LONDON: Rishi Sunak became Britain’s third prime minister in two months today, tasked with tackling a mounting economic crisis, a warring political party and a deeply divided country in one of the greatest challenges to confront any new leader.
The 42-year-old former hedge fund boss was asked to form a government by King Charles, and will seek to bring an end to the infighting and feuding at Westminster that has horrified investors and alarmed international allies.

United States government officials have initiated talks with China’s leading supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment about Washington’s latest hi-tech export restrictions, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
US trade officials from the American embassy in Beijing held talks with executives of Naura Technology Group last week at the Chinese company’s headquarters in the nation’s capital, according to the person, who declined to be named because the discussions were private.
The meeting came weeks after a Naura subsidiary, Beijing Naura Magnetoelectric Technology, was among 31 Chinese tech firms, research institutions and related entities added by Washington to the US Unverified List (UVL).

LONDON – Former finance minister Rishi Sunak today won the battle for leader of Britain’s Conservative party and will become the country’s first prime minister of colour.
Penny Mordaunt, the last rival left after Boris Johnson dramatically pulled out, failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow MPs.
“Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative party,” senior backbencher Graham Brady said, as Mordaunt pledged her “full support” for Sunak.
Sunak’s triumph came after Johnson’s decision late Sunday to abandon his political comeback bid.
Just weeks after he lost out to Liz Truss to lead the ruling Tories, Sunak therefore pulled off a stunning reversal in fortunes.

- China reported Monday that third-quarter gross domestic product grew by 3.9% from a year ago, beating expectations.
- The data was originally set for release on Oct. 18, but was delayed late on Oct. 17 with no explanation. China’s Communist Party held its 20th National Congress from Oct. 16 to Oct. 22.
- The officially released 3.9% year-on-year growth for the third quarter marked a pickup from 0.4% in the second quarter, bringing year-to-date growth to 3%.

The data was originally set for release on Oct. 18, but was delayed late on Oct. 17 with no explanation. China’s Communist Party held its 20th National Congress from Oct. 16 to Oct. 22.
Analysts polled by Reuters prior to Oct. 18 had expected China to report GDP growth of 3.4% for the third quarter.
The officially released 3.9% year-on-year growth for the third quarter marked a pickup from 0.4% in the second quarter, bringing year-to-date growth to 3%.
That’s still well below the official target of around 5.5%.

LONDON – British Conservative Rishi Sunak was today poised to become prime minister and the country’s first leader of colour, after the dramatic decision by Boris Johnson to abandon an audacious political comeback.
Just weeks after failing in a first attempt to lead the ruling Tories, Sunak could cap a stunning reversal in fortunes by winning the leadership as early as this afternoon, following ex-premier Johnson’s unexpected move late yesterday.
The contest, triggered by outgoing leader Liz Truss’ resignation on Thursday, requires candidates to secure the support of at least 100 Conservative MPs by 2.00pm (1300 GMT) today.
Sunak had crossed that threshold by Friday night, ahead of declaring his candidacy yesterday and amassing nearly 150 public nominations from Tory lawmakers.

PETALING JAYA: The people are still not fully aware of the “rampant” corruption in the country, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said.
He said that when Pakatan Harapan (PH) came to power in 2018, he was shocked to discover the widespread corruption that had taken root during Barisan Nasional’s (BN) 60-year rule.
