Nurul Izzah: Identity politics is unhealthy, politicians should bridge divides and not ‘fan the flames’

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah decried those who champion identity as the bedrock of their politics, calling their political agenda “unhealthy.”

She said that issues like eradicating poverty and addressing existing class divisions within society should be a priority when it comes to policy making.

“... you want to support politics based on a clear-cut agenda, whether it is to uplift the bottom 40 per cent category, whether it’s to eradicate poverty or whether it is to address the existing class divide.

Constitutional controversy: heated Dewan sitting expected on Article 10 amendment
Posted by: superadmin - 04-11-2022, 09:28 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – The pushback from several federal lawmakers pertaining to the proposed constitutional amendment related to party-hopping promises for a heated sitting, as it is set for tabling in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The bill to amend Article 10 of the federal constitution – to make way for a standalone anti-party hopping law in the future – has already raised concerns among lawmakers and rights groups over its potential abuse.

Chiefly, they believe that the proposed amendment’s wide definition could potentially grant the government broad powers to implement provisions to remove elected representatives on a whim.

Among those who have expressed reservations over the bill in its current state is Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, who warned that amending Article 10 alone, without strictly defined anti-party hopping laws, would be “too wide and dangerous”.

Muhyiddin wrong to say he must be consulted on dissolution, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 04-11-2022, 09:15 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin might have shot himself in the foot when he insisted that the coalition must be consulted before Parliament is dissolved, says an analyst.

“I think he made a mistake by announcing to the world that he wants to be consulted,” said James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute.

“That he has had to tell the media that he expects to be consulted … this actually tells you that he is currently not being consulted.

“This is a sign of (political) weakness rather than that of political strength. It is also a signal that the general election is coming up very soon.”

China slams US virus ‘accusations’ as Shanghai lockdown drags on
Posted by: superadmin - 04-11-2022, 09:05 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

SHANGHAI – China blasted the United States for making “groundless accusations” about its Covid-19 policy, after surging cases in Shanghai prompted the American consulate to let some staff leave the locked-down megacity.

Beijing’s zero-Covid-19 strategy has come under strain since March as over 100,000 cases in Shanghai have seen its 25 million inhabitants locked down in phases, inciting complaints of food shortages and clashes with health workers.

The US embassy said Saturday it would permit non-essential employees to leave its consulate in Shanghai due to the case surge, warning citizens in China they may face “arbitrary enforcement” of virus curbs.

In response, Beijing expressed “strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the US side’s groundless accusations about China’s epidemic control policy”, according to a statement issued Saturday on the foreign ministry’s website.

“This is the US’ own decision. However, it must be pointed out that China’s epidemic control policy is scientific and effective,” ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, adding that Beijing had lodged “solemn representations” with American counterparts.

“We have full confidence that Shanghai and other places will overcome this round of the epidemic.”

YOURSAY | Wan Fayhsal seeks to walk back on ‘protector’ remarks
Posted by: superadmin - 04-11-2022, 09:00 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

OrangePanther1466: The Chinese naturally gravitate to DAP because of the oppressive affirmative policies being practised by the majority to the detriment of the minority. The Chinese also support PKR for the multiracialism reformation platform espoused by the party.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has dug a hole for himself so deep that he is now trying to walk back his hasty words. Why would the 70 percent majority need a "protector" when all the positions of authority are held by them?

If ever they need a "protector", it would be against the likes of the elite politicians who have been ‘raping and robbing’ the nation dry for the past 60 years while the poor rural folks continue with their subsistence existence.

Existential Turd: Chinese vote DAP not because it is a Chinese party. It fields candidates from other ethnic groups as well. It is also perceived to be the least corrupt of all parties.

Has Bersatu fielded a Chinese candidate? No, it can't. Because it is a Malay-only party.

Unfortunately, all Malay-based parties are tainted by incompetence as far as managing the country is concerned. When it comes to leaching of the country, they are the experts.

The fact is neither MCA nor DAP did much to protect the Chinese. They bent over backwards to please their Malay masters. The minorities survived by their own grit.
Voting for DAP is akin to supporting vernacular schools - Chinese parents prefer to send their children to these schools because the alternative is unpalatable.
Increasingly, many Malay parents are sending their kids to vernacular schools too, not because they are "Chinese" schools but because they do not teach discrimination like many national schools.

And many Malays are joining DAP for the same reason.

Muda must get to voters on the ground, says party vice-president
Posted by: superadmin - 04-09-2022, 09:26 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Muda still needs to work on engaging voters on the ground to gain their trust, according to party vice-president Lim Wei Jiet.

In an interview with FMT, Lim said: “We need to show voters that we are trying to fight for them, instead of being people who only come around every five years to exploit their votes.”

The youth-based party, formed by former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies last December and made its debut in the Johor elections in March.

US shuns UN meeting on biological security to cover up guilt conscience
Posted by: superadmin - 04-08-2022, 10:09 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

When Russia, China and other countries expressed their concerns over US biological activities in countries including Ukraine at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, the US did not show up, which in some Chinese experts' eyes, was out of the US' "guilty conscience" over the issue.

At the UN Security Council Arria Formula Meeting on Biological Security on Wednesday, Igor Kirillov, chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces of the Russian Armed Forces, said Washington is creating biological laboratories in different countries and connecting them to a unified system. In territories bordering Russia and China alone, about 60 facilities have been modernized since 2005 with funding from the US military, he said. Kirillov noted that the US has spent more than $5 billion on military biological programs since 2005.

US, NATO seek united front with Asia-Pacific allies to isolate Russia, pressure China over Ukraine crisis

[Image: a1d791b9-8814-4b8c-b48e-634c56e2c4e1.jpeg]

South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers were invited to join the high-profile NATO session on Thursday for the first time as NATO seeks to gain cooperation from Asia to isolate Russia and pressure China over the Ukraine crisis. But analysts said the US is coercing more countries to choose sides in the crisis and using it as an opportunity to help NATO's global expansion.

The NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels agreed to sustain and further strengthen support for Ukraine, and step up cooperation with partners, given the global implications of Russia's action in Ukraine, according to a statement released after the meeting on Thursday.
