Gobind Singh tallies most votes at DAP committee polls

SHAH ALAM – Gobind Singh Deo garnered the highest number of votes during the DAP central executive committee elections (CEC) here this evening.

Despite gaining 1,782 votes out of 2,179 ballots, the Puchong MP is not guaranteed the secretary-general post as it is likely to go to Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who ranked third with 1,625 votes.

This is due to an understanding between party leaders that the reigns of the party will be helmed by the former transport minister.

While Gobind topped the list, outgoing secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had placed eighth among the top 30 CEC members with 1,311 votes.

Lim was behind Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, among others.

DAP names Anthony Loke as new secretary-general

SHAH ALAM – Anthony Loke is the new secretary-general of DAP. The matter was decided by the party’s 17th national congress held at the IDCC Convention Centre here today.

Former secretary-general Lim Guan Eng will hold the post of national chairman while Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo will maintain his position as the deputy national chairman. – The Vibes, March 20, 2022

Surprised, but no regrets, says Pua after losing CEC seat

PETALING JAYA: Damansara MP Tony Pua is surprised he failed to make the cut for a seat in DAP’s central executive committee (CEC), saying he did not expect to miss out on a place in the top leadership as a whole.

In a statement, Pua said he was disappointed by the DAP delegates’ decision but maintained that he had no regrets over his past 14 years as a CEC member.

Having been a part of the CEC since 2008, he said, he had worked towards attracting young, talented Malaysians to join the party and to improve the quality of DAP’s elected representatives.

“Perhaps my zeal in averaging up the quality of our elected representatives had the unintended consequence of offending some within the party, especially in Selangor where I was first defeated in the party’s state committee election in 2018.

“I have, however, no regrets at all in giving the opportunity to the young and talented, who will ultimately become the bedrock of the party’s future.

DAP leaders, grassroots differ on need for more Malay leaders

PETALING JAYA: There is a huge disconnect between the DAP leadership and the grassroots on the need for more Malay leaders to be at the top level of the party hierarchy, according to an analyst.

Akademi Nusantara senior fellow (strategic research) Azmi Hassan said the results of the party’s central executive election on Sunday, where only one Malay candidate out of 10 was elected, could be construed as the grassroots not heeding the push in this direction by the leaders.

Pua still a ‘very important asset’ to DAP, says Loke

PETALING JAYA: Tony Pua remains a “very important asset” to DAP despite losing his place in its central executive committee (CEC), says newly elected party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.

In a Facebook post, Loke said he understood Pua’s disappointment on missing out on the CEC elections last Sunday “as it was like his contributions to the party went unappreciated”.

Kit Siang declines DAP ‘mentor’ post

PETALING JAYA: DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang has turned down being the “mentor” for the party he founded more than 50 years ago, reiterating that he was retiring from the party leadership.

In a speech during a dinner with DAP leaders and MPs last night, Lim said he will continue giving the party’s new leadership his full support, adding that this had been conveyed to secretary-general Loke Siew Fook a few days earlier.

He also noted that he could not retire from politics as a whole as long as he lived, “for politics impinges on every aspect of one’s life”.

Howard Lee, Vivian Wong appointed to DAP’s top body

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has co-opted Pasir Pinji assemblyman Howard Lee and Sandakan MP Vivian Wong into the central executive committee (CEC), the party’s top decision-making body.

Other new co-opted CEC members include Bilut assemblyman Lee Chin Chen, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and former Paloh assemblyman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali.

“The decision was reached during a CEC meeting on Tuesday,” DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said at a press conference today.

Meanwhile, the party’s candidate selection committee was filled by top CEC members.

They include Loke, party chairman Lim Guan Eng, deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo and vice-chairmen M Kula Segaran and Nga Kor Ming.
