PETALING JAYA: PAS and its splinter party Amanah are likely to try and outdo each other by being more conservative to attract rural voters, a socio-political analyst says.
Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said that although Amanah says it is progressive, the difference between the two may become blurred as the next general election (GE15) approaches, with both fighting for the same issues and in the same tone.
“They may slip into the same conservative thinking and try to be seen as championing Islamic issues, even if they are not relevant.
Yesterday, Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa said Muslim sensitivities must be looked after in all alcohol-related activities, even when it comes to choosing brand names and symbols.

KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) is ready to face three-cornered fights in next month’s Melaka polls, said chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a press conference today, he said this is after Barisan Nasional (BN) remains undecided on cooperating with his coalition in state polls.
The Pagoh lawmaker said the entire PN machinery, which comprises Bersatu, PAS and Gerakan, has agreed to continue with the alliance’s agenda that has been agreed on the national level.
“We are ready to cooperate, but the question remains – is the other party (BN) ready to cooperate or not? There isn’t a clear and firm answer.
“We are short on time; the nomination and polling dates have been announced.
“As a coalition in PN, we can’t procrastinate anymore. If there is no clear signal (from BN), we will follow decisions made by PN at the national level.” – The Vibes, October 21, 2021

KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah has reminded the nation and its leaders that rulers in Malaysia have a responsibility to protect the federal constitution and the philosophy behind the enactment of its laws, while providing check and balance for the executive administrative body.
In his address during his book launch at Dewan Bahasa Pustaka this morning, the Perak ruler said Malay sultans must also understand the constitution with wisdom to ensure that justice does not fall by the wayside.
“A ruler has the responsibility to ensure that the constitution and the philosophy enacted behind it is understood and protected.
“Each term and each word enshrined in the constitution has its own meaning; and must be interpreted with wisdom, and studied intensively and accurately, to ensure that justice is not left behind.
“A king rules and does not govern but is responsible to monitor and ensure that there is fairness and justice in the administration – where it is organised and transparent – and must play the role of a wise arbitrator towards the legislation, executive and judiciary, to ensure there is check and balance while strengthening public confidence on democratic practices.”

DAP, PKR at odds over letting ‘Melaka Four’ run under coalition banner |

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will have a tough decision to make when deciding on the candidates for next month’s Melaka election.
Indications point towards the party nominating the four former assemblymen who withdrew support for the Umno-led state leadership earlier this month, triggering the snap polls.
However, such a move could infuriate other Pakatan Harapan component parties and potentially threaten their relationship.
DAP has stated that it rejects any of the four former state reps, including former Melaka chief minister and ex-Umno man Datuk Seri Idris Haron, from contesting under the PH banner, while many in Amanah are also understood to be against this idea.
Other than Idris, the other three representatives who withdrew support for the Melaka state government were Datuk Nor Azman Hassan, formerly from Umno; independent Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee, and ex-Bersatu man Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad.
Piling more pressure, DAP lawmaker Charles Santiago today urged the PH leadership to stick to its principles and not to entertain the wishes of the “Melaka Four” to contest under the coalition’s flag.
In a statement, the Klang MP warned that if PH was to accept the four assemblymen, there is no guarantee that they will not jump parties again in the future.

Trump to launch new social media platform TRUTH Social |

Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to launch a new social media network, called TRUTH Social.
He said the platform would "stand up to the tyranny of big tech", accusing them of silencing opposing voices in the US.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which he chairs, also intends to launch a subscription video-on-demand service.
Mr Trump was banned or suspended from social networks like Twitter and Facebook after crowds of his supporters stormed the US Capitol in January.
He and his advisers have since hinted that they were planning to create a rival social media site.

