More than 1,000 Japanese tourists apply for trip to Xinjiang organized by China's Consulate-General in Osaka

In less than a month, 1,028 Japanese tourists have applied for a trip to Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region after the pandemic, showing a great enthusiasm for Xinjiang in Japan regardless that some right-wing Japanese politicians tried to smear the activity to dissuade Japanese people from applying.

The Chinese Consulate-General in Osaka issued a notice on December 2, 2021, to invite people from Japan to travel to Xinjiang after the end of the COVID-19 outbreak. The invitation sparked wide attention in Japanese media.

Xinjiang is a good place, but in recent years, slanders and lies about Xinjiang have emerged one after another causing great misunderstanding and harming the image of Xinjiang and China, Xue Jian, Chinese Consul General in Osaka, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

By inviting the Japanese people for a trip to Xinjiang, Xue said, the activity wants to enhance mutual understanding and welcome more and more people to travel to the region.

Chinese expert eases fears over new variant detected in France; WHO says it's monitoring

[Image: 2de698fb-e9b0-4827-ab88-d6075d379037.jpeg]

Although a new variant of COVID-19, known as B.1.640.2 or the "IHU variant," which has been detected in France with 46 mutations and 37 deletions, raised some concerns over its transmission capacity as well as its potential threat, a Chinese expert believes that there is no need to panic while the World Health Organization told the Global Times that the variant is being monitored with little circulation.

In a preprint which has not been peer-reviewed published on medRxiv on December 29, 2021, researchers from IHU Méditerranée Infection in France said that a new variant was first detected from a patient who returned from Cameroon. The new variant has infected 12 people in southeastern France, according to the research.

The Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) discussed the available information about the B.1.640.2 variant, including the preprint data, and its circulation in France and globally, and has decided to keep this as a "variant under monitoring,"  WHO said in a statement sent to the Global Times on Thursday.

Biden condemns Trump’s ‘web of lies’ a year on from deadly Capitol assault
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 03:02 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 7933.jpg?width=700&quality=85&auto=forma...671e60bca6]

Joe Biden on Thursday forcefully denounced Donald Trump for spreading a “web of lies” about the legitimacy of the 2020 election in a desperate attempt to cling to power, accusing the former president and his allies of holding a “dagger at the throat of American democracy”.

The US president condemned his predecessor’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election as a “failed” pursuit, but one that continues to imperil American democracy one year after the 6 January insurrection at the US Capitol, when a violent mob of Trump loyalists breached the Capitol in an effort to stop the certification of Biden’s presidential election victory.

In a speech from the Capitol marking the first anniversary of the deadly assault, Biden was unsparing in his assessment of the harm caused by the “defeated former president” whose “bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy or constitution”.

“For the first time in our history, the president had not just lost an election, he tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob reached the Capitol,” Biden said, never mentioning Trump by name. “But they failed.”

Pakatan leadership want MACC chief and anti-corruption board chairman investigated

Pakatan leadership want MACC chief and anti-corruption board chairman investigated immediately

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 — The Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidential Council is calling for the formation of an independent body to investigate possible elements of corruption and abuse of power by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki and Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.

They said Azam’s explanation that millions of publicly-listed shares were bought in his name by his brother was unacceptable as it raised the issue of conflict of interest and breach of law.

“This breach of law can be tied to Section 25(4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991, which comes with an RM3 million fine or a jail term of up to 10 years if found guilty.

“There is also the issue of where the money to buy these shares came from,” they said in a statement today.

‘Who said logging caused the floods?’
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 11:44 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

[Image: 2020122020_muhammad_sanusi_md_nor_bernama.JPG]

ALOR STAR – Logging activities alone did not contribute to the massive floods that inundated up to nine states recently, said Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Instead, the outspoken politician blamed unusual rainfall for triggering the floods that affected three districts in Kedah in August.

Responding to claims that logging needs to be stopped in view of the floods, which overwhelmed Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, Sanusi questioned why Selangor and Kuala Lumpur suffered from flooding while both do not conduct logging activities.

Sanusi had earlier attended the signing of agreements between Kedah-linked companies with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at Wisma Darul Aman here.

He said local residents have been misled by claims that logging activities are behind the floods that hit Yan and Merbok in August.

He stressed that unusual rainfall was the cause of the devastating water-column phenomenon at Gunung Jerai.

“The impact washed away many low-lying homes.

“The rainfall on that fateful day was equal to one-and-a-half month’s worth of rainfall on an average in the same districts,” he added.

Sanusi conceded perhaps logging may have been a minor cause of the floods because there are not enough trees to impede the flow of water during heavy rain.

