LOS ANGELES – Action hero Bruce Willis, star of the 'Die Hard' franchise, is to retire from acting after developing a cognitive illness, his family announced on Wednesday.
A post on Instagram said Willis had aphasia – a language disorder that robs people of their ability to communicate.
"Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities," read the post.
"As a result of this and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him."
Aphasia is typically caused by a stroke or head injury – though in more rare cases can come on gradually and progressively.
The condition affects a person's ability not just to speak and understand verbal communication but also their reading and writing.

Xi to meet EU leaders virtually at key summit, to inject positive energy to world amid Ukraine crisis
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to meet EU leaders at the China-EU leaders' meeting on Friday during which the Ukraine crisis is expected to be one of the major topics, some Chinese experts said.
They also believe that China and Europe could find more common ground in handling the issue and not let the differences override the fundamental course of China-EU relations, considering the consensus reached by the two strategic partners and larger scope of global affairs that need the cooperation between them.
President Xi will meet EU leaders by video link on Friday, including European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Premier Li Keqiang will co-chair the meeting with Michel and Ursula von der Leyen via video, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, announced on Wednesday.

Is your MP on the list? Ahead of Anti-Party Hopping Bill, a look at reps who jumped ship since 2018
KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Today, the government and leaders from the Opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH) will meet to finalise the Anti-Party Hopping Bill that is hoped to be tabled in Parliament on April 11.
The calls for such a law to regulate the movement of elected representatives have grown louder in recent months, especially as Malaysian politics went through a roller-coaster ride since the Barisan Nasional (BN) was replaced by PH in May 2018.
Two changes in governments. PH has now included the law as part of a deal with the current government led by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob — which many observers see may stave off Malaysian voters’ apathy and loss in trust in democracy which has resulted in lower and lower voter turnouts in recent snap elections.

MOSCOW – The Kremlin yesterday played down hopes of a breakthrough following peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegates in Istanbul a day earlier.
“We cannot state that there was anything too promising or any breakthroughs,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“There is a lot of work to be done,” Peskov said.
He added that Moscow considered it “positive” that Kyiv had started outlining its demands in writing.
“We carefully avoid making statements on the matters” that are discussed at the talks because “we believe that negotiations should take place in silence,” he added.
Moscow’s lead negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, described talks in Istanbul on Monday as “meaningful”.
A defence official at the talks said Russia would be significantly reducing its military activity near Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the city of Chernigiv.

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s newly elected secretary-general Loke Siew Fook admitted that ties between his party and Warisan are tense at the moment.
Speaking at an online forum titled “Anthony Jawab Jujur”, Loke highlighted the recent Johor elections, where Warisan adopted a “confrontational approach” by contesting in seats that DAP had won in the last general election (GE14).

BlueJaguar0861: The Sheraton Move was a significant setback for Anwar. No one should trust the traitor (Azmin) who initiated the move that broke the trust people had in Anwar and PKR.
Rafizi and Nurul must revive that trust. No one will ever trust Azmin anymore. All Malaysians must come together as one and remove all corrupted politicians.
The Wakandan: “This does not mean that Malay voters are any more racist than others, as all are guilty in roughly equal measures of racism.”
True. This is the hard talk. There are not many multiracial countries in the world with different ethnic groups practising their culture, language and religion distinctly. In this sense, Malaysia is rather unique.
Politics is always to garner support and the easiest way to do that in Malaysia is for each race to appeal to its own race. Any others come second.
There is no perfect formula but our forefathers in their simple way saw fit to form parties that mirrored this. Different parties for the different races then formed a coalition or an alliance.
Thus, we had Umno, MCA and MIC respectively for the three major races in Malaya. That seemed to work, for a while at least.
However, the dominant party began to up the ante, to get more support and benefit. Then things began to get awry. That’s what we have today.
PKR tried to do away with racial politics. They can only be supported by the minority races who lost out in a racial party system and the dominant race (Malays) who saw its failure. As long as that holds true, PKR would still get their support.
However, once that status quo is shifted, then by the same token, the support would be lost too.
PKR’s feature has shifted because Anwar changed his outlook in order to cater for the support of the dominant race. He flirted with the usual racism and religious factors.
Currently, more importantly, both factors – PKR multiracial appeal and BN’s failure – are not there anymore. The pre-GE14 scenario is less conspicuous now.
That’s the reason PKR lost its relevance, and both the Malays and the non-Malays began to abandon them.
PKR needs to find its essence back. And I agree with the writer, Martin. It can start with a change in leadership or at least in its policies.
