I’ll back bill to limit PM’s post to Malays, says Wan Fayhsal

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional’s Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said he will support any amendments to the Federal Constitution to restrict the prime minister’s position to Malays.

The Machang MP said this would help “restore confidence” among Malays who have been perturbed by recent remarks by DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, who pointed out that the Federal Constitution does not bar a non-Malay from being the prime minister.

“As an MP, I will support it (amendment). I haven’t discussed this (with other PN MPs), but I suspect all of them will support it as it will give us real political stability,” Wan Fayhsal told FMT.

PAS backs call for Malay-only PM for sake of ‘stability’

PETALING JAYA: PAS is backing the proposal by Bersatu’s Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure that only Malays can become the prime minister.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the amendment should be carried out to ensure the country’s “stability and harmony”.

“Anxiety has increased among the public following Lim Kit Siang’s statement that a non-Malay could become a prime minister according to the Federal Constitution,” Tuan Ibrahim told FMT, referring to the DAP stalwart.

Sarawak leaders pan Wan Fayhsal’s ‘Malay only’ PM idea

PETALING JAYA: PAS is backing the proposal by Bersatu’s Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure that only Malays can become the prime minister.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the amendment should be carried out to ensure the country’s “stability and harmony”.

‘Malay only’ PM idea apartheid-like, says lawyers’ group

PETALING JAYA: Rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) has condemned an opposition MP’s call to limit the prime ministership to Malays, likening it to a form of apartheid as it would legalise racism in the Federal Constitution.

LFL director Zaid Malek said any attempt to limit the prime ministership to a single race would be struck down by the courts as it would “offend” the constitution.

He also said there were sufficient safeguards concerning the position of the Malays and Islam in the Federal Constitution.

Why fear a non-Malay PM?

Malay politicians keep harping on the same tune, that they want a leader who will defend the Malays and protect Islam. They claim that a non-Malay prime minister would threaten their rights and position.

On Dec 14, the MP for Machang, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should amend the Federal Constitution so that only Malays could be prime minister.

He claimed that this move would help restore Malay support for the Madani administration.

No! Why should Anwar do this? Why should he deny Malaysians who are non-Malay an equal chance of becoming PM?

Some of us entrust our lives to non-Malay professionals and we have no qualms about our surgeon, doctor, dentist or lawyer taking care of our medical needs or when we need them to defend us in court.

Why can’t the responsibility of taking care of us be extended to taking care of the nation?

There is nothing in the constitution to say that prime ministers must be Malay.

The ultra-nationalists demand that our PMs be Malay and some non-Malays, who have been conditioned by fear, will agree with them.