Opposing views within PAS wings on MACC, Azam Baki debacle
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 11:31 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Separate wings of Islamist party PAS have issued opposing views about the recent debacle involving the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

A statement issued by PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan yesterday commended Azam for clearing the air about the alleged conflicts of interest brought against him, saying it was the right thing to do to maintain the perception and integrity of MACC.

“PAS applauds steps taken by MACC’s chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who openly addressed the accusations by several media agencies and independent portals against him concerning alleged ownership of shares in several companies.

“The open statement by MACC’s chief commissioner that denied these accusations can hopefully put an end to the actions of certain parties who appear to be raising the issue deliberately, as though they intend to trigger doubt among the people and cause instability in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.”

Takiyuddin said that the burden of proof now lies with Azam’s accusers to present their evidence against the chief commissioner, adding that he hopes to see authorities taking fair and impartial action against all involved in the episode, if needed, and for it to be based on the rule of law.

Lawyers unconvinced by Azam Baki, Abu Zahar’s explanation
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 11:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 07042021_-_KUL_-_Op_Hack_-AZAM-BAKI-MACC_Sairien-02.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Legal experts have questioned the veracity of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s claim when he told the press that he had done nothing wrong when he allowed his brother to purchase shares using his trading account.

Speaking to The Vibes, the senior counsels even expressed doubts towards the legitimacy of statements made during the entire press conference held on Wednesday at the MACC headquarters that prominently featured Azam and the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.

Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali told The Vibes that he found it baffling that the LPPR, which functions solely as an advisory body to the MACC, had absolved Azam from any wrongdoing.

“Azam’s own press conference must now be subject of investigation by the Securities Commission (SC). The SC must open investigations.

“The timing of the advisory council and Azam’s press conference raises more questions and concerns regarding MACC’s integrity, more so when rumours have been swirling around for quite a bit.

“In short, Azam’s explanation is untenable,” Rafique said when contacted.

Senior criminal lawyer Fahri Azzat also weighed in, pointing out how Azam’s explanation given during Wednesday’s press conference that the purchased shares were meant for his brother was far from concrete.

“I think his excuse that it is his brother’s (shares) is predictably lame,” he told The Vibes

Young Malays can rise in DAP: youth leaders
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 11:10 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Despite DAP’s long-standing struggle in gaining support from the Malay electorate, the party’s young leaders from the majority ethnic group say that it has provided them with opportunities to rise up the ranks.

While one DAP leader recently called for a revamp of the party’s Chinese image, Syahredzan Johan, the political secretary to party’s veteran Lim Kit Siang, believes that there is no need for a major shift in its direction.

“To me, the party is on the right track to becoming a party that is accepted by all Malaysians, including the Malays,” the 38-year-old lawyer told The Vibes when contacted recently.

“This is especially so among the younger generation. More young Malays have signed up for the party, as they see DAP as being a party that values young leaders, which is apparent in the number of young elected representatives within our ranks.”

Form special task force to probe Azam, PM told
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 10:58 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to form a special task force to investigate allegations against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki on his corporate share ownership.

He said the task force should be independent, transparent, and have proper terms of reference to investigate the matter comprehensively.

The recommendation came after the anti-graft agency’s Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) chairman Abu Zahar Ujang said he would submit a report on the board’s probe on Azam to the prime minister for further action.

Puad told FMT that it was necessary for Ismail to take the initiative because people did not have confidence in the ACAB investigation.

“The people will not believe the report that will be sent by Abu Zahar to the prime minister because the board only listened to Azam’s explanations.

“Also, did they call upon other parties like Edmund Terence Gomez, the Securities Commission Malaysia, and Azam’s brother (Nasir) to make the investigation a comprehensive one?

Azam Baki controversy: A question of integrity
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2022, 10:45 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The share trading controversy involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki is not just about him or the trustworthiness of the MACC. It is about the integrity of our institutions.

An individual can come and go but the institution remains. The degree of trust that an institution commands depends largely on the integrity of its head and officers, and its ability to act independently, fairly and swiftly.

The question, therefore, is how the MACC measures up. Not well, it appears.

There are calls for Azam to go on leave or resign in the wake of the controversy over shares that were traded with his account in 2015.

Coming out in the open on Jan 5, weeks after the allegations swirled on social media, Azam denied committing any wrong or that there was a conflict of interest on his part.

“I explained to the board (the MACC’s anti-corruption advisory board) that my trading account was used by my brother for his shares trading and I have no interest nor have any part in this. The shares were bought in the open market and my brother had financed the purchases on his own.”

It doesn’t look good on Azam because he defended himself in public only after academician Edmund Terence Gomez resigned as a member of the MACC’s consultation and corruption prevention panel on Dec 27 – after claiming that the panel had failed to discuss the allegations against Azam – and the subsequent public pressure.
