ALOR STAR – Kedah DAP remains unfazed by reports that two Umno backbenchers are planning to defect as it will not benefit them or anyone else here politically.
Kedah DAP chairman Tan Kok Yew instead urged the people here to focus on celebrating Chinese New Year while also not discounting the threat that Covid-19 continues to pose in the state.
Reports have surfaced that the two Umno members namely Sg Tiang assemblyman Datuk Suraya Yaacob and Bandar Baharu assemblyman Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor may join other parties, but many political observers here said that it was just an attempt to rattle PAS’ hold in the state, given that Umno is not in any position to inflict damage in the state.
Tan does not expect the two Umno representatives, who are state excos, would betray the PAS-led state government, here.
“I think it is a joke. There is no basis as it does not make any difference.”
“DAP accepts the status quo, and we will continue to play our role as an opposition in the state assembly.
“We will not resort to any move to unseat the state government. We have suffered in the last two years due to Covid-19 and the movement control orders.
“So, let’s enjoy the Chinese New Year and reduce politics for the time being.
“Let us refresh our energy so that in the future, Pakatan Harapan (PH) can take over the state in the next general elections,” he said.
Meanwhile, Norsabrina said that she has no plans to withdraw her support from the PAS-led state government.
She added that she also spoke to her counterpart Suraya, who also professes the same thing.
At present, PAS holds 15 seats in the 36-member Kedah assembly, while Bersatu has six and Umno two, giving Perikatan Nasional 23 seats.
They enjoy a simple majority of 13 after overthrowing the PH government in 2020, which was then led by Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who is the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed.
PH, through PKR and Amanah, has five and four seats respectively, while DAP and Pejuang have two seats each.
Meanwhile, a veteran politician, who declined to be named, said that there is no reason for any defections to transpire although many quarters feel that there is room for improvement for Kedah under Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammed Sanusi Md Nor.
“Kedah has a long way to go to develop the state,” he said. – The Vibes, February 1, 2022

The 4 vitamin and supplements this immunologist takes every day to strengthen her immune system: ‘Your body will thank you’
In a perfect world, we’d all have access to a balanced, nutrient-dense diet that’s chock-full of healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, adequate protein and fiber — and theoretically, shouldn’t have to take additional vitamin supplements in order to strengthen our immune system.
However, not only do most of us fail to hit these daily nutrition goals, but we may have situations — like physical stress or inflammatory health issues — when we need more of certain nutrients than what we’re getting from food.
As an immunologist and functional medicine doctor, I always say that you cannot supplement yourself out of bad health or replace a poor diet with vitamins, but you can fill in the gaps to give yourself that extra leg up.

PETALING JAYA: A former deputy minister has urged the authorities to ensure that tahfiz schools adhere strictly to safety regulations.
Commenting on the frequency of fire incidents at such religious schools, Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah told FMT he believed many of them did not get clearance on the safety of their premises.
The most recent fires happened last week at two branches of Maahad Tahfiz Assyatirie. On Jan 24, 240 students escaped a fire at the hostel of the school’s Sungai Dedap branch in Yan, Kedah. The incident came less than two days after a fire at the Kampung Dulang Besar branch in the same district.
More than 1,000 fires occurred in registered and unregistered religious schools from August 2015 to August 2017. Of these, 211 were burnt to the ground, according to the fire department.
Raja Kamarul, who was deputy minister for housing and local government from 2018 to 2020, said the authorities responsible for giving approvals must not compromise on safety and the quality of the materials used to build the premises.

PETALING JAYA: Uncle Beng, the injured and homeless trishaw rider the Malaysian online community saved from a painful end with its donations has died.
Fiercely independent, he had a history of absconding from care homes for the elderly.
However, it now emerges that he spent the last months of his life in the Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged, reportedly relatively happily and without making any further breaks for freedom.
Uncle Beng came into the news in an FMT report in March 2020, when he was discovered, head wrapped in bandages, in his trishaw outside his favourite kopitiam, Lai Heng 88 Cafe near Komtar.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi says the current government will not collapse even if Perikatan Nasional (PN) pulls its support for it.
Noting how the slim support Barisan Nasional had in the Johor state assembly forced the coalition to call for the state elections, he said the situation was the same in the federal government, where Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has a “weak majority”.
“That is why the federal government should take the same steps as in Johor. If the rumours are true that Ismail was threatened, that doesn’t mean the current government will collapse,” he said.
“This government can still be saved with the support of PH (Pakatan Harapan) MPs.

PETALING JAYA: Election Commission (EC) chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh is hoping for Covid-19 restrictions to be eased at the upcoming Johor state elections.
Fears that public gatherings could lead to a spread of Covid-19 saw campaigning severely curtailed during the Melaka and Sarawak polls in November and December, respectively.
When asked in an interview with RTM about campaigning rules at the Johor elections, which must take place on or before March 23, Ghani said the SOPs were still being discussed with the health ministry and the National Security Council (MKN).

PETALING JAYA: The road transport department (JPJ) has drawn flak for saying it will penalise driving schools for traffic offences and road accidents caused by their former students.
CT Balan, the operations director of a driving school, Safety Driving Centre, said JPJ had no right to do so since its officers were the final examiners of the students.
JPJ announced recently that it planned to suspend or revoke the permits of driving institutes from which many traffic offenders had graduated.

Disruptions in China can lead to ‘ripple-effects’ across global supply chain, says HSBC
- China’s zero-Covid restrictions will impact global supply chain recovery as any small disruption in the country will likely lead to “ripple effects” across the world, according to the head of shipping at HSBC.

China’s zero-Covid restrictions will impact global supply chain recovery as any small disruption in the country will likely lead to “ripple effects” across the world, according to the head of shipping at HSBC.
The pandemic has revealed “how lean the supply chain has become. And there is little margin of error,” said Parash Jain, global head of shipping and ports equity research at HSBC.
“The sheer importance of China when it comes to global trade means that any small disruption in China, will have a ripple effect across the supply chain,” Jain told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Monday.
