Report: Umno sees no benefit helping ‘weak’ PAS gain foothold in Johor, says Nur Jazlan
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed has said PAS is trying to hang onto its tenuous position in the federal government by securing a foothold in the Johor state government.
According to Malaysiakini, Nur Jazlan said PAS was attempting “to ride on Umno’s coattails” ahead of the impending Johor polls because the party knows it won’t be able to win seats in the state assembly under its own steam.
He cited as evidence the signs that the Islamist party has been making overtures to the state’s caretaker Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, who is also state Barisan Nasional (BN) chief.
“Why should we help weak (parties)? In Melaka, they have proven (they are weak). They did not ally with us and lost everything.
"At the time, we offered them rights to field five candidates but they chose to go (with Perikatan Nasional).

Deja vu for MACC in leadership crisis – Terence Fernandez |

LAST weekend’s #TangkapAzamBaki rally calling for the arrest of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki lent a sense of déjà vu to those whose memory has yet to fail them.
It was 15 years ago that a similar rally calling for the head of the anti-graft chief was held – only this time instead of Kuala Lumpur, it was held in Putrajaya with the final destination being the Prime Minister’s Office.
Also, this time, instead of being organised by youth movements, the rally on March 6, 2007, to hand over a memorandum of protest to then prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was led by political parties such as PKR, PAS and Gerakan.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) was suffering a crisis of confidence.
Its then director-general Datuk Seri Zulkipli Mat Noor was accused of, among others, corruption, abuse of power, living beyond his means and even sexual impropriety.
The accusations were made in 2007 by a former ACA officer Muhammad Ramli Manan to then Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Bakri Omar, where the alleged offences were committed when Zulkipli was in the police force.
Zulkipli was police chief for Johor and later Sarawak before being appointed as the first police officer to head the ACA.
There were contradictory statements as to the probe into the allegations with Zulkipli saying he was cleared while then attorney-general Tan Sri Gani Patail reported as asking Bakri’s successor Tan Sri Musa Hassan to speed up investigations.
In fairness, Zulkipli was cleared later on but by then the credibility of the ACA was tattered and bruised.
Transparency International (TI) had placed Malaysia at 44th place in 2007 in its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) – a drop from 36th spot previously.

Zahid’s legal woes seen as irrelevant to Johor polls |

PETALING JAYA: Analysts expect Barisan Nasional’s chances of winning the Johor elections to remain good despite a recent High Court order on Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to defend himself against all 47 charges of corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering brought against him.
Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara and Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya told FMT they believed BN’s performance in last November’s Melaka polls showed that its leaders’ legal troubles had no bearing on its chances in state elections.
BN gained a two-thirds majority in the Melaka state assembly despite court cases involving several party members, including Zahid and former prime minister Najib Razak.
“I don’t see Zahid’s court case as having a negative impact on the party,” Azmi said.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu admits that the newly-registered Muda is capable of challenging other political parties, especially with the implementation of Undi18.
However, its deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said that it will take more than that to unseat the current government.
“When given a role, of course they (young people) are enthusiastic. It is true that Muda can be a threat, maybe even to all political parties,” the youth and sports minister said.
“But we must realise that the youth also have an interest in other parties, including those from PN and BN. So all parties could make an impact (following Undi18),” he said during a programme on RTM tonight.

Best for BN to go solo in Johor polls, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: It is in the best interest of Barisan Nasional (BN) to contest the upcoming Johor elections without cooperating with parties outside the coalition, according to an analyst.
Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the uncertainty of the other parties’ chances in the polls made it a bad idea for BN to give up seats it could itself vie for.
“Even if they do win, it is unsure that they will remain in support of BN,” he told FMT.
“PAS, for example, would still stick with Bersatu. This will be a loss for Umno and will weaken its dominance in BN.”

PETALING JAYA: Some SOPs can be relaxed for the upcoming Johor elections, says the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), given Malaysia’s vaccination rate and increasing booster shot uptake.
MMA president Dr Koh Kar Chai said more than 80% of the country’s population were fully vaccinated and there was an increase in the number of people receiving booster shots.
Based on the health ministry’s data, he said, more than 40% of adult Johoreans had received their third dose.
“Ceramahs would be okay if there is proper crowd control and strict adherence to SOPs,” Koh told FMT.

- Bitcoin, the world's largest virtual currency, briefly plunged below $33,000 Monday to its lowest level since July.
- It's since recovered back above $36,000, but is still down almost 50% from a record high of nearly $69,000 in November.
- That's got some crypto investors talking about the possibility of a "crypto winter."
As cryptocurrency investors reel from the sharp sell-off in bitcoin and other digital currencies, some fear the worst is yet to come.
Bitcoin, the world’s largest virtual currency, briefly plunged below $33,000 Monday to its lowest level since July. It’s since recovered back above the $36,000 mark, but is still down almost 50% from a record high of nearly $69,000 in November.
Meanwhile, the entire crypto market has shed more than $1 trillion in value since bitcoin’s all-time high, as top tokens such as ether and solana followed the No. 1 digital currency to trade sharply lower. Ether has more than halved in value since reaching its peak in November, while solana has suffered an even steeper decline, falling 65%.
That’s got some crypto investors talking about the possibility of a “crypto winter,” a phrase referring to historic bear markets in the young digital currency market’s history. The most recent such occurrence happened in late 2017 and early 2018, when bitcoin crashed as much as 80% from all-time highs.
David Marcus, the former head of crypto at Facebook-parent Meta, appeared to admit a crypto winter has already arrived. In a tweet Monday, he said: “It’s during crypto winters that the best entrepreneurs build the better companies. This is the time again to focus on solving real problems vs. pumping tokens.”

KUALA LUMPUR – Although national shuttler Lee Zii Jia will not be returning to the fold following his resignation from Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on January 11, the Malaysian athlete may have his two-year ban lifted to enable the 2021 All England champion to compete in the Asia Team Championships from February 15-20.
According to a source in the badminton fraternity, Zii Jia and the national body have reached a consensus that the 24-year-old Kedahan will be playing as a professional in no time at all.
“The meeting today was about his appeal on the two-year ban (by BAM) with negotiations (on the matter) still ongoing − we will know more next week.
“However, he has received BAM’s blessings to go professional.”

PETALING JAYA: A Johor Bersatu leader has mooted the formation of a grand coalition with Perikatan Nasional (PN) joining hands with Pakatan Harapan (PH), Pejuang, Muda and Warisan in facing the upcoming Johor state elections.
The Johor Bahru division’s deputy chief Razrul Anwar Rusli said all parties that oppose Barisan Nasional (BN) should gather under one banner, adding that this was a formula that worked in the last general election (GE14).
