PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has done well to ensure political stability in his first 100 days in power, says an analyst.
Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Pawi cited Anwar’s decision to call for a vote of confidence following his appointment and the establishment of the unity government secretariat as among the measures that strengthen his administration.
Awang Azman said Anwar also acted quickly to deliver concessions to Sabah and Sarawak as another key factor to ensure stability.
The Anwar-led government has increased the annual special grants to Sabah and Sarawak by at least 10-fold to RM260 million (Sabah) and RM300 million (Sarawak). The Borneon states have also been granted autonomy over infrastructure projects under RM50 million.
“This stability allows Anwar to focus on the country’s economy and strengthen ties with the neighbouring countries,” Awang Azman told FMT.

JOHOR BARU – The Islamic State (IS) has launched a media platform in Malaysia, claiming its presence in the country.
Called the Al Malaka Media Centre, the group linked to IS media outlets in Indonesia and the Philippines is understood to be in direct support of a “radical political party and an established radical organisation”.
The Nordic Counter-Terrorism Network’s (NCTN) Cyber Counter-Terrorism Division who identified Al Malaka Media Centre revealed that the group’s content is available on the dark web.
The dark web is a part of the internet that isn’t indexed by search engines and can only be accessed by specific applications such as the Tor browser.

PETALING JAYA: The government’s decision not to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) should not come as a surprise given that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his coalition, Pakatan Harapan, have their hands tied by the current political situation, analysts said.
Wong Chin Huat of Sunway University pointed out that the government was made up of various coalitions, while James Chin of University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said Anwar lacked the political capital to pursue policies that would not sit well among the Malay community.
On March 1, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry had no plans to recognise the UEC. In a parliamentary reply, she said this stand was based on the National Education Policy, and the Education Act 1996.
Recognising the UEC was among the key pledges in PH’s manifesto for the 15th general election (GE15).

KUALA KANGSAR – Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah has reminded all leaders not to disappoint the people by repeating the mistakes of past leaders, especially involving corruption.
He said the people feel suffocated and are disgusted with acts of corruption, which causes moral decline, oppression, cruelty, degradation, environmental disasters, unemployment, and poverty.
“The younger generation is the victim, facing a dark future because of corrupt leaders.
“Procurement practices raised many question marks while financial scandals have reportedly cast a dark shadow over the country’s reputation – and the shame comes with a high price to pay by citizens who have to deal with foreign counterparts.
“(Therefore,) read, assess, understand, and digest the message that was delivered through the ballot papers,” said the Perak ruler.
