KUALA LUMPUR: Over 8,000 PKR members have submitted their candidacy for branch level posts in the party elections next month.

PKR election committee chief Zaliha Mustafa said the online nomination process using a phone app had gone smoothly since Friday despite a few technical difficulties.

PKR veep race: Shamsul Iskandar submits name at 11th hour

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin is the last candidate to throw in his hat for PKR’s crowded vice-president race.

The party’s information chief submitted his nomination at 11.46pm last night – 13 minutes before nominations closed at 11.59pm.

His candidacy was seconded by Selangor executive councillor Borhan Aman Shah and Pahang PKR deputy chairman Rizal Jamin.

Shamsul became the 18th and final candidate for the vice-president race.

Asked about the last-minute inclusion, Shamsul said the vice-president post comes with the heavy responsibility of supporting the president and deputy president in anchoring the party.

Nurul Izzah steers clear of PKR election

KUALA LUMPUR – Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar today announced that she will not be contesting in the upcoming PKR elections, choosing instead to direct her attention towards Ayuh Malaysia, a political initiative aimed at revitalising her party and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition.

She announced her decision in a Facebook post, saying that her struggle will be to win over undecided voters through the Ayuh Malaysia platform.

“Give me space to fully drive the Ayuh Malaysia movement,” said Nurul Izzah, who is also called Puteri Reformasi by her supporters.

Keep PKR elections clean, says Rafizi

PETALING JAYA: Rafizi Ramli has called for the upcoming PKR elections to be “clean”, with each member allowed to choose a leader based on a personal assessment of their performance.

In a statement, the former Pandan MP said the election should not be tainted by emotions, personal attacks, or campaigns based on “revelations”.

“I am aware of candidates who say they are the party president’s choice and give the impression that if you do not vote for them, you’re not loyal to the president,” he said.

Battle for Setiawangsa PKR chief: Afdlin up for tough fight

KUALA LUMPUR – Celebrity actor and director Datuk Afdlin Shauki said he will be facing a tough fight against incumbent PKR Setiawangsa branch chairman Nik Nazmi Ahmad when the two face off in the upcoming party polls.

Afdlin, who joined the party last year, announced his bid to contest the Setiawangsa branch chief post on Monday.

The multiple award-winning entertainer, who cut his teeth writing and performing comedy skits before hitting the silver screen, said service is the driving force behind his decision to contest the post and not any animosity towards Nik Nazmi.

“I have great respect for Nik Nazmi and what he has done for the party. I am entering the party elections to give party members an option of a candidate who does not have political baggage behind me,” Afdlin told The Vibes.

“I am less about the politics and more about the service. I am ready to be of service to rejuvenate the party in Setiawangsa and strengthen PKR’s footing in the area. (It is) definitely a tough fight as Nik is the incumbent MP.”

Anwar’s re-election as PKR head will hold back party reforms, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: An analyst foresees PKR prolonging its struggle for party reforms now that Anwar Ibrahim has retained its presidency for the 2022-2024 term.

Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs told FMT he believed PKR would struggle to produce new leaders with fresh ideas because old leaders were clinging to power.

Will there be a ‘purge’ of Azmin’s camp? What to watch out for at the PKR polls

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — PKR is set to hold its elections for the 2022-2025 term between May 13 and 18.

The party’s internal polls have always been fractious in the past. Now, there is speculation that those loyal to president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will seek to “purge” remnants of leaders seen as close to former deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

Alongside several other key leaders, Azmin defected to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia in 2020, plunging the party into a leadership crisis that pundits saw as a consequence of a power tussle between Azmin and Anwar. 

Underpinning the friction, according to political observers, was Anwar’s growing uneasiness with Azmin’s rising influence in the federal government after he was made the economic affairs minister, which allowed him to amplify his popularity within the party at the time.

Nurul Izzah: lack of confidence or plotting a new strategy?

PETALING JAYA: Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar’s decision to sit out the coming PKR elections has been perceived as a lack of confidence by a political analyst.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Nurul Izzah probably thought she did not have a good chance of winning if she were to contest in the elections, but he believed she should at least be going for one of the vice-president’s posts.

Azmi said her prospects of climbing up the PKR leadership ladder would be affected, while party members would find it difficult to look up to her as one of the main leaders when Anwar Ibrahim eventually stepped down as president.

“This is the right time for her to at least be in one of the four vice-president’s seats since her father is still the president. Her father’s influence is good for her,” he told FMT.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — With the PKR party polls rolling in hot, the race for the leadership of Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) — the party's Youth wing — is between two former student activists, Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Fahmi Zainol.

According to Professor Azmi Hassan, a senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, the post of AMK chief is synonymous with the Reformasi movement which needs fierce leaders to push for change.

A description which fits both Adam and Fahmi.

Hell and back with PKR: Nik Nazmi confident of support in party polls

KUALA LUMPUR – Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is confident of retaining the support of his divisional members in the upcoming PKR election in May, as he faces a straight battle with celebrity actor and director Datuk Afdlin Shauki.

Nik Nazmi said he, however, welcomes Afdlin’s decision to contest as Setiawangsa PKR division chief as it brings “a lot of colour” to the party polls and celebrates democracy within the party fold.

The first-term MP said he has seen much change in the division from the time he moved from being Seri Setia assemblyman in Selangor to the parliamentary constituency in Kuala Lumpur four years ago.
