The first real world data showing the coronavirus variant Omicron may evade some of our immunity has been reported by scientists in South Africa.
Scientists have detected a surge in the number of people catching Covid multiple times.
It is a rapid analysis and not definitive, but fits with concern about the mutations the variant possesses.
It is also not clear what this means for the protection given by vaccines.
A week after the variant was named Omicron, the world is still scrambling to understand the true threat posed by the variant. But now the first pieces of a large and complex puzzle are starting to be assembled.
We already know the variant is heavily mutated and officials in South Africa have warned it is leading to a surge in cases there.

KUALA LUMPUR – Amid rising panic surrounding the new Covid-19 Omicron variant, is the Malaysian government jumping the gun and overreacting based on incomplete reports?
This question becomes more pressing when the doctor who first alerted the world of the Omicron strain has herself voiced astonishment over the global anxiety and extreme action following her discovery.
In a commentary piece published by The Daily Mail UK on November 30, Dr Angelique Coetzee stressed that nothing she has seen of this new variant warrants the extreme action that the United Kingdom has taken in response to it.

KUCHING: PKR has named another candidate to contest in the upcoming Sarawak state elections bringing the total number of candidates to 28.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said Hapeni Fadil would be contesting in the Simunjan state constituency following requests from the constituents as well as local non-governmental bodies.
“As of now, I don’t know if there will be more candidates in the future. I have no information. Indeed, many want to contest,” he said in a press conference at the Sarawak PKR headquarters here last night.
He said PKR was committed to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) principle to ensure no overlapping of candidates among its component parties in the Sarawak polls.
“We need to focus on areas that have party machinery and strength. Does this mean we are paving the way for GPS to win? No. We don’t want to hog areas where we don’t have enough strength,” he said.

At least 26 million people are struggling for food following consecutive poor rainfall seasons in the Horn of Africa.
Drought conditions in northern Kenya, much of Somalia and southern Ethiopia are predicted to persist until at least mid-2022, putting lives at risk.
The situation is already so bad that wild animals are dying in their hundreds and herders are reporting losses of up to 70% of their livestock.
The BBC’s senior Africa correspondent Anne Soy reports from Wajir in northern Kenya.
WARNING: This video contains images of dead animals which some people may find distressing.

(CNN)Driving through a snow-capped mountain pass, the young mother huddles together with her six children in the backseat of a car after leaving their makeshift camp in northwestern Afghanistan.
Carrying only a blanket for warmth, 9-year-old Parwana Malik balances on her mother's lap beside her siblings, as the family is rescued by an aid group that saves girls from child marriage.
"I am really happy," Parwana said during the journey. "The (charity) rid me from my husband and my husband is old."
Last month, CNN reported that Parwana and several other underage girls were being sold by their fathers so other members of their families could eat.
At the time, Parwana's father Abdul Malik said she cried day and night before, begging him not to sell her, saying she wanted to go to school and study instead.
After an international outcry as a result of CNN's story, Parwana was returned to her family due to the backlash from the community against the buyer.
The United States-based non-profit Too Young to Wed (TYTW) had also got involved to relocate the girls, their siblings and their mothers to a safe house.
"This is a temporary solution," said Stephanie Sinclair, the founder of TYTW. "(But) really what we're trying to do is prevent girls being sold into marriage."

US sues to block chipmaker Nvidia’s US$40 bil merger with UK’s Arm |

WASHINGTON – United States regulators filed a lawsuit yesterday to block the US$40 billion (RM169.4 billion) merger of graphics chip star Nvidia with mobile chip technology powerhouse Arm Ltd, fearing it would undermine competition.
The move comes as US President Joe Biden strives to ramp up domestic chip production to ease the American industry’s reliance on imports.
“The proposed vertical deal would give one of the largest chip companies control over the computing technology and designs that rival firms rely on to develop their own competing chips,” the Federal Trade Commission said in a release, calling chips “critical infrastructure”.
The world faces a global shortage of semiconductors, choking production of a wide range of products including automobiles, sending new and used car prices surging.
FTC echoed concerns expressed about the merger by regulators in the United Kingdom, who recently ordered an in-depth probe of the takeover.
Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries last month asked the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) regulator for a Phase Two probe into the acquisition, according to the British government.

Is Malaysia suffering from ‘adviser mania’, asks Kit Siang |

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has asked if Malaysia is suffering from an attack of “adviser mania”, following reports that the prime minister will be getting another special adviser – on health matters.
He wonders if Ismail Sabri Yaakob will eventually have 31 special advisers, shadowing the 38 ministers in the Cabinet, with each minister also having a special adviser.
This follows yesterday’s announcement by special functions minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad that Ismail is to get yet another special adviser to assist him, with the appointment of a health adviser.
In a written parliamentary reply, Latiff said there were three special adviser roles to the prime minister – on law and human rights, religious affairs, and health.
While Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said and Kedah Umno chief Jamil Khir Baharom have filled up the first two roles, respectively, the special health adviser is “still in the process of being appointed”, he said.

ADUN SPEAKS | Special envoys, special advisers, what special next? |

ADUN SPEAKS | Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaacob must be so inept that he needs three special advisers to assist him to administer the country.
The three special advisers will be paid a total of RM150,000, each getting RM50,000 per month.
I have no complaints if the funds are coming from the pockets of Ismail Sabri, but unfortunately, the money is from government funds contributed by taxpayers.
Having four special envoys was bad enough, now we have three special advisers.
What special appointments are in the offing are not known for the time being.
The power of patronage is such that the creation of special positions seems to be an indelible part and parcel of the present system based on “I scratch your back, you scratch mine”.
