DAP could’ve won 8 seats in Melaka with higher voter turnout: Guan Eng

SANDAKAN – Albeit losing four out of the eight seats contested in Melaka, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party could have won them all if there was at least a 10% higher voter turnout in the state during polling day yesterday.

Lim said Pakatan Harapan (PH) got 35% – and Barisan Nasional (BN), 38% – of the popular vote, but this was not reflected in the election results as BN won 75% of the seats, leaving PH with less than 20%.

“This showed the impact of the low voter turnout this time, which has dropped by 20% (compared to the 2018 general election). If the voter turnout was 15%-20% higher, PH would have won more seats. If it was just 10% higher, DAP would have won all eight seats,” he said at a press conference here today.

Lim said besides the low voter turnout, the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that provide for several restrictions during the campaigning period was another reason for the party’s defeat.
