China and Germany have pledged to enhance mutual understanding and refrain from "microphone diplomacy" on the basis of mutual respect on Thursday when Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock via video link.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, an important year for both sides to commemorate, Wang said. Over the past 50 years, China and Germany respect each other and promote economic development and establish an all-round strategic partnership.
Wang congratulated again Baerbock on her appointment as the foreign minister of Germany.

The monster iceberg A68 was dumping more than 1.5 billion tonnes of fresh water into the ocean every single day at the height of its melting.
To put that in context, it's about 150 times the amount of water used daily by all UK citizens.
A68 was, for a short period, the world's biggest iceberg.
It covered an area of nearly 6,000 sq km (2,300 sq miles) when it broke free from Antarctica in 2017. But by early 2021, it had vanished.
One trillion tonnes of ice, gone.

China’s factories face ‘rather large’ downward pressure in the first quarter, official says - The industrial economy still hasn’t seen a firm recovery, due to the global pandemic, weakening trade growth, lack of consumer demand and other factors, spokesperson Luo Junjie told reporters.
- “On top of that, recently the coronavirus has spread to many places,” Luo said in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation. “In the first quarter of the year, the industrial economy still faces rather large downward pressure.
- Luo added that although the shortage in semiconductors has eased, supply will remain tight for a while.
BEIJING — China’s factory production faces “rather large” downward pressure for the first quarter, an official with the national Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Thursday.
The industrial economy still hasn’t seen a firm recovery, due to the global pandemic, weakening trade growth, lack of consumer demand and other factors, spokesperson Luo Junjie told reporters.
“On top of that, recently the coronavirus has spread to many places,” Luo said in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation. “In the first quarter of the year, the industrial economy still faces rather large downward pressure.”
Since late December and the entrance of the highly transmissible omicron variant into the country, local Chinese authorities have announced more lockdowns and travel restrictions to prevent Covid outbreaks from spreading.
These recent lockdowns would only have a short-term and limited impact on supply chains, Tian Yulong, chief engineer and another spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, told reporters at the same press event Thursday.

China cuts benchmark lending rate to bolster economy |

Just days after China cut a major interest rate for central bank lending to big commercial banks, and hours after central bank officials delivered a clear signal about monetary easing through promises of opening the monetary policy toolbox wider, the country took one further step toward capital easing by cutting the loan prime rate (LPR), the de facto benchmark lending rate, both in five-year and one-year terms, on Thursday.
Although the cuts are arranged according to loan periods, market observers said it's a sign of the government's urgent desire to boost market confidence and inject momentum into the real economy, as the country tried to achieve stable economic growth this year amid challenges including coronavirus and real estate weakness.
Compared with drastic US policies which usually upset the global market, China's policies, which are moderate and launched step by step, are more responsible and will not lead to wild vibrations in markets, observers said.

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 21 — Two DAP assemblymen and a former senator announced their resignation from the party last night, citing a loss of confidence in the party leadership.
Sri Tanjong assemblyman Justin Wong, Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong and former senator Adrian Lasimbang said they were disappointed with the party’s leadership and direction, especially after the recent passing of the amendment to Art 1(2) of the Federal Constitution.
“There is a lack of trust portrayed by our leadership in the state committee, the state chairman in particular.
“The loss of direction, serious internal division, and almost defunct level of communication between leaders have caused us to believe that the party is no longer a party that will strive. And it is getting corrosive,” they said in a joint statement here last night.

PETALING JAYA: About “99.9%” of PAS grassroots are said to be pleased with the decision to drop former minister Khairuddin Aman Razali from its central committee, party president Abdul Hadi Awang said.
He said there was no need for PAS to elaborate on the matter or issue an official statement, despite calls to do so, Utusan Malaysia reported.
Hadi said it was clear that Khairuddin’s ouster was linked to disciplinary issues and was an internal matter that need not be publicised.
“There’s no need (for an official explanation), such opinions calling for an explanation to be provided are isolated, and I was informed that 99.9% of the grassroots were pleased,” the Malay daily quoted him as saying.

AG must probe conflicting accounts in Azam Baki case, says lawyer |

PETALING JAYA: The contradiction between Azam Baki’s admission that his brother used his account and the Securities Commission’s (SC) findings that he was solely responsible for any trading must be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh said it was only appropriate for the AGC to step in now to investigate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief’s alleged securities law breach.
“The conflicting accounts with Azam first saying his trading account was used by his brother, while SC later saying the account was used by Azam only is enough to arouse suspicions.
“It’s enough to get the AGC to open an investigation into the matter,” he said.
He added that a source within the SC who told FMT that it need not refer the matter to the AGC was wrong, as it was common to have the attorney-general review such findings. He also asked the SC to state if the source’s claim was also its official stand.

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Johor has the final say on whether the state legislature will be dissolved and snap elections held, a lawyer said.
Bastian Pius Vendargon said that under the state constitution, only the menteri besar, in his capacity as the head of the executive, can approach the ruler to request for a dissolution.
“As stated under the Second Part of Article 7, the Sultan has the discretion whether to accept the menteri besar’s request to dissolve the legislature,” he told FMT.
Vendargon said this in response to a statement by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob that he will leave it to the state government to decide whether snap polls should take place.

PETALING JAYA: Johor state assembly speaker Suhaizan Kaiat has denied receiving a letter on the dissolution of the assembly to make way for state polls.
He said his office has not received any letter or verbal notice from the Johor menteri besar on the matter.
“Nothing at all,” he said on reports over a notice to dissolve the assembly.
A news portal had reported that a letter to dissolve the assembly was sent by menteri besar Hasni Mohammad to the speaker’s office.
Citing Umno sources, it said the state assembly would be dissolved on Sunday after the application was approved by the Johor palace.
