PKR’s logo move a risky gambit in Johor polls, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 11:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s recent mauling in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections could be the reason for the party deciding to use its symbol instead of the Pakatan Harapan logo in the upcoming Johor polls, but it’s a strategy that analysts say may go wrong.

Azmi Hassan, a senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, said it was odd that the lead party in the coalition opted to use its own symbol while the other two use the coalition logo.

“If PKR says that it can attract more people especially the Malay voters by doing this, I don’t think the strategy is going to work. The party has actually put itself in a disadvantageous position by doing this.

“The leaders must understand that it was more than the logo that led to poor performance by PH parties in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections,” he told FMT.

Disunity among Opposition now normal, should resolve itself by GE15, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 11:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — The current disunity among the Opposition was not unusual and should resolve itself in time for the 15th general election, two political analysts said.

Political analysts Prof Kartini Aboo Talib @ Khalid and Prof Sivamurugan Pandian said the open disagreements among the allies likely suggested that a general election was near.

Despite the apparent disunity, they said political rivals should not discount the Opposition parties.

“Opposition seemed to be disunited during both the Sarawak and Melaka elections. However, they always put aside the differences during the general election,” Sivamurugan from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) said.

“Although Parti Warisan (Warisan) has been showing its interest to lead and become a strong viable alternative, it depends on who they will work with during polls. The other Opposition parties might also have their plans during the general election and they would not be easy to defeat if the people still want them as a strong alternative to avoid a big mandate,” he told Malay Mail.

In November last year, Barisan Nasional (BN) won the Melaka state election with a supermajority and comfortably formed the state government without needing any other support including from its estranged allies in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

To use, or not to use Pakatan’s logo for Johor polls
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 10:50 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 01122021PakatanHarapan-Rebrand-twitter.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – There are mixed reactions among Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders over which logo to use in the upcoming Johor election and this sentiment is shared by members in the state.

Former Perling assemblyman Cheo Yee How expressed hope that he will be able to contest the seat he won in 2018, but he will await the decision concerning candidacies from his party, DAP.

In the meantime, if he does end up contesting for the upcoming state polls, he would most likely end up contesting using the PH logo, while his colleagues in PKR contesting in other areas of Johor would use their own party logo.

When asked about his views concerning the coalition’s decisions on logos, Cheo hoped all component parties could contest under one single logo.

Stop misleading us on corruption perception score, says Santiago
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 10:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: wan-junaidi-charles-santiago-collage-290122-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar should not mislead the public on why Malaysia’s corruption perceptions index (CPI) has dropped, says an opposition MP.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said Wan Junaidi had “got it wrong” and that he needed to be more nuanced when addressing the increasing corruption in the country.

“In actual fact, if the government is investigating more corruption cases, the score will go up. Only when you’re trying to close those cases will (the index) begin to drop,” he told FMT.

Yesterday, Wan Junaidi said the decline in Malaysia’s CPI was due to wide publicity in the fight against corruption and the number of cases in court.

He said the recent crackdown on cases by enforcement agencies such as the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had led to an increase in the perception that corruption was rampant in the country.

Pak Jokowi, a working president with no pomp and fanfare

Quote:No Corruption

The third point is that he abhors corruption. He has taken many steps and issued many decrees in his efforts to eliminate corruption. Heavy penalties are imposed on those who take bribes. And the good news is, it works.

He identified the problem early on and worked tirelessly to strengthen the Anti-Corruption Agency (KPK) to fight those who were corrupt. He made KPK report to Parliament rather than to him. I think he is winning this long drawn-out war.

My current work scope in Indonesia allows me to travel extensively to the locations of toll roads that will eventually provide new links to some minor towns and new urban centres.

At the same time, it gives me the golden opportunity to meet with some of the more senior civil servants in various ministries, many of whom are close to the so-called corridors of power in Jakarta.

Knowing them and mixing socially with them partly through work has been fascinating. Not only do they value my professional opinions, but equally important, I get the chance to interact and understand them better, especially their oratorical skills and approach to planning and managing in Indonesia, a vast and diverse country.

My first important observation is how they all adore and admire their current president, who is the country’s huge driving force. They cannot imagine Indonesia without him.

Having been elected twice, Pak Jokowi is indeed a very popular president who drives the country forward and dictates which direction the country is heading, changing its course when necessary.

The second point that I must mention is that Jokowi is so well connected to the people at different levels. Despite the internal diversity of race, religion and ethnicity, Indonesia is very united under him.

Every time he makes a policy speech on certain subjects or a particular economic sector, he sounds like a subject matter expert and almost everyone can follow his narrative and understand his objectives and intentions.

Expect more from Bersatu to jump ship, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 10:01 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A Barisan Nasional leader and a political analyst say more Bersatu members will ditch the party closer to the Johor elections, and say those doing so are likely to be “political opportunists”.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said he expects more Bersatu members to quit following the exit of former Johor Bersatu chief Mazlan Bujang, now that the fortunes of Umno and Bersatu appear to have switched.

“It is the same cohort of politicians who ditched Umno for Bersatu when signs emerged during the 2018 general election that (former Umno president) Najib Razak was losing,” he told FMT.

Genting’s Lim Kok Thay blames Germany for cruise operator’s demise
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 09:59 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: Genting-owned-shipbuilder-MV-Werften-eme...0122-1.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: Lim Kok Thay, the former chairman of Genting Hong Kong Ltd, which slid into provisional liquidation last week, has accused the German government of walking away from a promise to provide capital to Genting’s shipbuilding unit, whose demise ultimately forced the cruise ship operator to seek court assistance to safeguard its assets.

As part of a restructuring deal last year, Germany’s former administration agreed to provide a US$620 million credit line to help MV Werften continue building a cruise ship called Global Dream, Lim said in a letter dated Jan 24 and viewed by Bloomberg News.

But when the new German government took office in December, an alternative arrangement that Lim described as “unreasonable” was proposed and a personal guarantee was sought.

The new German government also didn’t allow Genting Hong Kong to access crucial cash deposits after the Malaysian tycoon injected US$30 million as a prerequisite. The lack of funds ultimately forced the company to seek provisional liquidation, Lim said in the letter.

PH will be BN’s main rival in Johor, says Umno veep
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 09:42 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

JOHOR BAHRU: Pakatan Harapan, rather than Bersatu, will be Barisan National’s main challenger in the coming Johor state elections, says Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin.

Khaled said Bersatu did not have the structure and mechanism of a grassroots party despite its president Muhyiddin Yassin having previously been in Umno.

“Perhaps this is why Muhyiddin is not contesting this round,” he told FMT.

“For Umno, the strongest challenge will be from PH. However, I believe Bersatu leaders who are in the government will use all their resources to compete against us in the state elections,” he said.

Khaled said Umno and BN were confident of their chances because of PH’s failure to govern the state well for 22 months, pointing out that it had changed its menteri besar twice in that period.
