Nine rulers to elect 17th king of Malaysia today

KUALA LUMPUR – The Conference of Rulers will convene a special meeting today to elect the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The special meeting, which is set to start at 10 am at Istana Negara, will see nine Malay Rulers casting their votes to elect not just a new Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but also a new Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The special meeting is called as Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s reign as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong will come to an end on Jan 30 next year.

Al-Sultan Abdullah ascended the federal throne on Jan 31, 2019, after being elected to hold the office of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Conference of Rulers’ special meeting on Jan 24 of the same year.

Malay rulers elect Sultan Ibrahim of Johor as next king

KUALA LUMPUR – The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, has been elected as the next king of Malaysia, effective January 31, 2024.

The result of the election by the Conference of Rulers was reportedly expected to be announced by Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal this evening, but has apparently been made public much earlier.

Bernama also reported that Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak has been elected as deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, effective the same date.

Sultan Nazrin thus retained the post he has held since December 2016.

Al-Sultan Abdullah conveys gratitude to Malay rulers for wisdom, unity

KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah expressed his gratitude for the support of the Malay Rulers today for enabling the country to overcome various events and challenges since 2019.

Al-Sultan Abdullah, who will end his tenure as the nation’s 16th Agong on January 30 next year, said despite the many challenges, the Conference of Rulers had always helped to find the best solutions for the well-being of the people.

“Whether political turmoil or the Covid-19 pandemic, throughout my reign, I have always upheld the oath I took with utmost sincerity, which is to govern Malaysia fairly and in accordance with the provisions of the federal constitution.

Al-Sultan Abdullah shouldered responsibility perfectly: Johor ruler

KUALA LUMPUR – The Conference of Rulers today expressed its appreciation to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for shouldering the responsibility of being the country’s protector since 2019 with trust, wisdom and perfection.

The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, who presided over the 262nd edition of the Conference of Rulers’ meeting, said during Al-Sultan Abdullah’s reign, the country faced several challenging issues.

These included the Covid-19 pandemic and political turmoil, the latter of which led to the appointment of four prime ministers.

“Nevertheless, all of these issues were successfully resolved through the wisdom of Paduka Adinda (Al-Sultan Abdullah) in negotiations with political leaders and with the rulers.
