KUALA LUMPUR – Lim Kok Leong created history by becoming the first Malaysian to win the World Snooker Championships title yesterday in Antalya, Turkey.

Kok Leong walked over Iran’s Amir Sarkhosh with a 5-0 scorecard (68-63, 67-42, 78-0, 80-7, 73-54) in the final, after he defeated Pakistan’s Babar Masih, 5-3, in the semi-finals.

It was only a month ago that the 27-year-old was crowned as the world amateur team champion – partnered with Moh Keen Ho – for the second time when it was hosted in Kuala Lumpur on October 9.

The duo defeated Thailand’s Kritsanut Lertsattayathorn-Jongrak Boonrod, 4-2, in the final held at the High Snooker Club in Cheras.

Their first victory was achieved in 2015 at Karachi, Pakistan.

Kok Leong also made the country proud when he delivered a gold medal at the Hanoi SEA Games in May when he won the six-red snooker singles, while Keen Hoo won bronze. – The Vibes, November 12, 2022

Bersih gives thumbs-up to election manifestos
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2022, 05:38 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Electoral reform group Bersih has praised the election manifestos of Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) for their inclusion of democratic reforms.

Although the manifesto promises were not comprehensive, Bersih said the pledges to strengthen and restore trust in public institutions as well as provide greater transparency were welcome.

“In particular, the separation of the public prosecution function from the attorney-general (AG) has long been a key demand by Bersih and other civil society organisations to remove doubts of selective prosecution and immunity from prosecution.

“We are pleased to see that both PH and BN have explicitly promised to separate the roles of the AG and public prosecutor,” it said in a statement.

Rafizi to file police report over PAS man’s ‘go to hell’ remark

TANGKAK: PKR will lodge a police report against a PAS leader for saying voters would “go to hell” if they chose Barisan Nasional (BN) or Pakatan Harapan (PH) instead of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the general election (GE15).

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said he will be filing the report himself as a reminder to PAS leaders and members not to use religion for political purposes.

“In a few days I will lodge a report with the police and Election Commission (EC) against PAS, because we cannot just ignore people like this.

Why Kadir Jasin chose to desert his 32-year loyalty for UMNO
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2022, 10:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

DELVING on what he described as mature politics, veteran journalist and blogger Datuk A. Kadir Jasin has shared that he was born into an UMNO family but left the leader of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition after 32 years being “a card-carrying member not because I hate the party but because I don’t want to collude with its evil leaders”.

To him, this is a sign of mature politics where one can see politics through shades of different colours when many people are still viewing politics as black and white which is whether to support a particular political party or otherwise.

“I got to know politics through UMNO when I was a teenager. But in 2015, I withdrew and in the 2018 general election fought UMNO on the platform of Pakatan Harapan (PH),” he penned in his latest Facebook post.

“In August 2020 I left Bersatu (and was released by Bersatu). My sentiments remain with the idealism that I’m for fighting for under the PH banner.”

KUALA LUMPUR: A man shown in a viral video removing a Pakatan Harapan flag in front of the national museum was a PH monitoring agent for the general election, police said today.

Brickfields district police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor said the man’s actions were on the instructions by the Lembah Pantai election campaign enforcement team chief and the police representative.

The spectacular implosion of crypto’s biggest star, explained
Posted by: superadmin - 11-11-2022, 02:48 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

Sam Bankman-Fried, one of the crypto industry’s biggest stars, has said a lot of things over the years, most recently that he’s “sorry” and he “fucked up.”
Before that, he said he might spend as much as $1 billion on politics in 2024. He said he had a lot of ideas for policing the crypto industry and using his crypto-fueled fortune for good. He said he’d be fine bailing out some crypto companies in trouble as crypto winter hit over the summer. All of these claims are now in limbo thanks to another thing he said on November 7: that his crypto exchange, FTX, was “fine.” It was not. Instead, the next day, the exchange imploded.

“It’s incredible how quickly these things can spiral out of control,” Molly White, a software engineer and prominent crypto critic behind the website Web3 is Going Just Great, told me.

Whether or not you’re a crypto person, chances are you’ve come into some sort of contact with FTX and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried — better known as SBF — in some fashion. He’s partnered with big names, such as soon-to-be-divorced couple Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, to spread the crypto gospel. He co-hosted Crypto Bahamas with medium name Anthony Scaramucci; figures such as Bill Clinton and Tony Blair attended.   Musk warns of Twitter bankruptcy as more senior executives quit

PALO ALTO/OAKLAND, California (Nov 11): Twitter Inc's new owner Elon Musk on Thursday raised the possibility of the social media platform going bankrupt, capping a chaotic day that included a warning from a US privacy regulator and the exit of the company's trust and safety leader.

The billionaire on his first mass call with employees said that he could not rule out bankruptcy, Bloomberg News reported, two weeks after buying it for US$44 billion — a deal that credit experts say has left Twitter's finances in a precarious position.

Earlier in the day, in his first company-wide email, Musk warned that Twitter would not be able to "survive the upcoming economic downturn" if it fails to boost subscription revenue to offset falling advertising income, three people who have seen the message told Reuters.

Zaid cannot reverse the forces of history against political decadence
Posted by: superadmin - 11-11-2022, 02:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

I FIND it amusing that the former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (main pic, left) thinks that the Barisan Nasional (BN) offers the most credible alternative to govern the country.

He remarked that BN’s election manifesto is not only impressive but provides a way out of the entrapment of poverty and economic malaise.

Zaid is confident that BN can become the government of the choice of the people. Its victory in the 15th General Election (GE15) is something to look forward to.

The other political alternatives, Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) are not really the choices taking into account the well-being of the country. In Zaid’s view, the BN coalition’s pragmatic political formula is much more impressive than the other two coalitions put together.

Malaysia records stronger economic growth in Q3 at 14.2%: Bank Negara
Posted by: superadmin - 11-11-2022, 01:49 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 09012021_-_KUL_-_KL_-_Bank_Negara_-_Sairien_51.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s economy marked stronger growth in the third quarter of this year, at 14.2% compared to 8.9% in the second quarter, Bank Negara Malaysia said.

The central bank attributed growth to strong domestic demand, improvements in the labour market and income conditions, as well as ongoing policy support.

“Exports remained supported by strong demand for E&E products. The recovery of inbound tourism lent further support to economic activity. By sector, the services and manufacturing sectors continued to drive growth,” BNM said in a statement today.

“Overall, the Malaysian economy expanded by 9.3% in the first three quarters of 2022,” it added.

For next year, the economy is expected to expand by 4.0% to 5.0%, supported by firm domestic demand amid continued improvements in the labour market.
