PETALING JAYA: A political analyst predicts that opposition parties in Sarawak will collectively win 30 to 33 of the 82 seats in the Dec 18 Sarawak elections.
James Chin of the University of Tasmania said Parti Bersatu Sarawak (PBS) may win 16, DAP 12, PKR three and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) two.
He said DAP is the strongest opposition party in Pakatan Harapan (PH), with a better election machinery and resources.
“The party already knew which seats they wanted to contest back in 2019. They also have a clear, strong leader in Chong Chieng Jen, although he is seen by some as arrogant and does not listen to his colleagues,” he said during a webinar organised by Singapore-based ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute today.

Gratification, absurdity and a ‘shadow director’: why the court affirmed Najib’s conviction
KUALA LUMPUR – The conviction of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was upheld unanimously by the Court of Appeal today, igniting waves of emotion and intrigue, both in Malaysia and around the world.
While delivering the judgment, justice Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil said the earlier findings by high court judge Nazlan Ghazali which led to Najib’s conviction were indeed correct, given that the prosecution had successfully proven his guilt.
Among other things, Karim referred to a defence by Najib which claimed that he was acting for national interests when dealing with the SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
The Court of Appeal instead labelled his actions as a “national embarrassment”.
Thus, it maintained the 12-year imprisonment and RM210 million fine imposed against Najib. However, the defence successfully obtained a stay of execution pending an appeal to the Federal Court.

KUCHING: Abdul Aziz Isa, the DAP candidate for Batu Kitang, claims he is no longer the brash young politician he used to be and is therefore in a good position to win the seat in the coming Sarawak elections.
“I’ve mellowed down,” the 32-year-old told FMT.
“In 2016, I was very fiery. I was young and I made mistakes. People make mistakes but the most important thing is that they change, and they should be given a chance if they change and improve.”

The Najib verdict - a bittersweet victory |

Vijay47: So, what now? Many Malaysians, including me, were not wholly convinced that our judiciary would rise to the occasion when push came to shove. Many believed that High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali was that solitary swallow, an act unlikely to be followed.
Today, to our great relief and delight, we have been proven wrong. The pride of our courts has been returned to its traditional heights.
To me, this is the greater victory. Not whether Najib Abdul Razak moves residence soon or has to change his wardrobe to standard issue, though with more vibrant colours. These are trivialities that pale in comparison to the magnitude of the respect the judiciary has earned.
For sure, Najib will appeal to the Federal Court, a futile effort from which only RM9 million counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah would benefit as he dances to the bank.
Judge Nazlan, and now the Court of Appeal, have done a thorough job in plugging every possible hole that might be exploited, so much so that overturning today’s decision has about as much chance as that snowball in hell.
Yet, there is more. Let us hope that bodies like the MACC, the police, and even the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) awake fully to their inherent responsibilities and try to elevate themselves from the depths they have fallen into.
Their exuberance in withdrawing charges and their paralysis in filing appeals are almost fatal shortcomings they have to rid themselves of.
My later vodka-Sprite promises to be particularly exhilarating!
Malaysia Bharu: Thank you, judges, for a fair judgment that even Umno stewards would welcome as a long-awaited opportunity to dislodge the 1MDB baggage and move on to better times.
As for the people, it is a long-awaited relief to see possible closure to the Najib/Rosmah Mansor era of unbridled abuses, corruption, international infamy and their endless greed for unearned wealth and luxury that drove them to steal from their own people largely consisting of the poor.
The people couldn't wait for Najib to begin serving his sentence. His remorselessness and manipulative behaviour in court and outside ever since he was charged have left a bitter taste in the people's mouths.
Najib is trying to outdo the courts through political manoeuvring. That should not be allowed to happen as there are just too many alleged crimes to his name. The people and country should be spared from his cunning manipulative ways to politicise, prolong and manoeuvre his way out.
Snowman: Any other person and they would have ended up in jail already. So, why the double standard?
If Najib had been convicted and the Court of Appeal agreed with the initial ruling, then he is guilty as of now, regardless of the option for further appeals. As such, the sentencing should start immediately. His lawyers can visit him in prison for their preparations for the final appeal.
Yet, he continues to roam free to do whatever and go wherever he likes. What is the message that we are sending here?
That anyone can rob the country blind but as long as they have the money to fight and drag the case on indefinitely, then they can remain free and considered innocent until the Federal Court's ruling?
By that formula, please release all the inmates who are awaiting their cases in the apex court.
It only looked like Najib was subjected to the same law as the rest of us but it's obvious that he enjoys benefits none of us does.

