PAS banking on Taliban to improve Islamic image, says Bukit Aman’s counter-terrorism chief
PETALING JAYA: PAS is banking on the Taliban to improve its Islamic image, Bukit Aman’s counter-terrorism chief Normah Ishak said today.
Speaking in a webinar titled “Next Generation Afghan Alumni? Assessment from Southeast Asia”, Normah said PAS did so when praising the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan after the US troops withdrew from the country in August last year.
She cited PAS International Affairs and External Relations committee chairman Khalil Abdul Hadi’s congratulatory message on Aug 18.
Khalil, who is PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s son, posted a tweet in which he said the Taliban had “liberated” Afghanistan after it had been colonised and invaded. The tweet was subsequently deleted.

PETALING JAYA: Newly elected DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook holds the ideal position to dispel negative perceptions of the party, say political analysts.
Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said with DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang having retired from politics, and his son Guan Eng no longer its secretary-general, Loke was well positioned to ward off accusations that DAP was a nepotistic party.
“Loke needs to emphasise the fact that Kit Siang and Guan Eng’s previous predominance in the party was owed to their merits and capabilities, not due to their blood relationship,” Ahmad Fauzi told FMT.
“Kit Siang’s electoral record speaks for itself. Whether you put him in Melaka, Penang, Perak or Johor, he’s more than able to pull off a victory.”

Title decider? Or another twist in the tale?
Given the hype, you’d think the English Premier League trophy was being presented at the Etihad on Sunday night.
Yes, Manchester City vs Liverpool is a genuine heavyweight contest with both sides more than ready to rumble.
Yes, a win would be massively advantageous to either. But it’s not the end: neither of elaborate plans nor everything that stands, to borrow from The Doors.
Says Jurgen Klopp: “If we win against City, which is difficult enough, nobody will think ‘That’s decided’ because of the quality of the opponent.”
Nor because there will still be seven more league games to go.
Not to mention FA Cup and Champions League encounters which could still impact the title race.

Chinese still favour DAP as ‘protector’ of communal interests: Wan Fayshal |

KUALA LUMPUR – The Chinese community is still in favour of voting for DAP because they view the party as “the protector” of their communal interests, Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal claimed.
In a series of TikTok videos uploaded on his private Twitter account last night, Wan Fayshal said this goes to show that identity politics is not only practised by Malay voters, but also by the said ethnic group.
“Why we vote on the racial line is because we do believe that these political parties not only represent Malaysian interests but also their communal interests,” he said.

If we have a general election now, what do you reckon the outcome would be? You probably have a theory on who will win, right?
Going by the last few by-elections, you probably can make an informed and educated guess. And, if recent trends are to be believed, a lot of people will not bother to come out to vote, anyway.
So, what happens after the results are announced?
Some will rejoice that their preferred government has been brought to power. Others might give thanks that they possibly will not face too harsh consequences for any past misdemeanours.

- The XE variant has so far been detected in 637 patients, according to the latest statistics from the U.K. Health Security Agency.
- It is what’s known as a “recombinant,” meaning it contains a mix of the previously highly infectious omicron BA.1 strain, which emerged in late 2021, and the newer BA.2 variant, currently the U.K.’s dominant variant.
- Such recombinants are not uncommon, however health authorities said there is currently not enough evidence to draw conclusions on its transmissibility or severity.
LONDON — A new omicron subvariant has been detected in the U.K. as the country faces a renewed surge in Covid-19 hospitalizations.
The XE variant, as it is known, has so far been detected in 637 patients nationwide, according to the latest statistics from the U.K. Health Security Agency, which said there is currently not enough evidence to draw conclusions on its transmissibility or severity.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s loss in the next general election could be its death knell, an analyst has warned.
James Chin of the University of Tasmania told FMT he believed voters would give up on the opposition coalition in its present form if it were to lose again after being defeated in the Melaka, Sarawak and Johor state polls.
“GE15 is really a survival game for PH, rather than a springboard,” he said in a comment on PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli’s call for the coalition to be realistic about its chances.
In a recent statement, Rafizi also said it would be better for PKR and PH to settle for remaining in opposition “with dignity” than to trumpet their optimism about winning in GE15.

- Fed Governor Lael Brainard and San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly spoke Tuesday, emphasizing the central bank’s commitment to fighting inflation through higher interest rates.
- “It is of paramount importance to get inflation down,” Brainard said.
- Raising rates “is what is necessary to ensure that again, [you] go to bed at night, you’re not worrying about whether prices will be higher, considerably higher tomorrow,” Daly added.
f there was any question about where the Federal Reserve stands on the key issue of the day — inflation — two important officials brought even more clarity on Tuesday.
Fed Governor Lael Brainard and San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly both issued comments that showed they both envision higher rates and, in the former’s case, an aggressive drawdown of the assets the central bank is holding on its balance sheet.
Investors didn’t particularly like what they heard, sending major averages considerably lower on the day and the 10-year Treasury yield to a new 2022 high.

Report: Pushing tired tropes about Malays will chip away at votes, Rafizi tells Bersatu senator
KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli today claimed that Bersatu’s strategy to stereotype Malays as weak and in need of a protector — similar to Umno — would only backfire on them.
In an interview with Malaysiakini, Rafizi claimed that Bersatu was only parroting Umno in assuming that Malays are “neo-feudal, tribal and possess a protector-complex mentality”.
“It is to Bersatu's detriment if they assume that Malays are neo-feudal and tribal,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal.
His comments came after Bersatu Senator Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said in an interview published yesterday that Malays would shun a “full-blown” liberal Pakatan Harapan (PH), as they need a “protector” who syncs with their neo-feudal and tribal mentality.
