‘9/11 millionaires’ and mass corruption: How American money helped break Afghanistan |

- In the 20 years since 9/11, the United States has spent more than $2 trillion waging war and nation-building in Afghanistan.
- That money has helped create a tiny class of young, ultra-rich Afghans, many of whom made their fortunes as government contractors.
- But over time, these contracts helped fuel a system of mass corruption that engulfed the country and, eventually, doomed its fragile democracy.
WASHINGTON — $290 million every day for 7,300 days. That’s how much money America spent on 20 years of war and nation-building in Afghanistan, according to Brown University’s Costs of War project.
Yet it took just nine days for the Taliban to seize every provincial capital, dissolve the army and overthrow the U.S.-backed government in August.
When Taliban fighters seized Kabul without firing a single shot, President Joe Biden blamed Afghans for failing to defend their country.

The UN has condemned the Taliban for what its "increasingly violent response" to dissent, weeks after the group's rapid takeover of Afghanistan.
Taliban fighters killed four people during recent protests, the UN said.
Demonstrations have taken place across Afghanistan since the fall of Kabul on 15 August, demanding respect for women's rights and greater freedoms.
Taliban fighters have used batons, whips, and live ammunition against protesters, the UN said in its report.
"We call on the Taliban to immediately cease the use of force towards, and the arbitrary detention of, those exercising their right to peaceful assembly and the journalists covering the protests," a spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a press statement.

PETALING JAYA: Veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin has warned that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob could become a pawn to too many parties and interests due to his indebtedness to them for their support.
In a Facebook post, Kadir pointed out that Ismail could not completely ignore the “court cluster” and “kleptocrats” from his party, Umno, as they were the ones who helped overthrow former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and supported him instead.
“Therefore, I hope rumours of former prime minister Najib Razak coming back into the government is just part of some propaganda by the ‘court cluster’ and ‘Bossku’ gang to test where Ismail stands.
“This will be Ismail’s dilemma. If he succumbs to the pressure of the ‘court cluster’ and the ‘kleptocrats’, he will be nothing more than a servant and will be challenged,” he said.
He added that Muhyiddin’s rejection of these two groups of Umno leaders from returning to power deserved recognition despite he losing their support to lead the country.

TUMPAT: The belief that a cold climate is best suited for growing grapes has been proven wrong by Wan Yusoff Abdul Rahman, 37, who has been cultivating them in tropical Malaysia for two years.
The former graphic artist said the 60 grapevines planted around his house in Kampung Belukar, Wakaf Bharu near here can yield up to one tonne of fruit per month.
Anyone who visits his residence will be mesmerised by the range of colours of his grapes from varieties like Ninel, Jupiter and Dixon.
“Most of the varieties come from Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Korea. What is surprising is that they grow well here and are nearly as sweet,” he said of his foray into grape growing which started as a research and development project.
“There is no denying that people are attracted to my house because they want to see and taste the grapes.

KUALA LUMPUR – DAP Youth is calling for a motion in the Dewan Rakyat to overturn Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon’s move to reject motions filed by MPs to unseat the speaker.
Wing chief Howard Lee urged Bagan Datuk MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Umno president, to submit a “substantive motion” in accordance with Article 43 of the Standing Orders to overturn Rashid’s “unparliamentary and undemocratic ruling”.
Article 43 states that the speaker’s decision on any point of order shall not be open to appeal and shall not be reviewed by the House, “except upon a substantive motion moved for that purpose”.
It adds that such a motion shall not require more than two days’ notice.

As Parliament turns 62, Putrajaya’s 7-point transformation plan bodes well for Malaysia, say pundits
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — The Malaysian Parliament, which turns 62 today, will undergo a transformation, thus elevating its position as the country’s highest legislative body.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s announcement on the transformation of the Parliament and the government’s administration ahead of the Malaysian Parliament’s anniversary is like a ‘gift’ to the country, which is facing various challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Describing the transformation as offering a positive impact to the country’s political landscape, a political analyst, Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian, of Universiti Sains Malaysia, said it would further nurture the parliamentary democracy system in Malaysia.

Malaysia is a mess because the government is held to ransom by our Malay political masters and elites.
When Ismail Sabri Yaakob met former prime minister Najib Razak, on Sept 7, he updated his Facebook post with information that their discussions were focused on Najib helping him revive the economy and control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ismail said, “Najib is committed to contributing time, energy, and ideas as a team for the sake of Keluarga Malaysia.”
One imagines family members to consist of people who support, and love you, whom you can confide in, and trust.
Najib was convicted and sentenced to jail in July last year on seven charges of misappropriation involving RM42 million in funds linked to SRC International. He is on bail pending his appeal.
Since when do people knowingly accept kleptocrats to be part of the family? This version of Ismail’s “Keluarga Malaysia” sounds more like Keluarga Umno-Baru, which comprises kleptocrats.