Trump acts like he’s above the law because Mitch McConnell lets him |

For all the wrongdoing the Mueller report discovered, it didn’t find clear evidence of the animating charge: that Donald Trump knowingly colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election. But with Ukraine, Trump appears to have done exactly what he was accused of before: asked a foreign government to help him win a presidential election, perhaps dangling military aid as an incentive.
That Trump would attempt such brazen collusion after the Mueller investigation shows the lesson he took from that experience is that he is unchecked and unaccountable. And perhaps he is right. After all, he has Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to protect him.
The political conversation about impeachment has, understandably, focused on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The House acts first on impeachment, and she has been a bulwark against moving forward. But on Tuesday, she’d had enough. “Today I’m announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry and directing our six committees to proceed with their investigation under that umbrella of impeachment inquiry,” she said. “No one is above the law.”
If Trump often acts like he is above the law, it is only because McConnell lets him. If McConnell decided to lead Senate Republicans in investigating and curbing Trump’s corruption, abuses of power, and obstruction of justice, Trump’s options would be to reform his behavior or be ejected from office.

Report warns of climate change's 'code red' impact on health |

(CNN)A new report published Wednesday warns of the severe impact of climate change on human health, and says the prognosis is only getting worse.
Droughts will hurt food production, rising temperatures will encourage the spread of dangerous pathogens such as malaria and cholera and current climate trends indicate a "code red" for future health, the new report in The Lancet medical journal predicts.
The Lancet Countdown report, published annually, tracks 44 metrics of the health impacts of climate change, including the impact of climate change on infectious disease transmission and food production, as researched by experts affiliated with more than 40 UN groups and educational institutions.
The report said during a 6 month period in 2020, 51.6 million people were impacted by 84 disasters from floods, droughts, and storms in countries already struggling with the coronavirus pandemic.
"The 2021 report of the Lancet Countdown finds a world overwhelmed by an ongoing global health crisis, which has made little progress to protect its population from the simultaneously aggravated health impacts of climate change," the report authors wrote.
Climate impacts on health identified in the report included increased droughts hurting food production, more violent natural disasters placing burdens on health care systems, and rising temperatures encouraging the spread of infectious pathogens.
The report said climate change contributed to a record-breaking heatwave in the US Pacific Northwest that caused more than 1,000 deaths.
"Looking to 2021, people older than 65 years or younger than 1 year, along with people facing social disadvantages, were the most affected by the record-breaking temperatures of over 40°C in the Pacific Northwest areas of the USA and Canada in June, 2021— an event that would have been almost impossible without human-caused climate change," the authors wrote.

Mitch McConnell just sent a VERY clear message to Donald Trump about 2022 |

(CNN)Mitch McConnell's entire being is -- and always has been -- focused on winning elections. Every move he makes and every thing he says is part of a broader effort to ensure that his side winds up with more seats -- and therefore more control -- than the other guys.
And, on Tuesday, McConnell made clear that he believes former President Donald Trump's ongoing focus on the 2020 election is decidedly detrimental to the GOP's chances in the upcoming midterm elections.
Asked by CNN's Manu Raju whether he was comfortable with candidates embracing Trump, McConnell said this:
"I do think we need to be thinking about the future and not the past. I think the American people are focusing on this administration, what it's doing to the country, and it's my hope the '22 election will be a referendum on the performance of the current administration, not a rehash of suggestions about what may have happened in 2020."
That's about as close as McConnell will get to outright refutation of Trump and the strategy, such as it is, that the former president is peddling -- a hard focus on trying to prove (nonexistent) voter fraud in the 2020 election.
While Trump's continued attempts to re-litigate the 2020 election have been ongoing for months, that effort went to another level in the last week when Trump suggested that unless the last election was overturned, future elections would be pointless.

South islands project could cost PH dearly, says analyst |

GEORGE TOWN: Pakatan Harapan (PH) lawmakers in constituencies that will be affected by the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project face a big dilemma – if they support their own state leadership’s plans, they are likely to end up losing their seats.
Azmil Tayeb of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) told FMT that the PSR could lead to potential seat losses for the ruling coalition in the state as the project could develop into a key issue in Penang come GE15.
“If you look at the constituencies that will be impacted by the PSR, they are Malay-majority seats, and Malay constituents view the state government as being insensitive to their needs.
“The PSR might have a resonating effect on other Malay-majority state seats that are not even affected by the reclamation project,” Azmil said.
