In the mid-1970s when Anwar Ibrahim was teaching at Yayasan Anda, a private college to assist school dropouts at Lembah Pantai, he went to work riding a 70cc Honda Cub.
Among his friends, he was known as ‘Saudara’ Anwar, a respectful and endearing term, derived and used by many Universiti Malaya undergraduates then and the Malay literati group.
‘Saudara’ carries a proletarian tone and denotes equality among the Malay youths and adults of that generation. It was so influential that even DAP emulated it and used the term for their leaders and party cadres. Thus, we had Saudara V David, Saudara P Patto and Saudara Ahmad Nor in the same vein as Saudara Ahmad Boestaman and Saudara Kassim Ahmad.
Today, we still have Saudara Lim Kit Siang, Saudara Loke Siew Fook and Saudara Gobind Singh Deo and yet Saudara Anwar has evolved to become a ‘Dato Seri’. It is still not too late for Anwar to rebrand himself and be referred to as Saudara Anwar again or Pak Anwar, as he is fondly called in Indonesia.

OCT: No success can be achieved when the idea was borne out of a racial incident. There was no planning, no strategy, and no understanding of the business. It is a recipe for failure.
Mara digital malls were initiated not based on a legitimate business model but from spite to rival Low Yat Plaza. Low Yat dealers had established vendor relationships with foreign manufacturers.
Mara digital malls have no such supply chains. So, how to succeed? Businesses don't succeed without effort, hard work, and business acumen.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has no past considerations to shout about. His standard operating procedures (SOPs) and movement control orders (MCOs) were failures. However, he was lucky to be at the right place and the right time to become prime minister.
It looks like race and religion are still important factors for BN despite their business failures.

China's industrial profits growth accelerates in October, growing 25% from a year earlier
China's industrial profit growth accelerated in October, growing 25 percent from a year earlier, boosted by the country's policy to secure energy supply and stabilize prices. Nonetheless, the progress is still facing uncertainty due to COVID-19.
China's industrial profits in October grew by 25 percent year on year to 818.7 billion yuan ($128 billion), an acceleration of 8.3 percentage points from the previous month, and rebounded for two consecutive months, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Saturday.
China's industrial profits from January to October grew by 42.2 percent year on year to 7.17 trillion yuan, up 43.2 percent from the first 10 months of 2019, an average increase of 19.7 percent over two years, NBS data shows.

Chinese Ambassador to the US Qin Gang and Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov jointly published an article on Friday entitled "Respecting People's Democratic Rights" on the National Interest magazine to voice against the Biden administration's so called Summit for Democracy on December 9 and 10, which according to the article will "stoke up ideological confrontation."
The virtual Summit for Democracy that will be hosted by US President Joe Biden is "An evident product of its Cold-War mentality, this will stoke up ideological confrontation and a rift in the world, creating new 'dividing lines.' This trend contradicts the development of the modern world. It is impossible to prevent the shaping of a global polycentric architecture but could strain the objective process. China and Russia firmly reject this move," according to the article.

PERMATANG PAUH – PKR remains steadfast in its stand to nominate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as its prime ministerial candidate in the next general election, said party central leadership council member Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid.
The Kapar MP said it is not fair to place all the blame for Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) defeat in the recent Melaka election on Anwar’s shoulders alone because there were many contributing factors that led to the loss.
“For me, those who talk about PKR’s defeat do not know the data. Many give their views at the national level, but they do not do research at all.
“If you don’t know the data, then shut up,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik has officially joined PKR after just over a year as an independant.
He formally announced his move at an event to hand over his membership form to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim at the Deewan Kampung Baru Machap in his constituency today,
In his speech, he also described his move as a sort of homecoming as he was a registered member of the PKR Ampang branch in 2017.
“Today I bring a message to youths and others my age, that there is still hope. We still have hope to rise up and bring change. So it is on this ground that I, just like all of you, ordinary people who desire change, made this major decision to join PKR,” he said.
Maszlee had been a member of Bersatu under Pakatan Harapan (PH), briefly aligning with Muda in August last year before becoming an independant representative last November.
He acknowledged today that his move may come at a time which was “not very encouraging” and a bad choice in view of PKR’s recent defeats in the Melaka state election.
He said there were those who asked why he was joining a party that had lost and whose president was being attacked by his foes and some friends.

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak’s proposal to restructure the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) dividend payouts on a sliding scale has been described as “robbery in disguise”.
DAP deputy youth chief Chiong Yoke Kong was responding to the former prime minister’s proposal that EPF members with lower savings receive higher dividends.
He said Najib’s proposal in a Facebook post yesterday reflected that he did not understand the fundamentals of the EPF system.
Najib had proposed that members who contributed less should receive a higher dividend compared to those who contributed more.
In a statement, Chiong responded: “Allowing members with lower deposits to obtain higher interest rates is actually a robbery in disguise against law-abiding and honest members who have made long-term deposits.”
It was also a complete betrayal of the principles of fairness and justice, he added.

PETALING JAYA: Some leaders of Muafakat Nasional (MN) have forgotten the genuine spirit of cooperation behind the pact after aligning themselves with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and becoming too comfortable with the power they enjoy , says Mohamad Hasan.
The Umno deputy president said the moment they viewed PN as a shortcut to power, the agenda of ummah unity would not be attained.
Mohamed said the leaders also held the erroneous perception that all the problems and interests of the Malay-Muslim community could be addressed by PN.
Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang rejected an “incomplete” MN, the pact forged between Umno and PAS in the aftermath of the 14th general election.
He said that being part of MN in its present form was akin to being “shackled”. PAS is also part of PN.
“It must be accepted that PN, which has become a bigger political movement, needs to be in power in this plural society,” Hadi told party organ, Harakahdaily.

At least 61 new cases of Covid have entered the Netherlands from South Africa, the Dutch health ministry has revealed as fears mount over the spread of the new super mutant variant Omicron.
Around 600 passengers arrived on two planes in Schipol Airport, near Amsterdam, from Johannesburg — the epicentre for the new strain that experts fear is 40 per cent more vaccine evasive than Delta — hours after travel bans were put in place.
Europe's first case of the variant was spotted in Belgium yesterday — despite the unvaccinated woman who caught it having travelled to Turkey and Egypt, not souther Africa where the strain emerged.
South Africa recorded 2,828 new Covid cases yesterday, more than double the 1,374 recorded last Thursday, but infection levels have yet to skyrocket in the country and no hospitalisations with the new variant have occurred so far.
And Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, one of the Oxford scientists behind the AstraZeneca vaccine, today expressed cautious optimism that existing vaccines could be effective at preventing serious disease from the variant.
