,” said DAP organising secretary Loke Siew Fook.
“PH MPs will remain sitting in the opposition bloc and continue to play a ‘check and balance’ role to the government, continue to monitor and criticise the government’s weaknesses and remain vocal in the interest of the rakyat,” the former transport minister said in a Facebook post.
In a joint statement last night, representatives of both sides said they had agreed to work together in a bipartisan spirit to restore political stability while the government manages the Covid-19 pandemic and to help bolster economic recovery.
Loke explained that the MoU will detail PH’s cooperation with the government for any bills that need to be negotiated and agreed upon in principle, such as the federal budget.
