A Nasty Recession Is Coming – Here Are Signs That Economic Problems Are Getting Worse |

In an effort to lower inflation, the Federal Reserve has increased interest rates a whopping 10 times since March 2022. Over the period, inflation hit 9.1% in June 2022 – its highest point since 1982. In the latest inflation report, the inflation appears to have slowed down – recording 5.3% in May 2023, compared to 5.5% in April. This will reduce pressure for more interest rate hikes.
However, excluding volatile food and energy prices, the picture isn’t as optimistic. While food prices rose just 0.2%, it was mostly due to a 3.6% slice in energy prices. A 0.6% increase in shelter prices was a major contributor to the CPI reading. Used vehicle prices increased 4.4% and transportation services were up 0.8%. Crucially, the inflation continues to outpace wage gains for the 26th straight month.
While the Joe Biden administration wants the world to believe that the U.S. will not plunge into recession, a lot of experts have been saying that economic conditions are likely to start deteriorating later in the year. In short, only politicians believe a recession will not happen. Economic experts are ringing the alarm bells over an imminent recession, predicted to start in the second half of 2023.

TOKYO: Toyota faces an unprecedented challenge at its annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday, with some pension funds voting against Chairman Akio Toyoda on governance issues, while seeking more disclosures on the Japanese automaker’s climate lobbying.
The world’s top car maker has become a target in recent years for activists and green investors, who say it has been slow to roll out battery electric vehicles (EVs). Now, some investors have taken aim at the independence of its board.
The two largest US public pension funds – California’s CalPERS and CalSTRS – as well as New York City’s pension system and other asset managers have said they are voting against Toyoda.
Two prominent US proxy advisers have flagged concern about Toyota’s board independence.

JOHOR BARU – A total of 11,512 units of serviced apartments costing upwards of RM500,000 around Johor Baru and Iskandar Puteri are unsold, said Johor’s Housing and Local Government executive councillor.
Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said, however, that the developers with the unsold residences have started to receive positive feedback from foreign buyers, especially from Singapore as house prices in the republic are reported to be among the most expensive in Asia Pacific this year.
“Local property buyers do not need to worry about this because the housing policy of Johor has stipulated that only properties worth RM1-million-and-above are offered to foreigners, including buyers from Singapore,” he said after the Public Draw for Rumah Transit Bangsa Johor (RTBJ) at Taman Kempas Utama here yesterday.
He said as many as 50 developers will participate in the Johor Housing Expo which will be held at Angsana Johor Bahru Mall here for four days starting July 27, thereby helping solve the overhang of unsold built homes in the state.

From P Ramasamy
It is ridiculous to compare the “loss” of Malay land in Penang to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.
PAS’ manipulation of race and religion in anticipation of the coming state election is mind-boggling to say the least.
Apart from the various accusations and allegations against DAP or the unity government, this time around, the Islamic party has brought to fore the loss of Malay land to non-Malays in Penang over the years.

Push for DAP apology pointless, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: Demands for an apology from DAP over past accusations against Umno are aimed at shoring up Malay voter support in the coming elections, according to a political analyst.
Akademi Nusantara fellow Azmi Hassan said Umno leaders such as deputy president Mohamad Hasan and Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh were trying to demonstrate that Umno was superior to DAP.
The move was a way to convince supporters that, thanks to Umno’s superiority, it would be safe for them to vote for Pakatan Harapan candidates in the coming legislative elections in six states.
However, getting DAP to apologise “will not make much difference”, said Azmi. Instead, Umno should demonstrate that it had a stronger voice than DAP in the government.
He said it was unlikely for DAP to make a tit-for-tat demand for an apology from Umno for its own accusations.
“DAP members know very well why they need to support Umno candidates in the state elections in relation to the stability of the unity government, because the alternative is Perikatan Nasional,” Azmi told FMT.

SHAH ALAM – Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the people to do their part in defending the Selangor government based on the state’s performance and its importance to the national economy.
“Looking at Selangor’s performance, there is much more potential to offer, and Selangor plays an important role in defending the strength of the national economy. That is why there are many who want to get their hands on it… don’t allow them that opportunity,” Anwar, who is prime minister, said.
He said this at the prime minister’s special mandate for Selangor civil servants, which was attended by some 1,500 state civil servants here today.
“I am counting on all of you in Selangor as Selangor is our bastion. Selangor is the unity government’s stronghold. We should not support a government merely to retain it, but because we recognise its performance and its commitment to save the state and country,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reminded the people that the majority of underlying problems afflicting them today were not created by his administration.
“Given the time, we will resolve the issues…but we must point out that the issues were inherited,” he said.
From dividing the country through race and religion to economic issues coupled with rising living costs and corruption, Anwar pointed out that such major issues are long-standing ones.
Addressing some 5,000 students and staffers at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Anwar told the young undergraduates that it will soon be their time to fight the wrongs and relics of corruption left over by the previous administration.
He urged the youth to read more books so they can make informed choices and cannot be easily manipulated.
