Wong Chen raises alarm on controversial Sabah carbon deal
Posted by: superadmin - 12-02-2021, 06:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU: A PKR leader has demanded that the Sabah government disclose full details of a controversial carbon deal it provisionally agreed with a little-known Singaporean firm.

Subang MP Wong Chen said the deal, which is known as the Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA), essentially covers up to two million hectares of state forest land for a period of 100 years.

He said it had been reported that during this period, 30% of the profits from carbon credits generated would be paid to the firm, Hoch Standard Pte Ltd.

“I am particularly alarmed to read that deputy chief minister Jeffrey Kitingan, when defending the deal, said Sabah could earn RM3.2 billion worth of carbon credits from the two million hectares of forest, yearly.

“If these numbers are real, the state government has to justify why Hoch Standard should be paid RM960 million a year for the next 100 years,” he said, in a press conference held at the Parliament building today.

No merger with PKR, says Amanah’s No 2
Posted by: superadmin - 12-02-2021, 04:53 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub has quashed talk of a merger with PKR, saying his party will not entertain any such proposal.

The Pulai MP told FMT that the matter had not been raised or discussed in Pakatan Harapan, adding that the proposal was also not the official stand of either party.

“This matter is not even an issue. It just came from certain quarters and it’s not the official view of the parties concerned.

“We have formed Amanah and are a part of PH until this day. And we will remain comrades in PH,” he said, of the PAS splinter party.

Yesterday, PH chairman and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said a formal proposal for PKR and Amanah to be merged had been received although no discussions had been held yet.

He said the leaders of both parties were aware of the proposal and would explore the idea, adding that the proposal to merge both parties had been thrown around for some time by some members of PKR.

  Does Malaysia have hope?
Posted by: superadmin - 12-02-2021, 10:47 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: shankar-r-santhiram-columnist-new-170321-1.jpg]

“Hope springs eternal”. I was taught that it is human nature to always find fresh cause for optimism. I suppose this is what Alexander Pope meant when he wrote this line.

For all of us, our lives have been built on hope. But earlier this year, a Harvard poll of young Americans showed that 51% of the respondents said they feel down, depressed or hopeless.

It would be interesting to see what the poll would show if it was conducted in Malaysia, now.

People like to feel optimistic about and in control of where their life is headed. But with this coronavirus pandemic and its seemingly never-ending variants, the future feels difficult and uncertain, and few of us have much control over it, beyond doing our best to keep ourselves and those around us safe.

Another rep to quit Sabah DAP?
Posted by: superadmin - 12-02-2021, 10:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU: Another Sabah DAP assemblyman has begun contemplating his future in the party, less than two weeks after former state chief Jimmy Wong called it quits.

Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong cited internal issues and the recent party polls, in which he and several other DAP elected representatives were not voted into the state committee, as among the reasons for his unhappiness.

Chong, who retained the east coast Elopura seat for a second term in last year’s state election, however, stopped short of saying he was leaving the party.

“I am still with DAP for now,” he told FMT. “However, I am waiting to see if the party will take measures to rectify those issues and also how well the new committee performs.

“If nothing is done, I will need to think about my next course of action.”

Wong, a former Kota Kinabalu MP and state representative, announced his departure from DAP on Nov 22, saying he was disappointed with the results of the recent party election.

Besides Chong, others who failed to be re-elected into the state committee included Kota Kinabalu MP and former Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin, Kepayan assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang and former senator Adrian Lasimbang.

PKR-Amanah merger makes sense, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 12-02-2021, 10:35 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A merger of PKR and Amanah would benefit both parties as it could help Pakatan Harapan (PH) attract rural Malay votes, according to political analyst Azmi Hassan.

However, he told FMT, there might be a backlash from some PKR leaders.

The former academic said PKR was currently relying only on its president, Anwar Ibrahim, to woo rural Malay voters and it was hard for the party to draw those votes away from PAS and Umno because the strength of its other leaders was in mixed urban areas.

He said Amanah could help it draw rural voters who found PAS’ “extreme religious views” unattractive.

EU evening score with China via own Belt and Road project
Posted by: superadmin - 12-02-2021, 10:30 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 17022021-European_Commission_chief_Ursul...witter.jpg]

BRUSSELS – The European Commission yesterday announced a plan to mobilise €300 billion (RM1.4 trillion) in public and private infrastructure investment around the world, a move seen as a response to China’s Belt and Road strategy.

