PETALING JAYA: After successfully launching an online donation app last year to help those financially affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, a teen programmer says he wants to convert it into a more permanent platform.
When 18-year-old Tong Jing Yen created Bersamamu – a free mobile app that allows Malaysians to give and receive donations such as food, clothes and books – he only managed to rack up around 270 downloads on Google Play Store.
Nearly a year later, he has helped over 1,000 users, with more than 100 requests and donations submitted by the community.
Tong said the number of users has since declined significantly as the country is slowly returning to normal after numerous lockdowns, but that does not mean it is the end of the road for Bersamamu.

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Annuar Musa says the time has come for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to be appointed the Barisan Nasional chairman.
This comes after Umno agreed to propose Ismail, who is a party vice-president, as its prime ministerial candidate for the 15th general election (GE15).
“As a prime ministerial candidate, Ismail must be given as much space as possible to establish a new administration,” said Annuar, the communications and multimedia minister.
He said Ismail should also be appointed the BN election director for GE15.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two lawyers have called for disclosure of the terms of an out of court settlement between the government and former attorney-general Apandi Ali over his sacking in 2018.
One of them, R Kengadharan, said confidentiality clauses would not apply as it was a public interest suit that involved Putrajaya and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad against Apandi.
He told FMT attorney-general Idrus Harun should reveal the outcome of the case since monetary compensation was involved.
The other lawyer, Syed Iskandar al-Mahdzar, said private individuals or corporate entities were entitled to settle defamation or contractual disputes as compensation would be paid from private funds.

Earlier today, the Umno Supreme Council decided that the MoU between the federal government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not be extended any further after it ends this July.

US causes humanitarian disasters around globe, killing innocent civilians and creating millions of refugees
Editor's Note:
Since the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine began, the international community has grown increasingly aware of the roles the US and NATO have played behind the crisis.
From lip service on the Ukraine refugee issue to a spotty overseas human rights record; from imposing sanctions on "disobedient countries," to coercing other nations to pick sides… the US has acted like a "Cold War schemer," or a "vampire" who creates "enemies" and makes its fortunes from pyres of war. The Global Times is publishing a series of stories and cartoons to demonstrate how the US, in its superpower status, has been creating trouble in the world one crisis after another. This is the sixth installment.

- The risk that the Federal Reserve accidentally tips the U.S. economy into recession as it combats inflation is rising, according to JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.
- “I’m simply pointing out that those are storm clouds on the horizon that may disappear, they may not,” Dimon said.
- In the event that a recession does develop, the bank would “have to put up a lot more” for loan loss reserves, Dimon told reporters.
The risk that the Federal Reserve accidentally tips the U.S. economy into recession as it combats inflation is rising, according to JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.
The CEO of the biggest U.S. bank by assets said Wednesday that economic growth will continue at least through the second and third quarters of this year, fueled by consumers and businesses flush with cash and paying off debts on time.
“After that, it’s hard to predict. You’ve got two other very large countervailing factors which you guys are all completely aware of,” Dimon told analysts, naming inflation and quantitative tightening, or the reversal of Fed bond-buying policies. “You’ve never seen that before. I’m simply pointing out that those are storm clouds on the horizon that may disappear, they may not.”

- In a biannual Joint Economic Forecast, published Wednesday, Germany’s biggest economic institutions reduced their GDP forecasts as the war in Ukraine slows the recovery from Covid-19.
- The RWI in Essen, the DIW in Berlin, the Ifo Institute in Munich, the IfW in Kiel and the IWH in Halle now expect German GDP to grow by 2.7% in 2022 and 3.1% in 2023.
- “If gas supplies were to be cut off, the German economy would undergo a sharp recession,” said Stefan Kooths, research director for business cycles and growth at the Kiel Institute.
German economists are forecasting a recession in Europe’s largest economy if Russian gas supplies were to stop, and the effects could spread through the continent.
In their biannual Joint Economic Forecast, published Wednesday, Germany’s five biggest economic institutions sharply reduced their gross domestic product forecasts as the war in Ukraine slows the recovery from Covid-19.
The RWI in Essen, the DIW in Berlin, the Ifo Institute in Munich, the IfW in Kiel and the IWH in Halle now expect German GDP to grow by 2.7% in 2022 and 3.1% in 2023, assuming that there is no further economic escalation related to the war in Ukraine and gas flows to Europe from Russia continue. The institutes had previously projected growth of 4.8% in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the European Parliament have called for the European Union to impose a total embargo on Russian oil, gas and coal imports in light of atrocities against civilians by Russian forces in Ukraine.
