Don’t accept ‘political frogs’ in Melaka, Rafizi warns PKR |

PETALING JAYA: Rafizi Ramli has warned PKR not to take risky shortcuts in their zeal for power in Melaka by embracing “problematic frogs” like former state chief minister Idris Haron and three other assemblymen.
Their defection led to the collapse of the Barisan Nasional (BN) state government, resulting in the Melaka state election that has been fixed for Nov 20.
Rafizi, who is PKR vice-president, issued this warning in his Facebook post, in response to news that Idris and his other three allies had reached out to PKR to contest in the state election under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner.
“The people have suffered from the Covid-19 pandemic because of the struggle between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional politicians for political power and wealth.

Will authorities address high divorce rate among Muslims? |

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed some serious flaws in our relationships.
On Oct 12, deputy law minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin told Parliament that about 140 divorce applications had been filed a day from March 2020 to August this year. Of these, 121 cases a day were attributed to Muslim couples.
Did the high divorce rate of 66,440 cases filed by Muslim couples with the e-shariah system ring alarm bells among the Malay community? So, how will the government address this problem?
Registering 121 divorce cases a day, or five every hour, among Muslims is worrying. Was there a breakdown in the relationship? Was the couple saddled with financial trouble, especially as many people had lost their jobs during the pandemic? Was it being cooped up at home during lockdown that caused the union to fail? Did the husband want to divorce his wife to marry another woman?
Will the authorities find out the real reasons for these divorces?
According to Mas, the highest divorce rate among Muslims was recorded in Selangor (12,479). The rates for the other states are Johor (7,558), Kedah (5,985), Kelantan (5,982), Perak (5,921), Terengganu (5,098), Pahang (5,058), Sabah (4,010), the federal territories (3,854), Negeri Sembilan (3,473), Penang (2,978), Melaka (2,402), Perlis (1,081) and Sarawak (561).

PETALING JAYA: Warisan is all set to launch itself as a national party and will adopt a multiracial approach in its policies, party president Shafie Apdal said today.
He said many politicians from Peninsular Malaysia, including a few from Umno, have been asking when will we be moving to the national platform.
“We need to expand. The final decision will be made soon by the Warisan Supreme Council and we will be there. We will focus on being multiracial in our approach but also ensure Muslim values are always upheld.
“We expect many of the young voters to come on board because they are more daring when it comes to change. Multiracial politics is the way forward for the country,” he told editors of media outlets in a special zoom session from Kota Kinabalu in conjunction with his birthday.

THE coming National Environment Day 2021 presents Malaysia the golden opportunity to commit ourselves in charting the right course of action against global warming.
This means protecting our environment, reducing our carbon footprint and at the same time creating a competitive edge in a green economy, as well as a holistic formal education that promotes our relationship with nature, said WWF-Malaysia Conservation Director Dr Henry Chan.
“Climate change and climate crisis are no longer buzz words among scientists and environmentalists,” he said in a statement yesterday, in conjunction with the National Environment Day celebration.

Climate change putting national rice security at risk: Kiandee |

KUALA LUMPUR – Climate change is posing a threat to the production levels of Malaysia’s staple food, rice, and this is expected to have an adverse impact on the nation’s rice security.
The effects of climate change are being felt increasingly in recent years as the higher risk of occurrence of natural disasters such as floods and prolonged dry spells, as well as shifting rainy seasons and rising sea levels, have influenced water availability.
According to Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry (Mafi) data, between 2017 and 2021, a total of 40,828.28ha of padi fields nationwide were destroyed by floodwaters while another 9,336.45ha were damaged due to drought.
In a recent interview, Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee said Malaysia’s food security has been affected by the increase in the average annual rainfall every decade, based on the nation’s rainfall records for 40 years, that is, between 1978 and 2017.
Mafi, meanwhile, has also observed an increase in the size of localities experiencing a reduction in average annual rainfall distribution, particularly in the west coast and southern and central parts of Peninsular Malaysia, such as the Sg Pahang and Sg Kuantan basins.

Difficult choices could make Melaka polls messy for coalitions, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: Almost all parties going into the state polls are trapped in internal conflicts and face possible sabotage.
Former academician Azmi Hassan said the coalitions and parties entering the state election would have to take decisions that would affect the results and cooperation between them.
He noted that DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had expressed unhappiness over the possibility that one of the four assemblymen who pulled the plug on chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali’s administration, triggering the snap polls, would stand under a Pakatan Harapan ticket.
This is said to have come about after PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim met the four assemblymen.

PETALING JAYA: Political analyst Azmi Hassan has cautioned Pakatan Harapan against accepting former Melaka chief minister Idris Haron and his three colleagues into its fold and fielding them in the coming state election.
He said PH’s principles would come into question and it risked being punished by voters.
“By accepting them, I think PH will be demonstrating that it can put its principles aside as long as it can achieve its political objective,” Azmi told FMT. “It will not serve PH’s political purpose. Instead, it will backfire.”
Another analyst, Wong Chin Huat, said questions would be asked about PH’s stand on party hopping should it accept the four assemblymen, whose resignation caused the fall of the state government.

A 35-year-old man in Chongqing who plans to invite 10,000 strangers to his home for dinner within 10 years has grabbed attention recently.
Hao Shuai launched the project in January and has hosted free dinners in his downtown apartment in Chongqing's Yubei district.
Each month, Hao holds four to six dinners in his 30-square-meter kitchen, accommodating 10 to 12 people each time. So far, he has invited more than 1,600 people, spending more than 10,000 yuan ($1,554).
He said the food cost for each meal is less than 200 yuan, and the real cost is time. "But if you consider cooking a relaxation and enjoyment, it is not a burden at all," he said.
Born in a village in the district in 1986, Hao was raised with a natural love for food — his father was a chef, and his mother ran a food stall for more than 30 years.

How trading CO2 could save the climate |

For its proponents, a global carbon market could significantly reduce the world's carbon emissions. But its critics say that giving polluters the option to pay for their emissions is not the answer to climate change.
In July, wildfires scorched vast swathes of North America. In Oregon, the Bootleg fire destroyed more than 400,000 acres of forest. As the trees went up in smoke, so did a large number of carbon offsets, including ones that had been bought by firms such as BP and Microsoft.
The Bootleg fire highlighted one of the flaws of the carbon offsetting market: how can we ensure the carbon removal projects we invest in will still be there in 10 years, let alone 100 years? As climate change leads to more intense wildfires and prolonged droughts over the next few decades, the question is whether these offsets are effective tools that can help us drastically reduce carbon emissions.
The largest market for carbon offsetting to date will be under discussion in November at the 26th United Nations' Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), in Glasgow. Governments say carbon credits, and a global carbon market where these credits can be bought and sold, can help them achieve ambitious emissions reduction targets. But campaigners warn that such a system provides rich countries with a license to keep polluting.

Luna the sun bear cub’s birth a pleasant surprise |

SANDAKAN – On May 20 this year, the world’s only conservation centre for sun bears, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sepilok, here, was shocked over a pleasant surprise.
One of its female captive bears, Bintang, had given birth to a female infant bear.
Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) founder Dr Wong Siew Te said the birth was completely unexpected. But it was bound to happen as the rescued bears at the centres have grown older. They are also kept mixed at a compound that is surrounded by the forest.
It was the first sun bear’s birth in captivity at the centre in the last 10 years.
The cub, later named "Luna" by supporters of BSBCC on Facebook, was at first taken care of by Bintang.
