KUALA LUMPUR: The need to foster unity has become even more critical now to counter voices that provoke the people’s emotions in the name of ethnicity or religion, says Sultan Nazrin Shah.
“After almost 66 years of gaining independence, it is crucial for citizens not to be swayed by hostile voices that can cause disputes, conflicts and divisions,” the Perak ruler said at the launch of ‘Buku Siri Titah II Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah’ at the World Trade Centre here.
“The nation requires leaders who embrace inclusivity, showing determination and wisdom in uniting the diverse elements into a strong and harmonious whole.”
Sultan Nazrin also described the late Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman as a leader with consistent views on the composition of the people in the country.

Low turnout in Selangor will favour PN, warn DAP leaders |

PETALING JAYA: DAP leaders are warning the party’s grassroots that a “green wave” may dislodge Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Selangor if voter turnout falls sharply below the 79% figure recorded in the state at the 15th general election (GE15) last November.
They say that with an addition of 2.97 million new voters in the state, the racial composition has changed, with 37 of the 56 seats up for grabs now showing a Malay-majority. Of the remaining seats, 13 are Chinese-majority constituencies while the remaining six are mixed seats.
Party insiders said leaders are worried rapid changes in the racial demographics would make it near impossible to reverse a defeat to Perikatan Nasional (PN) in future elections.
One source cited the urban Kota Kemuning seat which now has a Malay majority. Malay voters comprise 42%, while the Chinese make up 33%. Indians comprise 23% while others make up 2%.

PH-BN win in key states won’t quell instability talk, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: Victory for the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional alliance in the state elections in Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan alone may not be enough to dispel talk about instability surrounding the unity government, said an analyst.
Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid from Universiti Sains Malaysia said it was just as important to gauge the extent of Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) penetration into the three states before dismissing such talk.
“If PN gains support in the three states, this means that there’s a definite swing of votes away from Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional,” he told FMT.
He was commenting on a recent remark by Rajiv Rishyakaran, PH’s candidate for the Bukit Gasing state seat.
Rajiv said victory for PH-BN in the three states would show the unity government has the people’s support and end speculation about its collapse.

No guarantee PAS won’t marginalise non-Malays, says Santiago |

PETALING JAYA: Former Klang MP Charles Santiago has scoffed at PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that non-Malays have no reason to fear the party ahead of the Aug 12 state elections.
Santiago said if PAS had not created fear among non-Malays, it would not need to come up with such statements in the first place.
“How do you explain compounding a Chinese woman for wearing shorts in public?” he said in a statement today, referring to an incident in June where a business owner was fined by the Kota Bharu Municipal Council for violating by-laws on “indecent clothing”.
He also said PAS enforced its ideas on “haram” onto non-Muslims, citing the lack of cinemas in Kelantan and gender-segregated ones in Terengganu.
