Law minister lists three criteria for anti-hopping law, applicable on indie reps who later join parties

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 — Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar today clarified to the Senate the three main criteria, as contained in the administrative draft of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, that define party hopping by a Member of Parliament.

He said the first criteria is when a member of parliament announces leaving the political party he/she contested for in an election to be an Independent member or join another political party.

“The second is when a Member of Parliament is expelled from the political party. This is for the purpose of ensuring that MPs abide by the constitution, as well as the party rules and regulations.

“The party that sacked the Member of Parliament concerned will face the risk of losing the seat and an election will have to be held again," he said in response to a question from Senator Datuk John Ambrose.

Time to consider halting use of MySejahtera for contact tracing: MMA
Posted by: superadmin - 03-30-2022, 02:07 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 03092021_-_MySejahtera_apps_newest_updat...AF_-_3.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has called for an end to the use of the MySejahtera app for contact tracing purposes, saying that it may have now outlived its usefulness.

Its president Dr Koh Kar Chai said that the app’s scanning feature for the purpose of contact tracing is no longer as useful as it was in the earlier phases of the pandemic. He noted the high transmissions of Covid-19 in the community.

“As we are transitioning towards an endemic phase of Covid-19, it is time that we consider a halt to the scanning of MySejahtera each time we enter a premise, especially when we complete the phase of transition.

“The use of Mysejahtera allowed contact tracing to be done during the height of the pandemic, a feat that would have been impossible without the MySejahtera app.

“However, it may have outlived its usefulness as a contact tracing app,” he said in a statement today.

Biden mired in credibility crisis on Ukraine amid attempt to seek defense spending boost

[Image: ad02d524-592d-4ec0-9e42-7f8c836c0b20.jpeg]

The White House on Monday asked Congress for an $813 billion national defense in 2023, including $773 billion for the Pentagon, a four percent rise from the 2022 submission, with the "pacing challenge" of China and the "Russian aggression" to justify the request.

A day after US President Joe Biden forcefully declared in Poland that Russian President Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power", a national poll released by NBC News on Sunday ironically showed that Biden's job approval fell to its lowest in his presidency, amid inflation, COVID-19 outbreaks, and concerns of rising military expenditure and the escalating Ukraine crisis.

On the sharp contrast between the record-breaking defense budget request and lowest approval rating, Chinese experts said the White House should be aware that creating rivals and showing military toughness is not the way to win public support and make the US look great again.

The days of creating tension or even war to solve deep problems at home are gone, and the US' position on the Ukraine crisis is not as justified as it thinks it is, they said.

We’re open, but some parties don’t want cooperation, says Wan Saiful
Posted by: superadmin - 03-30-2022, 10:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU: Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan has taken a swipe at Umno, saying his party is ready to work with its allies ahead of the 15th general election (GE15) but there are parties that do not want such cooperation.

Asked whether he thought Bersatu and Umno should continue working together under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-BN (GRS-BN) pact for GE15, Wan Saiful, who did not mention Umno by name, said his party had been clear that it wanted to maintain its partnership with other parties.

How political cults have shaped Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 03-30-2022, 09:57 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The recent “Bossku” rave in many parts of the country has left many people dumbfounded and baffled by the rapturous reception that former prime minister Najib Razak has been receiving.

Whether the crowds that greeted him on his walkabouts were paid or not, the fact that many had no qualms to be openly seen wearing “Bossku” T-shirts and taking selfies with Najib speaks volumes of where our politics is headed.

There must be some people who think Najib is indeed innocent of the criminal charges on which he was convicted; others could be there for the benefits, monetary or otherwise. There could be some who admire him for rising above the murky morass in which he had landed. One needs intelligence and gumption to manoeuvre out of such a mess.

All this is taking place at a time when the Goldman Sachs-1MDB trial in the United States is going full steam ahead with much incriminating evidence being exposed, while some of those involved directly or indirectly in the defrauding of a nation seem to be enjoying their freedom in different parts of the world.

Solomon Islands’ PM calls China security deal backlash ‘insulting’
Posted by: superadmin - 03-29-2022, 03:01 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Manasseh_Sogavare-Wikimedia_Commons.jpg]

HONIARA – The Solomon Islands’ prime minister today rebuked Australian fears that a draft security pact between his country and China that leaked online last week would “destabilise” the South Pacific.

In an impassioned speech, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said he found it “very insulting to be branded as unfit to manage our sovereign affairs or have other motives in pursuing our national interest”.

The proposals in the leaked draft agreement would allow Chinese security and naval deployments to the Pacific island nation, a development that sent shockwaves through Canberra last week.

Sogavare said the pact is yet to be signed but confirmed that his government and counterparts in Beijing had reached an agreement on the shape of the deal, although he offered no details.

While existing security arrangements with Australia would “remain intact”, Sogavare said that “to achieve our security needs, it is clear that we need to diversify the country’s relationship with other countries – and what is wrong with that?”

“So far, it’s all talk. I welcome the suit by Najib. There will definitely be a counter-suit,” Badrul told FMT.

Judge says Trump ‘likely’ committed crimes in bid to block Biden victory

Donald Trump appears to have committed multiple felonies as he sought to return himself to power on 6 January, a judge said in a Monday ruling that ordered the Trump lawyer John Eastman to turn over hundreds of emails to the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack.

The extraordinary ruling marks a breakthrough and paves the way for the select committee to obtain some of Eastman’s most sensitive emails concerning his illegal scheme to overturn the 2020 election, which he had attempted to shield from the inquiry.

Biden pitches US$5.8 trillion plan with record tax hike
Posted by: superadmin - 03-29-2022, 10:52 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 385739969-US-President-Joe-Biden-pix-Mon...2Hl.xhwLeg]

(March 28): President Joe Biden unveiled a US$5.8 trillion budget request designed to appease moderate Democrats on Monday, with a proposal that emphasized deficit reduction, additional funding for police and veterans, and flexibility to negotiate new social spending programmes.

Congress historically sets presidential budgets aside but they do form a key messaging device. The White House included measures that would add up to the biggest tax increase in history in dollar terms, helping stabilize deficits relative to the size of the economy.

The 2023 budget calls for US$1.598 trillion in so-called discretionary spending — areas that aren’t linked with mandatory programs like Social Security — with US$813 billion for defense-related programmes and US$769 billion for domestic spending.