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP’s Ong Kian Ming has come to the defence of his party colleague and Damansara MP Tony Pua over several accusations made by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Bangi MP was responding to excerpts from the former prime minister’s new book in which the latter makes a veiled reference to Pua, accusing him of being arrogant and behaving like a minister during his tenure as the political secretary to finance minister Lim Guan Eng in the former Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration.

Court should limit Najib’s movements despite stay of execution: C4 |

PUTRAJAYA – Even though the Court of Appeal has granted a stay of execution over former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s conviction, it should still limit and curtail his movements especially when it comes to political activities, an anti-graft watchdog said today.
Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) founding director Cynthia Gabriel told The Vibes it would be unacceptable for someone who has been convicted to go gallivanting around, canvassing for votes like what happened during the Melaka election last month.
“The stay of execution is part of due processes under the rule of law, but some restrictions on political activities should probably be made, because right now he is moving around generating political support,” said Gabriel.
“Such restrictions should be decided by the court. The stay is part of due process until the maximum allowable trial is completed. Until then, he should or should not be given a stay of execution, depending on how the judges discern the situation.

Extreme policies by PAS will affect Sarawakians, says DAP MP |

PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has told Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to stop misleading Sarawakians that the extreme policies from Putrajaya, influenced by PAS, would not affect them.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said this included the recent controversial decision on liquor licensing for small coffee shops and restaurants, which was rescinded following protests.
At a press conference today, Yii said more than 250,000 Sarawakians are staying in the peninsula and some of them had businesses there.
“They will be affected by such extreme policies and regulations. Are we not going to speak out for their rights?
“If GPS continues to enable this government, we will see more such extreme policies being implemented in the near future.

Cold hard facts: Najib verdict proves prosecution apolitical, says lead |

PUTRAJAYA – Lead prosecutor Datuk V. Sithambaram has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision today upholding the conviction of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over corruption involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
He suggested that the verdict pronounced by Court of Appeal judge Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil negates any arguments that the prosecution had elements of politics.
“As prosecutors we have investigation papers and the testimonies of all witnesses. There’s no politics there, these are cold hard facts.
“Two courts and four judges found that the evidence pointed towards the commission of offences Najib was charged with.
“I think the facts speak for themselves,” Sithambaram said during a press conference inside the Palace of Justice.
He also took the opportunity to explain there is currently no gag order against Najib over the making of comments concerning the case, but warned that anyone who comments on a pending matter with the intention to influence the case could be found guilty of contempt.
“But I think very often the rules are broken,” he added.

In unanimous decision, court affirms Najib’s conviction, sentence in SRC case |

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today affirmed the conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court last year on Najib Razak in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, dealing a major setback to his efforts to make a comeback to mainstream politics.
In a unanimous decision, a three-member bench chaired by Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil said trial judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali did not misdirect himself for an appellate intervention.
Karim, who sat with Has Zanah Mehat and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, also dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal against his sentence.
Nazlan had sentenced the Pekan MP to 12 years’ jail and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty on seven counts of corruption in July last year.
Najib, 68, is the first former prime minister in the country to be charged in court and sentenced to jail.

Book review: why Kit Siang is a towering figure in M’sian politics – P. Gunasegaram |

KEE Thuan Chye’s biography on Lim Kit Siang is perhaps the most important independent contribution to literature on the DAP stalwart. It explains more clearly than anything I have read why he is such a towering and influential figure in Malaysian politics and deserves a place in the history of our country.
For all the talk of DAP being a parochial, Chinese-based party, his leadership of the party rattled Umno/Alliance and subsequently Barisan Nasional (BN) to its very roots in over half a century of him being a key opposition leader. The depth and breath of the issues he covered is truly amazing.
That’s not because of the Chinese-ness of the party, but the true multiracial and multicultural tenets that Lim held to by example and sacrifice in the face of enormous adversity. He continuously and unwaveringly championed the cause of democratic socialism against all odds, holding on to his principles tenaciously and paying the price for it.
And this meant taking the battle to key elements within his own party, many of whom wanted Lim to champion mainly the Chinese cause, because that was where DAP’s support base was and still is. But no, that was not for him.
It is largely due to Lim’s credit that DAP has maintained its multiracial mantle, wielding non-Chinese candidates in Chinese-majority areas and winning seats. In fact, there have been far more Indian MPs from DAP than from MIC, for instance.
