Merdeka: remain united, beat unscrupulous politicians in their political game |

EVERY time a political leader glorifies Malaysia, they will talk about how “rich” the country is due to its diverse population.
They will describe Malaysia as the melting pot of culture, tradition, language, race and religion.
But look a little deeper, and we see the same politician somersaulting to pit us against each other using race and religion as a compelling narrative.
The play of race and religion on politics was the signature of the Umno administration, a cleverly manipulated rhetoric to keep us divided. And today, we are still seeing the consequences on the ground.
It’s our 66th Merdeka come August 31, and unlike the yesteryears, I hardly see any enthusiasm in Malaysians flying the Jalur Gemilang.
There is much friction and hostility amongst the diverse people who make up the society. And I see the potential of such animosity escalating, with the reason being multi-factorial – from the lacklustre economy and diminishing purchasing power to political grievances.

PUTRAJAYA – Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno does not intend to “revisit” cooperation relations with scheming parties or leaders.
The Umno president said cooperation should come from sincerity and not from people with manipulative and crafty moves, who are not welcome as they are full of tricks.
“Any leader and party that is very manipulative, I don’t think we (Umno) should revisit that relationship,” he said when asked by a reporter to comment on a report that PAS is still open to continuing the unification agenda with Umno.
He was met by the media after a dinner with ambassadors and representatives from 29 member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), here last night.

My father is planning to visit San Francisco soon by taking all inclusive vacations from sfo and I want to take care of all the arrangements for him. This includes deciding on a budget for the trip, selecting the best attractions to visit, finding good places to eat, and other necessary arrangements. Can you please suggest some good recommendations in this regard?

‘Green wave likely to hit brick wall in Umno fortress Johor’ |

KUALA LUMPUR – The so-called “green wave” may be playing on many pundits’ lips, and harped on by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership, but it may still not be able to crash past the grand dyke of Umno in its bastion of Johor.
According to a political analyst, the stature of the federal unity government as well as the Umno-led state administration is rock-solid among Johoreans ahead of the two by-elections in the state next month.
Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) Prof Ahmad Martadha Mohamed said that the green wave, meant to signify the rising electoral clout of PN and especially its component party PAS, may not reach Johor.
“This is because traditionally Johor is the birthplace of Umno and is the party’s stronghold,” he said in comments made to Getaran, The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister portal.

Boost economy with interest rate cut, says economist |

PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara has been urged to consider a cut in interest rates to spur economic activity after a low growth rate of 2.9% was registered for the first quarter of this year.
Barjoyai Bardai, an economist with Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, said a reduction in lending rates would increase consumer spending as it would boost their disposable income.
Bank Negara could lower the overnight policy rate to stimulate economic activity, he told FMT.
The OPR, or inter-bank lending rate, influences consumer rates. “It is a tool used by Bank Negara to invigorate the economy,” he told FMT. “When our economy faces challenges, the OPR is lowered to stimulate activity.”

Lim accuses PAS Simpang Jeram by-election candidate of spreading lies, falsehoods |

I WAS shocked by the nomination day statement by PAS candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-election Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya (main pic, white shirt) who pledged to break down a purported wall of racial animosity allegedly built by DAP.
Is the PAS state seat candidate another Tan Sri Hadi Awang who spread lies, falsehoods, fake news and hate speech without having substantiate them?
I have been with DAP for close to six decades and the creation of a wall of racial animosity among the races had never been an objective of the DAP!
In fact, the very opposite is the case. Right from the very first general election that DAP contested in 1969, the party has put up a multi-racial slate of state assembly and parliamentary candidates.
Dr Mazri may not know that in the 1969 general election, two DAP Malay state assemblymen were elected but he should know that in 1987, I was accused of being anti-Chinese because Ahmad Nor was the DAP candidate in the Gopeng by-election. Although he lost in the by-election, Ahmad Nor went on to become the first DAP Malay MP in 1990.
Dr Mazri cannot be unaware that at present, DAP has three Malay MPs or is he suggesting that the three DAP Malay MPs, Syahredzan Johan (Bangi), Syerleena Abdul Rashid, (Bukit Bendera) and Young Syefura Othman (Bentong) are not Malays or Muslims?

Trump, Biden policies shifted trade from China at a cost |

JACKSON HOLE: US trade has shifted away from China due to policies enacted by the Biden and Trump administrations, but US reliance on China-linked supply chains has not necessarily been reduced and consumers have faced higher costs, according to new research presented today at a Federal Reserve economic symposium.
Despite deglobalisation fears after the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, overall trade “has held steady at just under 60% of world (gross domestic product) rather than gone into freefall,” Laura Alfaro, an economist at Harvard Business School and Davin Chor, an associate professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, concluded in their paper, which was presented at the annual gathering of central bankers and economists in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Inappropriate for Sanusi to hold 8 portfolios, says C4 |

PETALING JAYA: It is inappropriate for Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor to hold multiple portfolios in the new state government, says the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4).
C4 chairman Edmund Terence Gomez said it was also deeply concerning that Sanusi chairs the state committee for finance as it could hinder the “check and balance” processes of the state.
“Different people should hold such crucial positions. This is to allow check and balance (within the state government), which is how a proper democratic system works,” he told FMT.
However, he acknowledged that this is not an isolated case, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also serving as finance minister in the federal government.
