‘Cold war’ possible, but not break-up: Fahmi on PKR polls
Posted by: superadmin - 03-28-2022, 09:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – The coming PKR election in May will not lead to a split in the party as the contest will be a democratic process guided by party discipline, information chief Fahmi Fadzil has said.

The party polls, scheduled for May 13 to 18, are expected to be hotly contested, with former party strategist Rafizi Ramli returning to the fold by declaring that he would stand for deputy president.

Fahmi said the contest may lead to a “cold war” between the competing camps, but stressed that the party will make sure to enforce discipline to clamp down on any disturbances.

Subsidy rationalisation ‘necessary evil’ for efficient economy, says professor

KUALA LUMPUR – The removal of certain key subsidies may put a dent in the pockets of the majority of Malaysians, but is necessary to help the country’s economy prosper, according to an economist.

Sunway University economics professor Yeah Kim Leng argued that general subsidies granted by the government today are inefficient and could be better utilised on more productive uses with greater multiplier effects.

This includes building public infrastructure, spending on skills upgrading, ensuring technological improvement of industries, building affordable housing, and offering grants to smaller businesses.

More importantly, he said the rationalisation of subsidies will help improve Malaysia’s current precarious fiscal and debt positions.

But rather than removing subsidies at one go, Yeah suggested that this be done on a gradual basis to reduce its impact on consumers, and to offer targeted subsidies to the poor and underprivileged.

DAP may lose 5 of its 42 parliamentary seats in GE15, says Guan Eng
Posted by: superadmin - 03-28-2022, 09:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The DAP expects to lose up to five seats from its present 42 parliamentary seats based on the voting patterns in the recent Johor state elections, party chairman Lim Guan Eng said today.

He said the results in Johor had also shown that DAP should retain four of the current five parliamentary seats in the state, adding that the Labis constituency may pose some difficulties.

“Johor Umno deputy chairman Nur Jazlan Mohamed recently said he would not recontest his Pulai parliamentary seat because based on the Johor state election results, he would lose.

Watch the video here.

“Nur Jazlan said that despite the party winning 40 out of the 56 state seats, Barisan Nasional (BN) is not the majority party in Johor as it won only 43% of the popular vote.

China industrial profit up but mired in single-digit growth
Posted by: superadmin - 03-27-2022, 07:47 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

BEIJING (March 27): Profit growth at China's industrial firms accelerated in the first two months of the year, in line with other signs of momentum in the economy, although the outlook is clouded by domestic Covid-19 outbreaks and the war in Ukraine.

Profits rose 5.0% in from a year earlier, up from a 4.2% gain in December, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Sunday.

The growth in January-February was driven by surging profits in the energy and raw materials sectors, thanks to higher prices of commodities such as crude oil and coal. January and February data are typically combined to smooth out distortions from the Lunar New Year holiday, which can fall in either month.

Legal experts decry call by PAS senator for Muslim-only PM law
Posted by: superadmin - 03-27-2022, 02:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – As the majority of Malaysia’s 32 million population subscribe to the Islamic faith, the post of prime minister should only be held by a Muslim and this should be enshrined in the federal constitution, said PAS senator Khairil Nizam Khirudin.

Through postings on his social media, he has urged the government to table a constitutional amendment towards implementing this matter.

Khairil denied that this is a populist or extremist move, saying instead that it is necessary for the law to preserve the sanctity of Islam as the religion of the federation.

The PAS information chief also claimed that restricting the nation’s highest political office to a Muslim is already practised by the states of Terengganu, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Perlis, and Pahang.

Tian Chua not going for PKR veep post, but will run in GE15
Posted by: superadmin - 03-27-2022, 02:33 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: FMT-YB-CHUA-TIAN-CHANG-TIAN-CHUA-PKR-VP-210319.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Tian Chua says he is not defending the post he has been holding since the formation of the party in 1999 to “cool the temperatures” in the party brought by the feverish race for positions in the elections due in May.

However, he insisted that he was not quitting politics and would be defending the post of Batu division chief.

“I was among the four vice-presidents but, as we know, three of them have left.

“I am the only incumbent left, but I am making way to avoid the party from facing a tough election in May.

“As you can see, temperatures are rising in the party as the elections are nearing. This is not good with the next general election down the corner,” he told FMT when contacted.

PETALING JAYA: Non-Malays have nothing to fear if they are governed by a Malay party like Pejuang because history has shown the community prospered under such rule, according to Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The former prime minister said Malay governments had always been friendly towards the Chinese migrants, while their businesses flourished in Malay-dominated administrations as their economic policies “were far more friendly and open than the British”.
