Too late for opposition to unite against BN, says Umno veteran
Posted by: superadmin - 03-14-2022, 11:11 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN – It is too late for non-Barisan Nasional parties to come together to oppose the ruling federal coalition, as there is just too much bad blood now among them.

In saying so, veteran Umno politician Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff highlighted a heartfelt plea made by Kelantan Pakatan Harapan elections director Datuk Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah, saying that it is poignant and points to a more effective two-party system for the country.

However, Yussof doubts that such a proposal would ever materialise.

Rahim had earlier called on all non-BN parties to come together in some form to counter the increasing political inroads being made by the ruling coalition.

He cited the two-thirds majority secured by BN in Melaka, Sarawak, and now Johor as an indication that nobody has a chance against the might of BN, unless they change their attitudes and come together to oppose the country’s oldest coalition.

Listen to both sides: Russians in M’sia defend Ukraine invasion
Posted by: superadmin - 03-14-2022, 10:30 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN – After almost two weeks of staying silent, some Russian nationals in Malaysia are defending the actions of those in their motherland, saying that while Moscow may be making progress in “demilitarising and de-Nazifying” neighbouring Ukraine, it is losing the media war.

Maria, who is part Ukrainian and Russian, told The Vibes that more people need to understand what led up to the recent invasion before taking sides.

“Right now, everyone is reacting according to what they see in the Western news channels and social media. Many have not heard Russia’s side or taken the initiative to learn the history behind this conflict.

“Russia is not against Ukraine, but the Ukrainian insurgent army that is funded by the West to threaten and instigate Russia.”

In her opinion, though many are only aware of the Russian military moving into Ukraine on February 24, the war started eight years ago and has been ongoing in the Donbas region.

She said Russian children born in the troubled part of Ukraine have been staying in bomb shelters until this day, but as the Western media did not report about that at length, the world remains ignorant of the situation.

Maria considers Ukrainians as part of the Russian family, as they share many similarities, from food to language. Many Russians in Malaysia are also married to Ukrainians.

However, since the conflict started, she has not started a conversation with her Ukrainian friends here because it is too sensitive to speak about.

Resign from Cabinet, Puad tells Bersatu ministers
Posted by: superadmin - 03-14-2022, 10:20 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin should relinquish his post after the party’s poor outing in the Johor elections, said Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

“Muhyiddin should resign from Bersatu because of its loss in the Johor elections. By right, Muhyiddin and the Bersatu ministers should resign from the government,” said Puad in a Facebook post.

“Muhyiddin attacked Umno and Umno ministers. Therefore, is it right for Muhyiddin and the Bersatu ministers to remain in a (federal) government led by Umno?”

The Perikatan Nasional coalition which Muhyiddin helms only managed to secure three of the 56 seats it contested – Bukit Kepong, Endau and Maharani.

Bersatu’s Dr Sahruddin Jamal and Alwiyah Talib won Bukit Kepong and Endau, respectively, while PAS’ Aziz Talib clinched Maharani.

6 fast-food chains that went extinct in Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 03-14-2022, 10:17 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: For better or for worse, it seems that fast food is a pillar of the local restaurant industry.

It’s quite understandable why – it’s tasty, it makes for a cheap treat and it’s, well, fast.

Surprisingly enough, the local fast-food scene is as old as Malaysia itself, with A&W being the first to open in 1963.

KFC followed suit, launching their first outlet in 1973 while McDonald’s opened their iconic Jalan Bukit Bintang outlet in 1982. Pizza Hut began operations that same year.

Even now, new fast-food chains continue to spring up with Taco Bell, Five Guys and most recently, Jollibee making landfall. That’s not even mentioning homegrown names like Marrybrown, KGB and BurgerLab.

While some fast-food chains have not only survived but thrived in this competitive industry, others have become distant memories.

Here are just a handful that have left little trace in local foodie history. Have you eaten at any of these places?

1. Shakey’s Pizza

At present, Pizza Hut, Domino’s and US Pizza are working hard to be at the top of the pizza market, but there used to be another player in the game.

Shakey’s Pizza was a very strong contender back in the ‘90s, possibly due to its early bird advantage.

Older customers might remember that the food was rather good, with the potato mojos being a favourite.

Shakey’s started operations in 1978, and for the following decades, it felt like there was a Shakey’s Pizza around every corner in the Klang Valley.

Unfortunately, with the emergence of other pizza chains, competition stiffened and by 2009, the last Shakey’s Pizza outlet shuttered for good.

Dr M’s criticisms of Najib don’t matter any more, say analysts

PETALING JAYA: The dismal performance of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Pejuang party at Saturday’s Johor elections indicate that his criticisms of his successor Najib Razak lack any bite, says an analyst.

Mahathir, who is the Pejuang chairman, had launched scathing attacks on Najib in a series of letters to Johor voters ahead of the elections. He had warned voters that his successor as prime minister was intent on regaining power in a bid to escape punishment for his role in the 1MDB scandal. In one letter,

Mahathir called Najib a “disgrace to his country, race and religion”

Johor polls: DAP to continue fight against unfair policies concerning livelihoods

Johor polls: DAP to continue fight against unfair policies concerning livelihoods, says Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in the aftermath of the Johor state election said that the party will continue to fight against policies concerning the livelihoods of the people.

The Bagan MP said that the party will ensure that they will serve their best in the 10 seats that they bagged yesterday.

“DAP accepts the verdict of the people and congratulates the victors. DAP hopes that promises made will be fulfilled. DAP and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will continue to defend the people’s livelihood by fighting rising prices, rejecting taxes of foreign-sourced income and opposing the excessive increase in compound fines for Covid-19 SOPs violations to RM10,000 for individuals and RM1 million for companies.

“For those 10 seats DAP has won, DAP will ensure that our elected representatives serve the people to the best of their ability to fulfil the trust given by the rakyat. For the four seats DAP lost, we will conduct a post-mortem,” he said.

Mat Sabu: Johor state election a reminder for Opposition to unite
Posted by: superadmin - 03-13-2022, 07:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — A day after the Johor state elections, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu called on the Opposition to take its loss at the polls as a lesson that it needs to reunite in preparation for the 15th general elections (GE15).

In a statement today, the Kota Raja MP — better known as Mat Sabu — listed the Opposition’s disunity as one the main reasons for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) win yesterday.

“To me, this result shows that BN did not increase in strength, instead they benefited from a clear split in the Opposition,” he said.

He also pointed out that taking into account all votes cast, non-BN parties had won over 200,000 more than BN.
