Could microclots help explain the mystery of long Covid?
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 08:55 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 4841.jpg?width=620&quality=45&auto=forma...30df32fb16]

One of the biggest failures during the Covid-19 pandemic is our slow response in diagnosing and treating long Covid. As many as 100 million people worldwide already suffer from long Covid. That staggering number will eventually be much higher, if we take into account that diagnoses are still inadequate, and that we still do not know what the impact of Omicron and future variants will be.

Patients with long Covid complain of numerous symptoms, the main ones being recurring fatigue and brain fog, muscle weakness, being out of breath and having low oxygen levels, sleep difficulties and anxiety or depression. Some patients are so sick that they cannot work or even walk a few steps. There is possibly also an elevated risk of stroke and heart attacks. One of the biggest sources of concern is that even mild and sometimes asymptomatic initial Covid-19 infection may lead to debilitating, long-term disability.

Since early 2020, we and other researchers have pointed out that acute Covid-19 is not only a lung disease, but actually significantly affects the vascular (blood flow) and coagulation (blood clotting) systems.

A recent study in my lab revealed that there is significant microclot formation in the blood of both acute Covid-19 and long Covid patients. With healthy physiology, clots may form (for instance, when you cut yourself). However, the body breaks down the clots efficiently by a process called fibrinolysis.

[UPDATED] Abu Zahar dares Gomez to prove misconduct emails claim
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 08:02 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PUTRAJAYA – Despite evidence to the contrary, Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang has doubled down that he did not receive any documentary proof alleging impropriety involving the anti-graft body’s top guns.

Abu Zahar said no emails pertaining to claims of misconduct, supposedly sent by former Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel (PPPR) member Prof Edmund Terence Gomez, had reached him.

Both PPPR and LPPR are independent oversight bodies under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The Vibes had, on Sunday, published the email trails between Gomez, the LPPR secretariat and PPPR chairman Tan Sri Borhan Dolah that took place last November.

In a tell-all press conference today, Abu Zahar challenged Gomez to provide evidence he had indeed sent those emails detailing the impropriety.

“Please, come over and show me whatever it is. I have explained, and I then got an officer to confirm. We have not been shown (those emails).

Only independent probe can clear Azam, says anti-graft watchdog
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 07:52 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An anti-corruption watchdog has rejected the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board’s (ACAB) move to clear top graft-buster Azam Baki of any wrongdoing over his ownership of corporate shares.

Earlier today, ACAB chairman Abu Zahar Ujang said it was satisfied with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner’s explanation that his share account was used by his brother to purchase shares.

Abu Zahar said ACAB found no conflict of interest and that Azam did not have any pecuniary interest in the purchase of the shares, which was made in the open market in 2015 and transferred to his brother’s account the same year.

However, Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) said the ACAB’s inquiry did not amount to an independent probe to ascertain “the truth and details”.

“Only an independent probe will suffice to clear his (Azam) name and restore the integrity of MACC,” C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel told FMT.

LAS VEGAS – Electronics giant Sony unveiled yesterday a new prototype of its Vision-S electric vehicle and announced the founding of a company to explore jumping into the rapidly growing market.

The Japanese firm, better known for its TVs and video game consoles, will create the Sony Mobility subsidiary in spring 2022 as it weighs entering the field.

Sony chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida unveiled at the CES tech show in Las Vegas the Vision-S 02, a new version of the firm’s first prototype that has begun road testing.

Through this new branch, the electronics giant “intends to explore entry into the EV market,” it said in a statement.

The Vision-S is packed with internal and external sensors and is used by Sony to test its autonomous driving technologies.

The company is also working on entertainment systems.

MACC advisory board clears Azam on share purchase
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 05:00 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Tan-Sri-Borhan-Dolah-Abu-Zahar-FMT-new-050121.jpg]

PUTRAJAYA: The Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) has cleared Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki of any wrongdoing over his purchase of corporate shares.

At a press conference this afternoon, board chairman Abu Zahar Ujang said they had sought an explanation from Azam on the matter.

“Azam had explained that his share account was used by his brother, Nasir, to purchase shares that he (Azam) did not have any pecuniary interest in.

“The purchase of shares was made in the open market in 2015 and there was no conflict of interests,” he said.

The shares were then transferred to Nasir’s account that same year, said Abu Zahar.

Azam breaks silence, says claims he controls many companies are false
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 04:55 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki has finally spoken on his alleged ownership of shares, saying claims that he controls many companies are “lies”.

At a press conference today, Azam claimed that there were efforts by certain parties to undermine the MACC’s credibility.

“I did no wrong. Claims that there is a conflict of interest on my part are baseless,” he said.

“My share accounts are used by my brother. I have no interests in the shares bought. The shares bought by my brother and the companies have nothing to do with (any) MACC probes.”

Azam said he will be taking legal action against the parties who first raised the claims against him, for trying to tarnish his reputation, though he did not disclose who specifically.