“Global Gateway will aim at mobilising investments of up to €300 billion between this year and 2027...bringing together resources of the European Union (EU), member states, European financial institutions, and national development finance institutions,” a commission document said.

The Global Gateway plan does not mention China’s rival and longer-standing international infrastructure strategy by name – but EU chief Ursula von der Leyen called it a “roadmap for major investment in infrastructure development around the world”.

The money to be made available will not come from EU and member state coffers, and the plan will need funding from international institutions and the private sector if it is to get anywhere near its target.

China launched its global investment strategy known as Belt and Road, a flagship project of President Xi Jinping, in 2013. Beijing said it had invested US$139.8 billion (RM590.72 billion) as of last year, including US$22.5 billion that year alone.

The temple restoration project located at King Street here is being recognised for its excellence in three main areas, namely understanding of the place, technical accomplishments, and sustainability and impact.

He also paid tribute to the late Tan Yeow Wooi, who died three days ago on Monday.

He was the architect consultant and heritage conservator for the project.

Vaccine inequality is to blame for Covid omicron varian

Vaccine inequality is to blame for Covid omicron variant, Rockefeller Foundation president says
  • The emergence of the new Covid variant is a result of the failure of the richest nations to share their vaccines with developing countries, said the foundation’s president, Rajiv J. Shah.
  • South African scientists reported their discovery of the new highly mutated variant late last week, though cases have now been identified around the world.
  • Omicron’s plethora of mutations led to the WHO designating it a “variant of concern” and “very high risk,” though much remains to be learned about it in the coming weeks.

The failure of the wealthiest nations to share Covid-19 vaccines quickly and widely with developing countries is a key reason for the emergence of the new omicron variant, according to Rajiv J. Shah, president of the Rockefeller Foundation.

South African scientists reported their discovery of the highly mutated variant late last week, though cases have now been identified around the world. Dutch authorities say the variant was already in the Netherlands when South Africa alerted the World Health Organization about it.

Omicron’s plethora of mutations led to the WHO designating it a “variant of concern” and “very high risk,” though much remains to be learned in the coming weeks about the severity of symptoms and the variant’s ability to evade vaccines and treatments.

Speaking to CNBC at the Conference de Paris on Tuesday, Shah said the pandemic has highlighted the “tremendous ingenuity and innovation” in the private sector that can be used in public policy. Operation Warp Speed in the U.S. is a “huge success story,” he added.

However, he suggested that the developed world had failed in its two objectives to ensure that such success could be emulated globally.

China-Russia govt heads stress strategic consensus to jointly deal with external pressure at regular meeting

Chinese and Russian governments agreed to further deepen mutual trust and cooperation, as Chinese Premier Li Keqiang held the 26th regular meeting between Chinese and Russian heads of governments with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin via video conference on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Li noted that China and Russia, both major economies and emerging markets, share strategic consensus on upholding multilateralism and safeguarding the international system with the United Nations at its core, and the international order based on international law.

Mishustin said the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era is at an all-time high and continues to develop rapidly. The two countries should jointly cope with external challenges on the basis of mutual respect, mutual trust, equality and mutual benefit, and that Russia supports China in hosting the Beijing Olympic Winter Games. They jointly announced a Joint Communiqué and cooperation documents.

Strict control, vaccine research give China edge on Omicron
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 08:20 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 55dcc996-e345-457b-a9d9-ce1df8e9f478.jpeg]

With the world reporting more cases of Omicron variant on Tuesday and more Western countries hastening to close their doors, China, where so far only Hong Kong has reported cases, is calmly and confidently responding to possible challenges with vaccine research and the experience gained from China's dynamic zero-COVID policy.

Chinese observers said that China will benefit from its COVID-19 policy of preventing imported cases and domestic flare-ups which continues to show its unique advantages facing Omicron. In comparison, observers warned that Western countries are likely to be gripped by Omicron if the variant proves highly infectious, with their unscientific easing of epidemic control measures and overconfidence in vaccines.

On Tuesday, Scotland reported three additional cases of the Omicron variant, bringing the total number in the UK to at least 14, media reported.
