KUALA LUMPUR – Top Umno and DAP leaders, as well as three menteri besar, will be in straight fights in the August 12 state elections.

THE Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ), in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Sains Malaysia has kickstarted a month-long hate speech monitoring project for the upcoming 2023 Malaysian state elections.
The monitoring will focus on the severity of hate speech surrounding sensitive issues like 3R (race, religion, royalty) sentiments and gender; and those targeted at specific groups such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people and refugees and migrants.
“Our aim with the “Say No to Hate Speech” monitoring which commenced on July 24 and will continue until Aug 20 is to monitor the following actors: politicians, political parties, media, government agencies and key opinion leaders,” CIJ executive director Wathshlah Naidu pointed out in a media statement.
“This aims to– to identify patterns and trends on how their hate narrative impacts or increases the potential harm against individuals and communities at risk. The monitoring will also include the identification of Coordinated Inauthentic Behaviours (CIB) such as bots and cybertroopers.”

HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has advised people to just ignore veteran politicians like former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, whom he regards as “troublemakers”.
Saifuddin claimed that Dr Mahathir and his new-found ally Hadi have been causing trouble for the past three decades when they should be building the nation and the duo have contributed towards destabilising the government over the past five years.
“In the last five years, both have created (political) instability in the country due to their selfish interests, not the country’s interest.
“So right now, during the candidate announcement, it’s broadcasted live in the country and overseas.
“Let people know that even though the state election is in Kedah, we want to assert that we no longer want to mention these two characters. This is the end of it, we move on,” Saifuddin said in his speech at the launching of Unity Kedah manifesto and candidate introduction in Bandar Laguna Merbok, Alor Setar, Kedah last night (July 27).

PETALING JAYA: Muda’s Seri Setia candidate Dobby Chew believes the party can thrive in a developed and progressive state like Selangor.
He said voters in Selangor would be more inclined to back Muda compared to other parties due to its unique open structure.
“In other parties, if you are younger, you get put into a youth wing, if you’re a woman you get put into a woman’s wing. With that, you have to contest among your own party members before you can even have the opportunity to lead or direct policies,” Chew told FMT.
However, he warned that the party must make its mark on the electorate quickly, for its own sake and that of the nation.
