GE15: DAP’s Howard Lee on playing the long game to win Malay support

IPOH – Sincere and genuine hard work to uplift the Malay community – be it in urban, semi-urban, semi-rural or rural areas – is a must for DAP to earn the support and trust of Malaysia’s largest ethnic group, a party central executive committee said.

Howard Lee, who is Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Ipoh Timor candidate, and who is well known among the Malay community in his former Pasir Pinji state seat for his service and thick Perak accent, told The Vibes and Getaran that an elected representative should serve without expecting rewards.

“It’s not a question of ‘Apa lagi Melayu mahu?’ (What more do Malays want?),” Lee said. He was referring to the infamous headline that Utusan Malaysia had published after the 13th general election in 2013 – “Apa lagi Cina mahu?” (What more do the Chinese want?) – when Chinese voters overwhelmingly threw their support to the opposition, depriving Barisan Nasional (BN) of its customary popular-vote majority.

Fate of coalitions hinges on how Malay votes go, say analysts

PETALING JAYA: Analysts see troubled waters for Malay-based parties Bersatu and Pejuang in the general election as the Malay votes have become unpredictable.

They say the Pejuang-led Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) may even end up losing all the seats it held, including the Langkawi and Jerlun constituencies, which Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his son, Mukhriz, are defending.

As for Barisan Nasional, they say it has to get at least 65% of the Malay votes to win a respectable number of seats, while Pakatan Harapan has to raise its percentage to at least 30% if it wants to be in pole position to form the next government.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the fate of the parties individually, and the coalitions as a whole, hangs on the Malay votes.

PH man banks on bread and butter issues to woo Alor Setar Malay voters

ALOR SETAR: Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Alor Setar, Simon Ooi, is banking on bread and butter issues, affordable housing and educational opportunities to win over Malay voters in the general election.

PH only managed to gain 25% to 30% of the Malay votes in GE14. Since it fell from power after the Sheraton Move in February 2020, it has continued to struggle to win over Malay voters in the Peninsula, manifested in a string of losses in state elections.

Ooi, of PKR, told FMT Malay voters, like everyone else, were struggling with the rising cost of living and negligible pay increases.

GE15: ‘momentum on Pakatan’s side, BN and PN will hoist white flag soon

KUALA LUMPUR – In the week where political opponents are showing signs of internal strife, Pakatan Harapan (PH) continues its push to reclaim Putrajaya with its ever-so-familiar mega ceramah programmes.

Its latest, held in a cul-de-sac nestled between blocks of apartments in congested Danau Kota here, witnessed some 5,000 supporters eager to get a glimpse of PKR’s top leaders.

The arrival of party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Rafizi Ramli at the Ayuh Malaysia ceramah last night were greeted with cheers and shouts of “reformasi” as they made their way through the crowd.

GE15 unlikely to produce a clear winner, PH to get most votes, says YouGov

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 16): The 15th general election (GE15) is unlikely to produce a clear winner, although Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) is most likely to with the largest share of the votes (35%), according to British international internet-based market research and data analytics firm.

In a statement on Wednesday (Nov 16), the pollster said that Perikatan Nasional (PN), a coalition of former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s party and PAS, are set to pick up 20% of the votes, with incumbent Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Barisan Nasional (BN) trailing at 17%.

YouGov Asia Pacific head of public affairs and polling Dr Campbell White said while PH is likely to perform well in urban parts of Malaysia, the substantially lower number of voters required to win a seat in rural electorates where BN and PN are likely to perform well means that the Parliament is likely to be very complex.

GE15: can Peja overpower Anwar’s might in Tambun?

TAMBUN – It will be a David v Goliath battle in Tambun as caretaker youth and sports minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu takes on Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) prime minister candidate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the parliamentary seat this Saturday.

The Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman is banking on Malay votes to make him a “giant slayer”, just as how PH’s own Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin expects to do the same in Bagan Datuk against Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In an exclusive interview with The Vibes in Tambun, Faizal said he is also relying on the fact that he is a true-blue local in the federal seat – which now has 160,855 voters, compared to 107,763 in the 2018 national polls. In that election, Faizal won the seat in a three-cornered fight with Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS candidates by a majority of 5,320 votes.

This time, there are more than 50,000 new voters, which includes 18- to 20-year-olds, and there is no precedent to how they will vote.

GE15: at Pakatan rally in Gombak, ‘traitors’ take centrestage

GOMBAK – Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders took full advantage of a rally here last night to drive home one clear message to their supporters – use the coming election to teach the “traitors”, as the defectors from the coalition were called, a lesson.

It was perhaps apt that the event would take place in the Gombak constituency, whose incumbent MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali was one of the key architects of the “Sheraton Move” that caused the collapse of the PH government in February 2020.

The mere mention of Azmin’s name throughout the programme drew strong jeers from the crowd, who made themselves clear that the former PKR deputy president is no longer welcome.
 
PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who has been tasked by PH to take on his former mentor in the parliamentary seat, meanwhile, was given a hero’s welcome when he took the stage last night.

Young voters demand ‘meaningful change’

PETALING JAYA: With polling day around the corner, young voters have voiced a demand for meaningful change in the governance of the country, with education, the standard of living, and employment topping their list of concerns.

Fahtiha Nasarudin, 21, said youths do not merely want one-off assistance from the government “only to be forgotten later”.

“We want systemic change that will serve us, the rakyat, in the long term,” she told FMT.

Nicholas Yap said he would favour a party that puts the interest of the public first when proposing policies.

GE15: Fahmi Fadzil helpful, better than Nurul Izzah, say Lembah Pantai locals

KUALA LUMPUR – Incumbent Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil can be optimistic about successfully defending his parliamentary seat in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15) as his constituents commend the contributions he has made during his period as their representative.

When asked by The Vibes, Lembah Pantai locals unanimously acknowledged Fahmi’s grassroots presence, and the positive improvements he has made for the region, which they say have been more memorable than his predecessor’s.

Muhammad Hamidi, a Pantai Dalam resident, opined that Fahmi left a more noticeable mark during his leadership, as compared to Pakatan Harapan (PH) vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar during her two terms prior.

“It is true that he (Fahmi) has been giving support to the locals here,” Hamidi told The Vibes.

Muhyiddin likely to win Pagoh, Syed Saddiq may struggle in Muar

KULAI: With just two days left for campaigning in the general election, none of the big three coalitions appears to be in the driver’s seat in Johor.

In Pagoh, where Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin is seeking a ninth term, there appears to be strong support for the former prime minister with his ceramahs well attended by Malay and Chinese voters.

In Muar, its former MP, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, may struggle to defend his seat with it being considered an open race between him, PN’s Abdullah Husin and Barisan Nasional’s Helmy Abd Latif.

Some of the voters in the area who spoke to FMT said they do not want MPs who are only active on social media.
